Good morning to everyone. Grace and peace be with you.
Today I am going to speak on a topic that I think we all can relate to. Stress. (or am I the only one?)
Everyone here handles stress in a different manner. Some ways are healthy, so not so much. The Word says to cast our burdens on to Him and take up his…ours are heavy, his are light. Simple right? Don’t worry, be happy was the theme in the eighties. Unfortunately, the enemy has provided us with a playground in which … I would say probably a good 85 percent of us (no science involved, just my opinion) tend to take on the world’s issues because we have been told over and over again that we have to be strong. We have to multitask. We have to do things on our own to prove we are worthy. But worthy of what? Acceptance of our neighbors. Acceptance of our bosses. Acceptance of those who see us and get their initial vibe of who we are. Respectable and established.
The enemy has made it clear that in order to succeed you must be able to do all things on your own. If you ask or need help, then you are weak and unworthy. He pits these little thoughts in our heads and makes us believe that we are failures. My friend…this is a lie.
There is a story about what happens when you put three different items into water. An egg. A potato. Coffee beans. When you boil these things, three different effects occur. The egg goes from fragile to hard. The potato goes from hard to soft. The beans go from individuals to a blended brew. Now, one could make a story for each of them, but I surmise this thought … when we are in the world, we are the exact same as this picture. Our personalities create our alter ego in stressful situations. Not always giving the outcome that we had thought.
The potato for instance. Seems firm enough and can handle anything, however, when the heat builds up … he turns to mush. The potato could be the school bully. Hard on the outside, but soft on the inside. Many of us can relate to that.
Or…maybe the potato puts on a hard front for protection but truly has a soft heart. When the heat turns up, the potato becomes the one everyone turns to because he has a plan and can execute it without wigging out.
What about the egg? Hard but fragile shell on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside. Add the heat and the inside firms up hard and shell become difficult to remove. In a daily routine, the egg may hold their feelings on their sleeve and in mild situations seem to crack under pressure, but in reality … when the heat is on, they firm up and become laser focused.
Now the coffee bean, it takes more than one to make a good cup of coffee. So they have to be team players from the beginning. They can try and stand on their own, but they will not accomplish anything as a single bean. And as hard as it is for them to accept that, they do. They must be a team player before the heat and then after the heat. The coffee bean family is an example of being able to handle the calm and the storm. The question is this, which team are you on?
Whichever character you relate to best, you must have the Holy Spirit with you in order to make the best of the situation you are in. When you do not have Him, the world will take over and you will struggle. Rash reactions almost always create rash consequences. But prayerful reactions, reactions based on His calming knowledge, most definitely create peaceful reactions. For both you and the situation. -
Stress is, I believe, the biggest obstacles Christians face each day. The stress of setting the right example yes but also living up to the world’s view of what a Christian is ‘supposed’ to be. Put aside the world view and seek His view. It is much easier to comply with.
Be blessed today my friends.
***Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. – Matthew 11:29-30
