The Seal And Earnest Of The Spirit

Song of Songs 8:6
6 Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.

How apropos is Songs 8:6 describing the seal of the Holy Spirit who loved us through the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, is a jealous God zealous for the new creature’s increase in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, and warns us our salvation is as by fire; the Christian works out with fear and trembling their salvation what God worked in both to will and do of His good pleasure.

A search of the bible for the word ‘seal’ and ‘sealed’ finds the following verses: 2 Ti 2:19, Jn 6:27, 2 Co 1:22, Ep 1:13, and Ep 4:30. Briefly, they read of foundation, consisting of the apostles, prophets, and Chief cornerstone - the Christian departing from iniquity. A Son sealed by the Father, God’s seal and earnest of the Spirit, the believer sealed with the Holy Spirit, and the Christian grieving not God’s Holy Spirit.

The seal referred to within the verse references above is highly misconstrued and I have read and heard it described as a ‘guarantee’ of some sort; as if an assurance the believer is ‘approved’ and will be ‘saved’ whether worthy of God or not. This the best way to describe the misunderstanding and is patently false.

Instead, the seal mentioned is an earnest of inheritance: a promise of comfort Jesus spake of with the expectation the believer will, through the Spirit, mortify the deeds of the flesh. For 2 Ti 2:19 to be true, we must be in Christ and that sets us upon the right foundation.

Ep 1:13 reads that we are sealed with that holy Spirit of promise and the same Spirit Jesus spake of: another comforter (Jn 14:16), the Spirit of truth (Jn 14:17), the Holy Ghost who will teach us all things and bring all things to our remembrance (Jn 14:26), the Spirit of truth (Jn 15:26), who guides us into all truth and shew us things to come (Jn 16:13).

The Holy Ghost, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth is God and He lusteth to envy that the new creature be transformed by the renewing of mind to prove what is that good, acceptable, and perfect will of God. This is the same Spirit Jesus was baptized and sealed by the Father in Jn 6:27; Jesus demonstrating, by example, the power of God and is now available to us who believe upon Jesus.

The expectation is the Christian will use the promised Comforter who is the earnest of our inheritance until the day of redemption as an help meet to do all that is written above and, chiefly, mortify sin, walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God (Co 1:10) for the purpose of spiritual growth.

Jesus spake of the corn of wheat that must die else it abides alone. But if it dies, it bringeth forth much fruit. This analogy equates the Christian as the corn of wheat and the Holy Spirit aiding the transformation from seed to mature plant producing fruit (Jn 15:1-6).

The responsibility lay with the Christian and not with Jesus who gave the Comforter to aid our redemption and salvation. Let’s keep regular devotion, being diligent redeeming the time for the days are evil, and develop rightly-divided dogma through bible reading, studying, meditation, and memorization.

The Lord bless ye saints of God!
