Mark 6:31, “And he said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.””

This week, my wife Carole is away visiting family in Tennessee, and I’ve had the house to myself. While I miss her dearly, this time of quiet has reminded me of the value of solitude. In Mark 6:31, Jesus invites His disciples to ‘Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest awhile.’ He knew the importance of stepping away from the demands of life to find renewal and connection with God.

In our busy world, it can feel unnatural feel the need to be alone. We often fill the silence with noise—television, music, or endless to-do lists. But in our quiet times, we have the unique opportunity to hear God’s still, small voice. Psalm 62:1 says, ‘Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from Him.’ Rest isn’t just a break from activity, it’s a chance to recharge spiritually.

Being alone with God isn’t about emptiness or loneliness; it’s about His presence. It’s in these moments that we can pour out our hearts to Him, seek His guidance, and experience His peace. For me, this week has been a time to reflect on the blessings in my life—like Carole—and to thank God for His ever-present companionship. Because even when the house feels empty, He is there!

Whether we’re navigating the noise of a busy life or finding moments of quiet, God invites us to draw near, to lay our burdens before Him, and to rest in His love.

I want to leave you with this challenge today: How can you create time in your life this week to step away from distractions and simply be in God’s presence? Maybe it’s setting aside a quiet moment each day for prayer, reading Scripture, or simply sitting still and reflecting on His goodness. Embrace the gift of solitude—not as loneliness, but as time to grow closer to the One who is always with us.

Have a great day, and as always, let others see Jesus in you!
