Truth Fallen in the Streets.
It’s tempting here to believe that “Sodom and Egypt” refer to a corrupted Jerusalem. But note the verse carefully: It talks about a “great city” that bears these names “spiritually.”
In ancient Egypt, the Creator God was not recognized. The pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD” (Exodus 5:2). This is the epitome of atheism, the denial of the existence of the true God. This same spirit of rebellion—prompted by Satan—can be seen as the chief character of the nation of France during its revolution.
And Sodom? The Bible identifies the city by its “sexual immorality” (Jude 7), the licentiousness of its citizens (Genesis 19:4–9). There was, likewise, a similar spirit in the French Revolution. By law, fornication was permitted, even encouraged, resulting in the insidious dissolution of the family unit. The union of a man and woman, instituted by God at Creation, was made a mockery of by the appalling establishment of the “republican marriage,” a debasing form of double execution of a man and a woman.
The “dead bodies” that “lie in the street,” some commentators believe, refer to the mass burnings of the Bible in the streets of France. Anyone who owned a Bible was killed. The Reign of Terror saw the unjustified arrest, imprisonment, and execution of hundreds of thousands. Even the seven-day week was altered to ten days, with the day of rest on the tenth day.
And on November 10, 1793, a “Festival of Reason” was held in the famous Notre Dame Cathedral. One historian noted the event was “celebrated” with prostitution and immorality. For the pinnacle act, a local opera singer dressed up as the Goddess of Reason, also known ironically as Liberty, was paraded to the altar and worshiped upon it.
It’s as though someone were gunning down the Ten Commandments one at a time. Isaiah 59:14 was brought to life: “Truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.”
Lord Jesus, let us never abandon You and the faith You gave us. May we keep Your words in our hearts and never allow them to be trampled underfoot!
