Observations about the Crucifixion
1) There were 5 occasions when Jesus was offered vinegar (i.e. sour wine) mixed with myrrh/gall [1. On the way to Golgotha (Mark 15:23 = were offering, Imperfect Tense), He did not drink. 2. When they arrived there (Matt. 27:33), He tasted it, but would not drink. 3. Later, by the soldiers after He was on the cross (Luke 23:36), probably at their own meal. 4. Later still, a proposal made by some and checked by others, but afterward carried out (Matt. 27:48). 5. The last about the ninth hour, in response to the Lord’s call (John 19:29).] Wine drugged with myrrh, a drink given by a merciful custom before execution to deaden the sense of pain. Jesus declines the drink, desiring to suffer with clear mind.
2) Simon, the Cyrene, who carries Jesus’ cross had his two sons with him, Alexander and Rufus Mark 15:21. Alexander is mentioned in Acts 19:33 and in Romans 16:13 says Salute Rufus. Same people??
3) Jesus is led to Calvary with two malefactors who are crucified with Christ Luke 23:32-33 & John 19:18. After the dividing of Jesus’ garments, THEN two thieves were crucified on either side of Jesus. Matt. 27:38. The two thieves reviled Jesus but only one malefactor did Matt. 27:39-44 & Luke 23:35-43. Then when they break the legs of those crucified, they break two sets of legs and then they come to Jesus John 19:31-37. So five men were crucified that day.
4) Darkness covered the land from the 6th hour (noon) to the 9th hour (3pm). Matt. 27:45-49, Mark 15:33, & Luke 23:44. During this time the Father poured out all His wrath upon Jesus as payment for our sins and at the 9th hour Jesus cries “My God, My God why has thou forsaken me?” He made Him to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. 2Cor. 5:21.
5) At the 9th hour, Jesus says “I thirst”. John 19:28. There is a deep significance here. He saw the casting of the lots, and knew that all that the Scripture had foretold of others was finished. There yet remained a prediction for Him to realize, that of Ps. 69:21.
6) There at the crucifixion was another member of Jesus’ family. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. John 19:25.
7) When Jesus died, the vail in the temple was rent from top to bottom, obviously by God the Father. Matt. 27:51.
8) Finally, Nicodemus reappears on the scene after Jesus dies to assist Joseph of Arimathaea with the burial. John 19:39-42. Apparently, He was born again !!!
