The Final Events, Part 2
The elders’ thanksgiving continues, summarizing in greater detail the reasons for their praise. But notice the verb tense used here: “Your wrath has come” (emphasis added). At this point in the seventh trumpet, God’s judgment “of the dead,” His “[rewarding of] … the saints,” and His eradication of the sin that has been “[destroying] the earth” are all about to occur.
These are the events that encompass the final judgment. Remember the three woes introduced in Revelation 8:13. The seventh trumpet represents the third and last woe upon the people of Earth, God’s final divine judgment. The rest of the book of Revelation describes in detail each of the final events that the elders list here.
Did you catch what this means? This scene in heaven occurs in the future; it hasn’t happened yet. Remember, the sixth trumpet has already passed; we are living in the time of the seventh trumpet. We are living at the end of time.
Let’s step back and look at the 24 elders. We have already learned that the elders are seen multiple times in the book of Revelation, always worshiping God—but there’s more. The elders are also seen around the last sequence of sevens. They are seen between the sixth and seventh seal and now during the seventh trumpet. When we get to Revelation 16, we’ll see another series of seven, seven vials, that matches this same pattern.
This placement is not by accident. In Scripture, the number seven symbolizes completion. The elders’ worship of God is a laudation of the completion of the plan of salvation. At this time, the final prophecies will be fulfilled; the history of the Earth will reach its culmination. These sevenfold sequences, repeatedly ending with the heavenly praise of God’s ultimate victory, emphasize the veracity of the victory. God is telling us again and again that, no matter where you are, no matter how you look at it, when the end comes, He will triumph over evil.
Lord of lords, I put my trust in Your righteous judgments that salvation is coming for all who believe in You.
