OUR BELIEFS

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
PSALM 14:1, RSV

G.K. Chesterton once said that if he were a landlord what he would most want to know about his tenants was not their employment, nor their income, but their beliefs, if there was any way he could truly find out. For it would be their beliefs that would determine their honesty, their relationships, and their stewardship of the property. An adequate income is no proof against dishonesty. A reputable job is no guarantee against profligacy. Our beliefs are not off-the-cuff answers we give to an opinion survey; our beliefs are the deepest things about us.
