What does being forgiven mean?

Isaiah 1:18
“Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.”
Colossians 1:21-22
You were his [God’s] enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.
Being forgiven by God means that he looks at us as though we had never sinned. When we receive his forgiveness by faith through trusting in Christ, we are blameless in his sight. When God forgives, he doesn’t merely hide our sins; he completely washes them away.

Acts 8:22-23
“Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord. Perhaps he will forgive your evil thoughts, for I can see that you are full of bitter jealousy and are held captive by sin.”
Sin traps us in bitterness, evil addictions, and a condemning guilt that tells us we can never change. Forgiveness and repentance provide the opportunity for a fresh start—an affirmation that our sins do not need to define and control us.

Matthew 5:44
“But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!”
Being forgiven by God paves the way for harmonious relationships, even with our enemies.

Romans 4:7
Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight.
Colossians 2:13
You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins.
Forgiveness brings great joy because we have been freed from the heavy weight of guilt and are no longer slaves to our sinful nature.

Acts 2:38
Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Being forgiven of our sins by God allows us to receive the gift of God’s Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us battle temptation and guides us through life.

Romans 10:9-10
If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.
God’s forgiveness is the only way we can have the assurance of eternal life.
