An Extraordinary Birth.
It is now revealed that the woman introduced in verse 1 is pregnant. Her “pain” is predominantly featured. This takes us back to Adam and Eve’s Fall, in which God disclosed the consequences of their sin. To Eve, God said, “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; in pain you shall bring forth children” (Genesis 3:16).
This is fascinating when compared to what God told the serpent just one verse before: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel” (v. 15). This is the first prophecy given in Scripture: The “Seed” is Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:16); the serpent is the devil (Revelation 12:9). How do you think the serpent reacted upon hearing that he would be receiving from this “Seed” a “head” blow?
He certainly didn’t take it lying down. Since Eden, Satan has been plotting against and waiting for the promised “Seed.” He knew that the “Seed” was foretold to come from God’s chosen people, the Jewish nation, the woman of the Old Testament (Genesis 49:10; Isaiah 11:1). And he did his utmost to impede the birth of that “Seed,” relentlessly heaping attack after attack upon those faithful to God.
Note the woman’s labor pains in today’s verse. The original Greek word for “cried out,” krazo, can mean “to cry or pray for vengeance,” as one Bible dictionary says. We saw that word in Revelation 6:10 when the martyrs cried out to God for vindication. The Greek word for “in pain,” basanizo, is also rendered as “to torment.” The majority of its references in the Bible deals with the punishment, trial, and persecution of believers. Satan is the reason for all the woman’s cries of pain. But for all his effort, the devil could not stop the Word of God from coming true.
Lord Jesus, as Revelation peels back the curtain on the great controversy between Christ and Satan, help us to put on Your armor to withstand Satan’s attacks. Amen!
