April 23rd

Enter the Dragon.

After the woman, the second “sign” we see is a “dragon.” What does this “dragon” symbolize? Just a few verses later, we see this “dragon” is identified as Satan (Revelation 12:9).

In Revelation 13, a beast is depicted that has “seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns ten crowns” (v. 1). In Revelation 17, a beast is similarly seen with “scarlet, … having seven heads and ten horns” (v. 3). And in Daniel 7, a beast is described very much like a dragon, “dreadful and terrible, exceedingly strong,” with “huge iron teeth” and, also, “ten horns” (v. 7). Each beast has a similar appearance; they all look like the dragon—like Satan.

Remember that this ten-horned beast in Daniel symbolizes Rome (Daniel 7:23). Thus, we can know that each time this beast is mentioned, it is referring to Rome. Fittingly, in Revelation 13, we learn that it was the dragon who “gave [the beast] his power, his throne, and great authority” (v. 2) and that through this, “all the world …. [will worship] the dragon” (vv. 3, 4).

Just as the woman of Revelation 12 resembles Christ, the beast resembles Satan. Just as the church is a representative of Christ pointing others to worship Him, so this beast is a representative of Satan that drives people to worship him.

“Red” is, like the red horse of the second seal (6:4), a symbol of persecution. It can also represent sin and bloodshed. The color is apt considering Satan is both the main persecutor of Christ and His church, as we will soon see in greater detail, and the originator of sin.

The word “diadem” comes from the Greek diadema, a royal crown. Contrast this with the woman’s “crown” of victory. This is what the dragon has wanted since he began his rebellion against God; he wants to be king (Isaiah 14:13, 14)—and he’s using earthly kingdoms in his attempted takeover.

Thank You, God, for warning us of the enemy’s machinations against us and ultimately against You. Protect us with Your righteous right hand.

For Further Study: Isaiah 9:15; Daniel 7:20; Revelation 20:2
