Surprise Attack.

On December 7, 1941, the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor was attacked without warning, killing 2,403 unsuspecting Americans. This “date which will live in infamy,” as President Franklin D. Roosevelt called it, indeed lives on as one of the great tragedies of the Second World War.

In today’s verse, we are given a glimpse of supernatural warfare from the theater of heaven. We are told that there is a whole universe of spectators out there, all those who “dwell in [the heavens].” When they learned of the devil’s loss at the cross, their reaction was one of rejoicing. What a contrast is depicted here between our sin-ridden earth and the rest of the unfallen worlds!

Is it not that much more tragic to realize that the entirety of God’s creation is of a single mind toward Satan and his demons—except us, “the inhabitants of the earth and the sea”? Of all the other worlds that Christ has made (Hebrews 1:2), we are the only ones to not yet see through the devil’s wiles. Today’s verse is clear: The devil is our adversary; he is the one doing the harm to you.

The timestamp revealed in this verse is fascinating. This warning was given after the cross. That was two thousand years ago. If the devil’s time was “short” then, if the end of the world was near then—how much time does he have left now? How much time do we have left?

This verse says that the devil is on the warpath now and that his target is us. Knowing this, are we fortifying ourselves daily with “the whole armor of God, that [we] may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11)? Or have we been lulled into complacent self-sufficiency and so-called security? Will we also be caught unawares by his attacks, like the poor souls at Pearl Harbor?

My Refuge and Fortress, thank You that we may trust Your sure prophecies with our lives, that we may be able to withstand the woes to come.

For Further Study: Isaiah 59:17–19; Ephesians 6:14–18; 1 Peter 5:8
KEY BIBLE TEXTS
Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. Revelation 12:12
