Spirit’s Influence in the Affairs of Men

Genesis 11:3 (BSB)
And they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” So they used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar.

Where did these thoughts and ideas come from? What inspired the invention of bricks and tar, and the ambitious vision for a city and a tower?

Though men have free will, they also have an innate ability to receive inspiration, insight, and whispers from realms beyond their senses. This is how Satan was able to speak to Eve, and it is also how God communicates with man. It's why Adam could name all the animals—he heard the whisper of Elohim.

Human will, therefore, often functions in cooperation with spiritual influence—whether divine or demonic. That’s why discernment is crucial. We must be able to trace the source of every thought, desire, and idea forming in our hearts.

In the plains of Shinar, men suddenly had the idea to make bricks, use tar, and build a city with a tower reaching to the heavens. They didn't just conjure these concepts on their own—they were inspired. They heard a whisper. They received a nudge. Sadly, the inspiration was not from God. It was a demonic scheme, another whisper from the curse, another attempt by Satan to manipulate humanity.

God’s response—confusing their language—revealed the true nature of their unity. It was rebellion, not righteousness. Their alliance was a corrupted one, infiltrated by darkness. Heaven had to intervene.

That’s why we must guard our hearts:

Proverbs 4:23 (NLT)
Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.

Your heart is a gate, a window, a receiver. It can be influenced, filled, manipulated—either by the Spirit of God or the spirits of darkness.

Proverbs 20:27 reminds us:
The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

God communicates through your spirit, your inner man. But Satan also seeks to gain access to the same place. That’s why it’s possible for people to speak God’s thoughts through prophecy, wisdom, or knowledge—and it’s also possible for demons to think and act through people, just like in Eden or Babel.

Shinar was another battleground for the minds and destinies of men, just as the Garden was.

If you are born again, the Holy Spirit dwells in your spirit. But if not, Satan will persistently try to woo and gain mastery over your heart. The Lord’s words to Cain are still relevant:

Genesis 4:7 (BSB)
If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you refuse to do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires you, but you must master it.

Your spirit is the door. Jesus knocks—He seeks to enter and take full possession. But sin also crouches—seeking to control.

So, check your heart again.

Who is in charge of it?
Are you mastering it with the help of the Holy Spirit, or has the enemy gained a foothold?
