Good morning to everyone. Grace and peace be with you.

I am on my third or fourth cup of coffee, one writing challenge read and judged, one full game of Scrabble with a friend on my phone and the dog is outside. Now … let’s get down to some serious writing today.

As I was taking the dog out, I was pondering on the topic for today. Several ideas passed though this chaotic corn maze of a brain, but then the image of a soldier, in the prone (lying down) position, with his fore hand and arm supported on sandbags, his rifle firmly gripped and tucked into the pocket of his shoulder, his other hand calmly securing the trigger grip, with his breathing methodically rhythmic. Carefully he sights in his target. With only the tip of his trigger finger in sync with his breathing, his sights are aligned as he depresses the trigger to fire a round down range at his target. Connection. The shot is off slightly. Adjustments are made to the sights. Repeat. Still off…a little more adjustment. Repeat. Bullseye. Center mass accomplished.

In the service we are trained in how to zero or sight in our assigned rifles so that if ever needed, we can hit what we are aiming at. Once the rifle is zeroed, then we must use those sights and qualify on the range. A certain percentage of hits or points are required in order to pass. Failure to pass could result in remedial training and eventually, dismissal from the service. It is a requirement to be able to qualify with your assigned weapon(s). As a Military Police Officer, I was required to qualify with several different styles. All requiring a certain demeanor slightly different from others, but still ultimately the same.

The concept of rifle qualifications is pretty basic, sight alignment, breathing, and trigger pull. If any one of those things is not smoothly executed and your shot will not hit its expected target.

The same concept can be applied to our walk with Christ.

If our sight is not on Him, if our breathing (language and demeanor) is not secured in Him, if our trigger pull (communication) is not all in sync…our attempts will not fall where we expect them to.

To ensure that we hit our target, we must be zeroed in. We must have our sights on Him. We must be familiar with our weapon (the bible). We must adjust our sights as we learn our assigned weapon’s needs, for us, and our ability. We must listen to our instructor’s guidance (Holy Spirit). Walking in Him, is very much like qualifying with your rifle in the service. It can be difficult, but it is definitely not impossible.

Becoming familiar with your spiritual weapon is very simple. Open it. Read it. Pray on it. Learn from it. Apply it. The more you are familiar with it, the better your aim will be at destroying the enemy’s lies. Take time today and seek the Father’s guidance on which part of your rifle you need to learn about and proceed to familiarize yourself with it. Currently, I am in Acts. Though I have read it and listened to it many times, this time around, I am learning things I have missed or forgotten. What part of the weapon do you need to learn?

Be blessed today my friends.
