INDECENT DRESSING AND EXPOSING NAKEDNESS
By Pastor Prof. Akan Bassey
There was a time when the message from the pulpit was clear and undiluted. The Church boldly preached about Holiness, the Kingdom of God, Righteousness, Heaven, Paradise, Hell Fire, Eternal Life, Eternal Suffering, Resurrection, and the coming Judgement Day. These powerful and convicting truths produced visible results among believers—one of which was decent dressing. The fear of God and reverence for His holiness governed not only the hearts but also the appearance of those who professed faith in Christ.
Back then, modesty was not a suggestion; it was a fruit of sanctification. Young men and women, touched by the message of the Cross, renounced worldly fashions and clothed themselves with dignity. The Church stood as a beacon of light, separated from the corruption of the world.
But what has happened to our generation?
As self-appointed pastors rose to popularity—many of whom were never called, trained, or truly converted—they began replacing the old rugged message with smooth, ear-tickling doctrines. Today, prosperity, materialism, and motivational slogans have taken the place of biblical truth. The pulpit has gone silent on hell, judgment, righteousness, and eternal consequences. Sermons against sin are now labeled as "judgmental," and holiness is mocked as "old-fashioned."
This shift in doctrine has birthed a new culture—a culture of nakedness. Indecent dressing, once shameful even in the world, has now found acceptance among professing Christians. Sadly, some churches no longer correct or confront this growing wave of moral decay. Instead, they promote entertainment, fashion shows, and celebrity-style services that only encourage more exposure of the body and less fear of God.
The truth remains: wherever the true Gospel is preached, modesty will follow. A heart transformed by the Holy Spirit cannot be comfortable in clothing that dishonors God. God has not changed—He still demands holiness both inside and out. Romans 12:1 calls us to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable unto God. This includes how we dress.
The dressing of a believer should be a testimony, not a temptation.
We must return to the days when the altar was not for fashion parades but for brokenness and repentance. Pastors must rise again to call sin by its name, not sugarcoat it. If we continue to entertain the people instead of evangelizing them, we will soon have churches full of sinners who are comfortable in sin, and empty of saints who are set apart for God.
It is time for the Church to wake up. The trumpet of God is about to sound. Let every believer examine themselves. Let pastors return to preaching truth, not trends. Let the Church once again be clothed with righteousness—and let our appearance reflect the holiness of the One who saved us.
“Come out from among them and be ye separate,” says the Lord. “Touch not the unclean thing, and I will receive you.” (2 Corinthians 6:17)
Let us dress as those who are heaven-bound, not hell-driven.
