St. Celestine V was a hermit for many years, devoting his life to God through prayer, solitude, and the copying of sacred texts while helping other hermits. Seeking a more ascetic spiritual life, he founded a stricter branch of the Benedictine order known as the Order of the Celestines, which reflected his ideals of simplicity and devotion. At the age of 84, this humble and holy man was unexpectedly elected Pope. Known for his kindness and simplicity, many took advantage of him during his short papacy, which lasted only five months. To avoid further exploitation, he resigned.
