WHAT REALLY MATTERS
“I want you to show love, not offer sacrifices. I want you to know me more than I want burnt offerings.”
HOSEA 6:6 NLT In Luke 10:38–42,
Jesus went to visit a family He loved—Lazarus, Mary, and Martha. When He arrived at their house, Mary stopped everything she was doing so she could learn from Him. Martha, however, was distracted by all that was still to be done, so she kept working. She also felt slighted that Mary wasn’t helping with the chores.
In a culture that valued hospitality as theirs did, Martha’s reaction was understandable. She wanted her home to be as comfortable and welcoming to Jesus as possible out of respect for Him. However, when Martha complained about Mary, Jesus replied, “Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41–42).
From their story, we learn that God’s expectations for us may be very different from the ones we have for ourselves. Yes, He wants us to serve Him. But His even greater desire for us is that we spend time with Him because He knows that our effective service flows from our moments of profound, intimate communion with Him.
Jesus, I set my heart on You. Speak to me, help me love You more, and lead me to serve as You desire. Amen.
