ATTITUDE (24) By BBJohn
Praying is the fifteenth attitude; a spiritual attitude that drives our relationship with God our Maker. It is an essential communication habit required in our daily relationship with God.
In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus didn’t say ‘If you pray’. He said ‘When you pray.’ This implies that prayer is a must-do-task. For we believers, prayer should be a devotional attitude and a serious duty to perform. It shouldn't be a pastime or something we do when we like. It is vital that we cultivate an attitude of praying seriously, see intercession as duty, and intentionally strategize to execute a ministry of prevailing prayer.
We will never grow in our prayer life until we see prayer as a devotional duty and handle it intentionally.
Jesus gave us three principles of prayer:
(1). The principle of sincerity of purpose. We must do away with hypocrisy in prayer. Let us learn to avoid self-glory, self-admiration, show-off of prayer skills, and attention seeking in prayer. It is insincere to pray to be seen by people. It is hypocritical to try to win admiration and praise of people. (Matthew 6: 5)
(2). Second is the principle of secrecy. Jesus teaches us to build a prayer closet. He wants us to cultivate the habit of building strong prayer altar in a secret place where we frequently meets with Him. When we pray in secret to God who sees and hears in secret He will reward us in the open. Let's learn to build strong prayer altar in our closets; a secret but conducive and viable place for spiritual communion with God. (Matt. 6: 6)
(3). Thirdly is the principle of simplicity of request. Jesus teaches us against repeating same words, same request, when we pray. Vain repetitions in prayer violates the principle of simplicity and faith. When praying, let's know that we have the Omniscient to deal with and He, being a loving heavenly Father, knows what we want to ask even before we come before Him. Much speaking and vain repetitions is the way of the world and we need not to do ‘as the heathen do.’ Simplicity demands that we should be faith-driven, plain, and straightforward in praying. Let's learn to say a few productive words of faith before God in prayer and that will suffice. (Matt. 6: 7 – 8)
