ATTITUDE (25) By BBJohn
Jesus gave a 6-part prayer model to His disciples and that is our prayer guide. The framework provided in the Lord's prayer is our prayer model. Let's examine the 6-part one by one:
i. ADMIRATION
Jesus taught us to begin our prayer with reverence to God. Our first duty in prayer is to honor God's holy name with reverence, acknowledging His holiness and worthiness in hearty worship and praise. Let's learn to come before the throne of mercy in a Father -child relationship with admiration, respect, humility, and gratitude.
"Our father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name..." (Matt. 6: 9)
ii. ASPIRATION
After admiration we proceed to aspiration. This is aspiration for God's Kingdom and will, heartily desiring for the arrival of His Kingdom and the accomplishment of His heaven-birthed will on earth. It is when His kingdom comes and His will is done in earth as it is in heaven that we begin to experience heaven on earth. This is a vital key to witnessing God's awesome presence and mighty power. Let's therefore learn to pray this with pure passion for the reign of His power and glory in the universe.
"Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven". (Matt. 6:10)
iii. APPLICATION
The third part of prayer is application, making supplication for provisions. We apply for our needs and tender our request for necessities and physical sustenance with simple faith, in a Father -child relationship. We should employ trust with total reliance on God to meet our daily needs. Coming to Him should be in a spirit of meekness, trust, and dependence.
"Give us this day our daily bread." (Matt. 6:11)
iv. ABSOLUTION
The next is absolution, which has to do with forgiveness. It is important that we seek pardon from God and offer it to our fellow man. Jesus makes it clear that getting forgiveness from God is connected to our willingness, sincerity and ability to absolve, pardon and forgive others. Failure on our part to forgive someone who hurts us hinders us from receiving forgiveness from GOD.
"And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors… For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your heavenly Father forgive your trespasses." (Matt. 6: 12, 14 - 15)
v. FORTIFICATION AND LIBERATION
The fifth part is prayer for protection against temptation and deliverance from evil. Jesus taught us to pray for divine protection from temptation and deliverance from evil. God isn't the one who leads us into temptation but, rather, the ONE who protects, fortifies, and shields us from temptation and also delivers from evil. More than in any age, we who live in this present age needs God's protection from all kinds of evils, trouble, trials, temptations, sexual enticement, and spiritual attacks.
"And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil…." (Matt. 6: 13a)
vi. AFFIRMATION
This is how to end our prayer - with affirmation. This has to do with declaration of God’s sovereignty, authority and rules over all things. We must acknowledge the truth that the Kingdom, the power and the glory inherently belongs to God and to God alone. He isn't just the Maker of all things. He is also the Owner of the kingdom, the power and the glory. Let's therefore give all glory to the One who made and owns us and all things; sharing no glory with Him.
"For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever. Amen."
(Matt. 13b)
