ATTITUDE (26) By BBJohn

Fasting is the sixteenth attitude we need to cultivate. It is a spiritual attitude that should go hand-in-hand with the attitude of praying.

Like prayer, fasting is must do task. That’s why Jesus said ‘When you fast’ and ‘if you fast’. Believers in Christ are supposed to fast constantly, not casually. Also, we're to take fasting as a dutiful devotional habit and couple it with prayer to make it more effective and efficacious.

Like prayer, fasting plays vital roles in our relationship with God and engagement in spiritual warfare. There are demonic forces we can't just humiliated without fasting.

PRINCIPLES OF FASTING

The Scripture gives us three principles of fasting:

1. SINCERITY
Fasting should be done with a honest heart, a heart without any forms of hypocrisy. Jesus taught us to avoid attention-seeking, showing-off, insincerity, pretense, two-faced-ness, and other forms of fakes when we fast. He told us not disfigure our faces or do any other thing that will reveal to the people around us that we’re fasting. (Matt 6: 16; Isa. 58:5)

2. SECRECY
This is the second principle of fasting - secrecy. Fasting should be a secret thing between us and God. To achieve this objective, Jesus taught us to constantly anoint our heads with oil and wash our faces with water when we fast. Doing so when fasting will brighten up our countenances. (Matt. 6: 17 – 18)

3. PURITY
He who lives a fasting life shouldn’t get involve in sinning. Sin is incompatible with fasting; they don’t go together. So, you must quit sinning if you must live a productive and rewarding fasting and praying life. You must break-off the yokes of sin, do away with little, little sins, and draw near to God. Yes, let's do away with little, little dishonesty, lying, exaggeration, sexual pleasure, cheating, fraud, strife, anger, speaking vanity, keeping malice, and hot argument. (Isa. 58: 3 – 4, 9, 13)
