Maybe because those sins we’ve actually committed. God doesn’t excuse any sexual sin, folks. We all need to repent

Kingdom Living Thank you for starting a bible reading plan on the commands of Christ. This is an exceedingly important topic. In fact, the Great Commission describes the process of making disciples as baptizing people and teaching them to obey all Christ commanded. There are a number of lists of the commands of Christ. I will add one more. This reading plan will primarily be based on my list. Perhaps the most well-known list of the commands of Christ summarizes them in just seven commands. I feel there is value, however, in a more complete look at the topic. If we want the simplest list possible then we should probably just limit ourselves to the Great Commandment (and the Second) as Jesus did. If we love God with all our being and love our neighbor as ourselves then all the other commands will be fulfilled. In fact, Jesus equated loving Him with obeying Him. That is another way we can look at it. Obedience to the commands of Christ has nothing to do with legalism or with somehow earning salvation. It is the response of our grateful heart in love to the One who loved us and gave Himself for us. It is done in the power of the Holy Spirit Whom He has given us. It is evidence of our new life in Him. It is the expression of our love for Him. As it says in 1 John 5:3, “this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome.” It is not an onerous duty but an overflow of loving gratitude. Christ is our King. His desire is our aim. He has specific plans for what He wants to do in us in conforming us to His image. He has specific plans for what He wants to do through us as we are told in Ephesians 2:10: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” We want to please Him. We want His will to be done. That is what life in the Kingdom is all about. Kingdom living is about seeing His will done on earth as it is in heaven. That starts with obeying Jesus’ commands. Do you ever wonder why an all-powerful God bothers to work his plan through people like you? Hardly seems effective. Definitely not necessary. Especially if you're talking about the audacity of "saving" someone - surely that's Jesus' department alone. While it certainly is the Savior’s ability that is required, it’s unmistakably your responsibility that’s requested and your availability that’s expected. Whatever his reasons are, God will keep working through people like you; so it might as well be you. Today you'll encounter a vision of God's inaugurating inquiry of Isaiah in a moment at the throne. Place yourself in the same moment. Notice his volunteerism. Notice yours. Sift out with Jesus and yourself in your vision: "Am I volunteering to be a Disciple-Maker?" Disciple-Making Disciples How to do life A fully devoted follower of Christ is someone who is becoming like Jesus for the sake of others. And what did Jesus spend His life doing? Making disciples. So becoming like Jesus means that we too are called to make disciples. In fact, Jesus makes that super clear in the Great Commission, His final charge before ascending into heaven. 16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:16-20 NIV Discipleship is the process of becoming like Jesus for the sake of others. When we break this passage down, we realize that the invitation to be part of Jesus’ mission is all-encompassing. It is the thing that answers the biggest questions in life. Questions like: Who is God? Who am I? Where do I belong? What difference do I make? Jesus invites us to discover those answers through the process of discipleship. What is important to note, though, is that discipleship is not a super smooth process where you move seamlessly from point A to B to C. It is much more like a game of follow-the-leader. You don’t necessarily know what their next move is going to be, so you keep your eyes glued to the leader. You stick close. That’s what Jesus has invited us into—a relationship with Him where we stick close and let Him show us how to live. But letting Jesus show us how to live means we choose to let go of our way of living. And that’s not easy. Jesus likens it loosing our lives: 23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. Luke 9:23-24 NIV Denying ourselves. Losing our lives. That’s strong language. Why is Jesus talking like this? Because, in all honesty, following Jesus is not easy. The way of life that He modeled literally got Him killed. There is a cost to discipleship, and Jesus Himself challenges us to count the cost. Not because He is trying to scare you away with how intense His boot camp is, but because He wants you to have the confidence that comes from knowing how high the cost is and finding out that He is worth it. Challenge/Journal:Why is it worth it to you to follow Jesus? If someone asked you why you want to know and follow Christ, what would you say? Spend some time counting the cost today. Journal your answers to those questions, and ask Jesus to speak to you. Then, invite someone to go through the rest of this Bible Plan with you! Disciples in Jesus’s day would follow their rabbi (which means teacher) wherever he went, learning from the rabbi’s teaching and being trained to do as the rabbi did. Basically, a disciple is a follower, but only if we take the term “follower” literally. Becoming a disciple of Jesus is as simple as obeying His call to follow. When Jesus called His first disciples, they may not have understood where Jesus would take them or the impact it would have on their lives, but they knew what it meant to follow. They took Jesus’s call literally and began going everywhere He went and doing everything He did. It’s impossible to be a disciple or a follower of someone and not end up like that person. Jesus said, “A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher” (Luke 6:40). That’s the whole point of being a disciple of Jesus: we imitate Him, carry on His ministry, and become like Him in the process. Yet somehow many have come to believe that a person can be a “Christian” without being like Christ. A “follower” who doesn’t follow. How does that make any sense? Many people in the church have decided to take on the name of Christ and nothing else. This would be like Jesus walking up to those first disciples and saying, “Hey, would you guys mind identifying yourselves with Me in some way? Don’t worry, I don’t actually care if you do anything I do or change your lifestyle at all. I’m just looking for people who are willing to say they believe in Me and call themselves Christians.” Seriously? No one can really believe that this is all it means to be a Christian. But then why do so many people live this way? It appears that we’ve lost sight of what it means to be a follower of Jesus.
