“Holstege puts faith wholly within the will and power of man. Faith, for Holstege, is nothing more than the activity of man. After saying, “Not those who work; those who believe,” he follows with this question: “Do you believe in the Lord Jesus?” I suppose one may ask this question, but it ought to be entirely out of place in a sermon on this text. The point of the text is that God manifests his righteousness in the fullest sense of the word. Again, this implies God’s work of faith. But Holstege left his hearers with a general righteousness of Christ at the cross, with only a possibility of righteousness, and so therefore, in his sermon the question is entirely fitting. The crux of Holstege’s sermon is not the cross of Christ, but the crux of the matter is whether or not man believes. "The PRC (Protestant Reformed Churches) insists that a believer can now act prior to God’s act. That in the order of God’s operation, there is an aspect where man is first. If they insist on man’s act of faith as prior act in the order of God’s dealing with him, then that only means that they are humiliating God while man is very well respected and considered. This insistence of the PRC is Arminian and Romish. It does not matter if the context is the experience of covenant fellowship and salvation. It fits nicely in the doctrine and gospel of the Arminians and Roman Catholics. But the whole point of James is the fellowship of God with his people and the power of him to draw his people to himself.
