    Good Poverty.

    August 6th, 2026

At least 80 percent of people around the world live on less than $10 a day. The poorest 40 percent of the world’s population accounts for just five percent of global income. The richest 20 percent accounts for three-quarters of the world’s income. And according to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. Children are often the quiet sufferers in poverty.

They die quietly in some of the poorest villages on Earth, far from the awareness and conscience of the world. Being weak and meek in life makes these dying masses even more invisible in death. Measles, malaria, and diarrhea are the three biggest killers of children, and they are all preventable. HIV/AIDS has created more than 14 million orphans; 92 percent of them live in Africa.

So how could Jesus say, “Blessed are you poor, for yours is the kingdom of God” (Luke 6:20)? Doesn’t Christ have a heart for the poor, especially children? Jesus absolutely cares about the underprivileged. He spent almost all of His ministry reaching out in kindness and love to the sick and dying. Then what does Christ mean when He says, “Blessed are you poor”?

Our Lord is not speaking of physical poverty, but of spiritual poverty. In other words, the kingdom of heaven belongs to those who recognize that there is nothing they can bring to God to ensure salvation except their outstretched hands. No works, no money, no pilgrimages, no “nothing,” will impress God to save you. When we stand before the Lord, we are all “dirt poor.” And that’s a good thing, because to acknowledge our great spiritual need is the first step in receiving God’s free gift of salvation.

Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? (James 2:5 KJV)

  • So they took their journey from Succoth and camped in Etham at the edge of the wilderness. And the Lᴏʀᴅ went before them.

    Exodus 13:20–21 ɴᴋᴊᴠ

Now the time had come: the desert was actually right in front of the Israelites. Moses later described it as “the great and terrible wilderness.” He did not understate it one bit! What feelings must the Israelites have had when they saw this vast unknown area before them? They may have imagined the dangers that lurked there. Perhaps they thought of the almost unforeseeable needs of their great people, even just water and food for people and animals!

And indeed, if we take this desert as a symbol for the wilderness in which the people of God still move today, namely the world, then fear is appropriate on the one hand, because dangers are there, and they are real! If we do not see them, we will fall.

So there they were in Etham, “at the edge of the wilderness.” Moving forward, right? “And the Lᴏʀᴅ went before them.” The Lord! Before them! They only had to follow, then the way was clear and safe. He not only gave them aids, not only a leader from their midst, like Moses; He took it upon Himself to lead them.

The entire security of God’s wandering people lies in their dependence on their God and in obedience, today as much as ever. He still goes before those who belong to Him. He shows them the way, protects them from the dangers of the path, provides for all necessities, and allows them to experience the blessing of fellowship with Him. And in the end, soon, He brings them to the promised land—not to Canaan, from which the enemies still had to be driven out, but to the Father’s house, which is filled with the love of the Father and the Son.

    Read; Psalm 23:1-3

He improves my mood. That sounds fantastic, wow. But it goes beyond words. God gives us the courage to carry on walking even when we feel like giving up. His strength keeps us going when things are tough and aids in our victory. We are able to soar through the skies like eagles when we triumph in His name. He is not merely a shepherd; He is the one who keeps us alive and is our Rock.

    Prayer
Help me, gentle Shepherd, to sleep peacefully tonight knowing that You are watching over me. In Jesus' precious name I pray. Amen.

  • Observing how the writers of the Bible arranged their material aids us in our understanding of Scripture. In Amos 1-6, the prophet’s messages are prefaced with “this is what the Lord says” (see 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 13) or some other call to “hear” what God has to say (see 3:1; 4:1). In Amos 7, there’s a noticeable shift from “words” spoken by God Himself to “visions” God “showed” the prophet (v. 1). This pattern continues for the remainder of the book (see 8:1; 9:1). The visions of chapter 7 include a plumbline used to see if a wall was straight (vv. 7-8). It represented a standard for correctness. The standard for correct living for believers in Jesus is Christ Himself. The apostle John says, “Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked” (1 John 2:6 esv).
