• Here I Am, Send Me: A Call to Equip the Church Through Biblical Training
    Isaiah 6:8
"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here am I. Send me!'" (Isaiah 6:8)
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
My name is Masirheni Robert Mahlaule. I am a 71-year-old South African Christian, a member of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) since 1979, and an ordained preacher since 1997. For nearly five decades I have devoted my life to serving God and His people. Today, I write with humility and hope, seeking support to continue preparing myself for greater service through theological education.
I survive on a government old-age grant of ZAR 2 400 (approximately 130 US dollars) per month, which is barely enough to cover my basic living expenses. As a result, I am unable to raise the funds required to pursue an Associate Bachelor's Degree in Divinity, despite my deep desire to continue learning and serving. I therefore appeal to generous individuals, churches, ministries, and Christian organizations to consider partnering with me in this important mission.
    My Journey of Faith
My journey with Christ did not begin in a classroom or a seminary. It began through suffering.
Before I joined the ZCC, I was seriously ill. I spent much of my time in and out of hospitals seeking medical help. Like many Africans in desperate circumstances, I also consulted traditional healers, hoping to find relief from my condition. Yet nothing seemed to work.
When I eventually came to the ZCC, pastors prayed for me and laid hands on me. Within three days I could feel a remarkable difference. Week by week my condition improved, and before long I was back on my feet. God had touched my life.
However, looking back, I realise that being healed was not the same as being converted. When I was baptised, I simply joined the church; I had not yet experienced true conversion.
My genuine conversion came later through the preaching of the Gospel. The turning point was when the late Evangelist Billy Graham visited Johannesburg. Through his ministry I came to understand salvation through Jesus Christ in a deeper and more personal way. My faith became rooted not merely in church membership but in a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. From that time onward, my life was transformed.
    My Calling to Ministry
As I grew in faith, I developed a strong desire to serve others. More than a decade after joining the church, I was ordained as a preacher. Since 1997 I have faithfully carried out the responsibilities entrusted to me.
I have been authorised to preach the Word of God, pray for the sick, conduct funeral services, and minister to people in times of need. These responsibilities have brought me into contact with people from all walks of life, and they have taught me that the greatest need within the church is not merely growth in numbers but growth in biblical understanding.
Over the years, I have witnessed the power of God's Word to transform lives. I have also witnessed the confusion and spiritual challenges that arise when church leaders lack adequate biblical training. This reality has strengthened my conviction that sound theological education is one of the most urgent needs facing the church today.
    The Challenge Facing the ZCC
The Zion Christian Church is one of the largest churches in Africa, with millions of members. Throughout its history it has offered hope, healing, fellowship, and spiritual support to countless people.
However, like many churches, it faces significant challenges. One of the most pressing is the shortage of adequately Bible-trained pastors and teachers.
Where biblical knowledge is limited, misunderstandings and unchristian practices can emerge. Church leadership may work hard to address such issues, but without well-trained pastors who are grounded in Scripture, these challenges can persist from generation to generation.
I firmly believe that the most effective antidote to error is not criticism but education. The church needs pastors who understand the Bible thoroughly and who can teach God's Word with wisdom, clarity, and conviction.
Such training requires resources, commitment, and opportunities that are often beyond the reach of ordinary church members.
    Christianity and African Culture
Another issue that often causes misunderstanding concerns the relationship between Christianity and African culture.
Some Christians become concerned when they hear that African cultural practices have a place within African churches. They sometimes assume that all African culture is synonymous with ancestor veneration or other spiritual practices that they believe conflict with Christian teaching.
I believe such assumptions oversimplify a much more complex reality.
African culture is rich, diverse, and multifaceted. It cannot be reduced to a single belief, ritual, or worldview. Culture includes language, music, dress, family relationships, moral values, customs, community life, and many other aspects of human experience.
It is helpful to recognise that culture operates on different levels. There is expressive culture, social culture, ethical culture, and ritual or spiritual culture.
A church may wholeheartedly embrace African languages, music, customs of respect, family values, and community solidarity while still questioning or discouraging certain practices that carry particular religious significance.
The real question is not whether African culture matters. It certainly does. The real question is whether any particular practice is consistent with biblical teaching about God, worship, and salvation.
Christianity has always lived within cultures. Beginning in first-century Judaism, the Gospel spread into Greek, Roman, African, and Middle Eastern societies. The early church adopted local languages and social forms to communicate the Gospel effectively. At the same time, it rejected practices that conflicted with biblical faith.
This challenge remains with us today. We must respect culture while remaining faithful to Scripture. We must distinguish between what is cultural and what is theological. Doing so requires mature leadership and sound biblical training.
Why I Have Chosen to Remain in the ZCC
Throughout my years of ministry, I have had opportunities to leave the ZCC and join churches with greater resources.
On several occasions, leaders from other churches approached me with attractive offers. I was promised better financial support, housing, vehicles, and other incentives that would undoubtedly have improved my standard of living.
    Yet I declined those offers.
I remained because I believe that God called me to serve where the need is greatest.
Historically, the ZCC has served many ordinary Africans, including people who had little formal education. Many were drawn to African Initiated Churches because they felt misunderstood or marginalised during earlier periods of missionary activity.
Some Africans were pressured to abandon traditional names in favour of European ones. Others faced difficult demands regarding family arrangements and cultural identity. Whether justified or not, many felt alienated.
The ZCC became a spiritual home where they could worship God while maintaining aspects of their cultural identity.
For this reason, I believe the church deserves leaders who can combine deep biblical faith with an understanding of the people they serve.
    My Vision for the Future
My vision is simple but ambitious.
I want to be part of a movement that equips pastors, Sunday School teachers, and church leaders with sound biblical knowledge.
Recently, I completed a Sunday School Manual, which has been submitted to church headquarters for approval. My hope is that this resource will strengthen the teaching ministry of our church and help provide solid biblical foundations for the next generation.
I also actively encourage pastors and church workers who are able to read and write to pursue theological education. Whenever possible, I introduce them to opportunities such as the Christian Leaders Institute (CLI) and other learning resources.
Yet many faithful pastors face significant barriers. Some have limited educational backgrounds. Others cannot read or write English fluently, although they are capable ministers in their own African languages.
My desire is to help bridge this gap. With further theological education, I hope to mentor, train, and encourage these servants of God, enabling them to minister more effectively within their communities.
    My Appeal for Sponsorship
This is why I am seeking sponsorship for my Associate Bachelor's Degree in Divinity.
At my age, some may wonder why I still wish to study. My answer is simple: because the need remains great, and God has not withdrawn His calling from my life.
I may be seventy-one years old, but I still possess a passion for learning, teaching, and serving. I believe that additional theological training will equip me to contribute even more effectively to the church and to the preparation of future leaders.
Unfortunately, my financial circumstances make it impossible for me to pay the required fees. My old-age grant barely covers daily living expenses, leaving no funds available for further education.
I therefore humbly ask any individual, church, ministry, educational institution, or Christian organisation that shares my vision to consider assisting me financially.
Your contribution would not simply support one elderly student. It would help equip a preacher who is committed to training and encouraging others. The benefits would extend beyond me to pastors, teachers, church members, and communities that may never have access to formal theological training.
    Conclusion
For many years, I have attempted to serve faithfully wherever God has placed me. I have prayed for the sick, preached the Gospel, buried the dead, taught believers, and encouraged church leaders. I have sacrificed opportunities for personal gain because I believe my calling is here among the people of the ZCC.
Today I ask for your partnership.
As Isaiah responded to God's call centuries ago, my response remains the same:
    "Here I am. Send me."
My willingness to serve is unwavering. My vision is clear. My need is genuine.
With your support, I can obtain the education necessary to strengthen my ministry and help equip others for the work of God's Kingdom.
Thank you for considering my request and for taking the time to hear my story.

    THE FLESH AND THE SPIRIT.

    Understanding Romans 7

Joe Crews. (Expanded by Doug batchelor)

An oxymoron is a phrase in which
    words of contradictory meanings are
    used together for special effect—for
example, wise fool or legal murder. Some can
be quite humorous, such as pretty ugly, working
    vacation, or jumbo shrimp.
A new phrase used by some Christians also
qualifies as an oxymoron: carnal Christians.
These two words don’t seem like they are sup-
posed to go together. After all, the word carnal
    means “animal, sensual, unregenerate, fleshly.”
Can it really be used as a proper adjective for
a born-again Christian, who has turned from
the world to the kingdom of God?
Still, many sincere people believe carnal
is a helpful characterization of the normal

Understanding Romans 7 4 The Flesh and the Spirit
    Christian experience. Others, of course,
strongly disagree. They say the term is self-
contradictory; they deny the existence of a
hybrid creature who could be Christ-like and
    carnal at the same time.
At the heart of this complex issue is this
question: Is the converted Christian controlled
by the Spirit or by the flesh?
This controversy is very much rooted in
something the Apostle Paul wrote in his epistle
to the Romans. Sandwiched right between two
of the most triumphant chapters in the Bible,
Paul penned 25 verses that have given rise to
all the theological conflict on this subject.
In order to properly understand those
cryptic 25 verses that make up Romans 7, we
must briefly examine the companion chapters
surrounding it. Though written by the same
author, the ideas found in chapters 6 and 8
seem to be at total odds with the one that is
between them. A tremendous theme of to-
tal victory over sin flows powerfully through
Romans 6 and 8, but Romans 7 seems to cata-
log only frustration and defeat. How could the
same man describe such opposite personal
experiences within the same few pages? The
question becomes even more significant when Understanding Romans 7 5
we consider that in all his other prolific writ-
ings, Paul never repeated such expressions of
hopelessness as he recorded in Romans 7.
    Let’s take a closer look.
    Sold Under Sin?
Can you imagine how these words could
ever apply to that spiritual giant who was Paul:
“I am carnal, sold under sin … bringing me
into captivity to the law of sin. … What I hate,
that do I. … O wretched man that I am! who
shall deliver me from the body of this death?”
    (Romans 7:14, 23, 15, 24)?
    What does this miserable, sin-bound
creature have in common with the experi-
ence described in the preceding chapter? “We
… are dead to sin, … freed from sin. … Let
not sin therefore reign. … Sin shall not have
dominion over you. … Shall we sin? God
forbid … being then made free from sin”
    (Romans 7:2, 7, 12, 14, 15, 18).
And how could Paul himself harmonize
this wretched state of Romans 7 with the soar-
ing experience of Spirit-filled victory described
in Romans 8? “There is therefore now no con-
demnation, … made me free from the law of
sin … righteousness-fulfilled in us, … mortify 6 The Flesh and the Spirit
the deeds of the body. … We are the children of
    God” (Romans 8:1, 2, 4, 13, 16).
The crux of the “carnal Christian” argument
is brought into view by Paul’s bold assertion that
he is “carnal, sold under sin” (Romans 7:14),
yet declaring in chapter 8 that “to be carnally
minded is death. The carnal mind is enmity
against God: for it is not subject to the law of
God, neither indeed can be” (Romans 8:6,7).
Is Paul really saying that he is not a
Christian and is the enemy of God? Is he con-
ceding that his life is fleshly and therefore un-
    der the sentence of death?
    Of course not!
On the other hand, if Paul is describing
his experience after his conversion, we must
admit that there are irreconcilable differences
between chapter 7 and the rest of his writing.
Therefore, with an honest look, we are
led to the unavoidable conclusion that Paul
is not describing his born-again experience
at all. We must reject the concept that one
can be controlled by the flesh, at enmity with
God and condemned to death, and still be in a
spiritually saved condition. The wretched man
who cries out in despair for deliverance has
obviously never been delivered from his sins. Understanding Romans 7 7
Why, then, does Paul portray himself in such a
    state of hopeless bondage?
Although the picture at this point might
be a little confusing, we can have assurance
that Paul has a very clear and convincing rea-
son for writing Romans 7. When we follow the
logic of this man, the prince of apostles, we can
understand perfectly why he worked in this
material exactly as he did, when he did.
    The Law in Salvation
It is important to clearly understand that
Romans 7 is given entirely as an explanation of
the law and its role in the process of salvation.
In the preceding chapter, Paul explains how
justification came upon all the world through
one man. Most of the material presented in
chapters 1 through 5 deal with the theology
of righteousness by faith, with the chief focus
    on justification.
Then in Romans 6, Paul moves into the
area of sanctification and begins to describe
the effect of being saved by grace. This chapter
is taken up with a portrayal of perfect obedi-
ence and sin-free living. Over and over, Paul
asserts that sin (breaking the law) cannot
prevail against the power of God’s justifying 8 The Flesh and the Spirit
grace. The consistent, habitual pattern of the
child of God will be to reject sin. Obedience to
the law is the fruit of true justification.
But even though holy living and law
keeping will mark the lifestyle of every true
Christian, Paul doesn’t want anyone to mis-
understand the specific role of the law in the
process of salvation. Important as it is, the law
has its limitations. It cannot cleanse or sanctify.
Although it marks out the path of God’s per-
fect will, there is no redeeming grace in the law
to justify a single person. Its primary function
is to convict, condemn, and create a desire for
deliverance. Then, like a loving schoolmaster, it
will conduct the sinner to Jesus for free cleans-
    ing and grace.
So what does Paul do at this point? He in-
serts 25 verses that carefully define the function
of the law in leading a person to Christ. And
by way of illustration, he uses his own experi-
ence with the law to show how it affected him
when he fell under its influence. He tells, in ret-
rospect, how the law opened his eyes to the real
nature of sin within him and “slew” him with
its devastating exposé of gross disobedience.
It is most important to acknowledge that
Romans 7 is Paul’s description of his reactions Understanding Romans 7 9
to the law before he was converted. He is lay-
ing out his unconverted heart’s bondage to
the carnal nature and his utter helplessness in
trying to fulfill the requirements of God’s law.
Step by step, he gives a heart-rending account
of his anguish under the prodding convictions
    of the law.
Yet many Christians conclude that Paul is
really describing his converted Christian ex-
perience in Romans 7, comforting themselves
with the notion that it is normal—and there-
fore acceptable—to be overcome by sin. They
express it in this way: “If Paul had no power to
do what he knew to be right, surely we cannot
be held accountable for disobeying also. After
all, it is not us, but sin in us, that is guilty of
the wrongdoing. God will not let us be lost as
long as we have the desire to do His will, even
though we do not ‘perform that which is good.’”
Yet if such an interpretation is correct, we
are immediately faced with the problem of har-
monizing hundreds of other texts in Scripture
that assure us that we should live without sin.
Can you see what a serious issue this becomes
    for every one of us?
Surely, it must be apparent that such a
teaching, if true, would have to be the best 10 The Flesh and the Spirit
news in the world for those who are not willing
to crucify their fleshly nature completely. With
two memorized texts, they could biblically
justify any act of disobedience and still feel se-
cure: “I am carnal, sold under sin … the evil
which I would not, that I do … it is no more I
that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.”
On the other hand, if this interpretation is
wrong, it is, without question, one of the most
dangerous teachings on Satan’s long list of de-
ceptions. The horrible import of teaching peo-
ple to tolerate that which God hates boggles
the mind. If sin really is non-negotiable in His
sight and will never enter into His kingdom,
then any doctrine that tries to make sin accept-
able to God could lead millions to damnation.
    The Law Did Not Die
Because this crucial chapter has been
twisted to support such a dangerous doctrine,
we need to analyze it carefully verse by verse.
Not even the smallest question should linger
concerning God’s attitude toward the practice
    of sin.
“Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak
to them that know the law,) how that Understanding Romans 7 11
the law hath dominion over a man
as long as he liveth? For the woman
which hath an husband is bound by
the law to her husband so long as he
liveth; but if the husband be dead, she
is loosed from the law of her husband.
So then if, while her husband liveth,
she be married to another man, she
shall be called an adulteress: but if
her husband be dead, she is free from
that law; so that she is no adulteress,
though she be married to another
    man. Wherefore, my brethren, ye
also are become dead to the law by
the body of Christ; that ye should be
married to another, even to him who
is raised from the dead, that we should
bring forth fruit unto God. For when
we were in the flesh, the motions of
sins, which were by the law, did work
in our members to bring forth fruit
unto death. But now we are delivered
from the law, that being dead wherein
we were held; that we should serve
in newness of spirit, and not in the
oldness of the letter” (Romans 7:1–6). 12 The Flesh and the Spirit
Here Paul uses the law of marriage to rep-
resent the spiritual relationship with Christ.
A woman is bound to her husband as long
as he lives. When he dies, she is free to mar-
ry someone else without being branded an
adulteress. Likewise, the sinner is represented
as being loosed from one relationship in or-
der to be bound by another. Many people as-
sume that Paul here is doing away with the
Ten Commandments. Not so. Paul is actually
speaking about the sinner in his experience
of turning from sin and becoming married to
Christ. The law itself did not die. Paul writes,
“Ye also are become dead … that ye should be
    married to another.”
Verse 5 makes it very clear that the sin-
ner is bound to his sinful nature. “For when
we were in the flesh, the motions [passions]
of sin did work in our members to bring forth
fruit unto death.” How did he get released
from that fleshly nature that wrought death in
him? “Ye … are become dead … by the body
of Christ.” In other words, by accepting the
atoning death of Jesus, the carnal mind was
destroyed, and “being dead wherein we were
held,” Paul says we are free to be married to
another, even Christ. Understanding Romans 7 13
Some might question why Paul writes that
we become “dead to the law” by the death of
Jesus. We must understand the context in
which this teaching is used. It is obvious from
verse 5 that we become dead to what the law
condemns in our nature: “the motions of sins,
which were by the law.” Here Paul introduces
the chief function of the law that he will reit-
erate throughout the chapter: The law exposes
the works of sin. It brings to light the activities
of the flesh. And in doing so, the law ratifies
the death sentence against all who are breaking
it. To be “dead to the law” and to be “delivered
from the law … wherein we were held” means
to be delivered from the sins that it condemns
and from the penalty of death that applies to
all who break the law. Being married to Christ
does not deliver us from obeying the law, but it
does deliver us from the penalty of death that
    results from having violated it.
What happens next? Because Paul has
identified the law as the instrument for point-
ing out sin, he now feels it necessary to exoner-
ate the law from any charges of being evil itself.
“What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God
forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the
law: for I had not known lust, except the law 14 The Flesh and the Spirit
had said, Thou shalt not covet” (Romans 7:7).
Even though its very nature reveals our sin,
Paul defends the law throughout the chapter as
    holy, just, good, and spiritual.
Many Christians make the very mistake
that Paul strongly warns against. With varying
degrees of animosity, they make the law of ab-
solutely no effect in the experience of salvation.
Not only do they reject its claims as the perfect
blueprint of right living, they also deny its as-
signed mission to convince of sin. Yet in the
most positive language, Paul declares earlier in
his epistle that there can be no sin without the
law: “For where no law is there, is no transgres-
sion” (Romans 4:15). He reinforces that point
by recounting his own experience with the Ten
Commandments: “I had not known sin, but by
    the law.”
    The Law Confronts Paul
Here we now find the important transition
point in chapter 7; it holds the key to the “car-
nal Christian” controversy. For the first time,
Paul begins to speak of his own personal rela-
tionship to the law. But notice that he carries
his readers back with him into the past. He be-
gins to write about his first encounter with the Understanding Romans 7 15
law. At that time, Paul says, “I had not known
sin.” In other words, he had not been aware of
breaking the law before that moment of spiri-
    tual conviction and enlightenment.
As a teacher of the Sanhedrin, there is little
doubt that Paul had vast intellectual knowl-
edge regarding all the religious laws of Israel,
including the Ten Commandments. He prided
himself as being flawless in meeting all the le-
gal requirements of those statutes. But all that
was changed on the day the Holy Spirit opened
his eyes to the superficial nature of his obedi-
ence. For the first time, he recognized that he
was only observing the letter of the law. His
empty works of self-justification appeared in
    their true light.
Paul does not tell us, and neither is it nec-
essary to know, just when this initial convic-
tion began to operate in his life. It is sufficient
to say that there was a period of time, whether
short or long, when his eyes were opened to
what he really should be before God. The law
had accomplished its task very well, and he
clearly discerned how broad and deep and
    comprehensive are its principles.
In recalling the agony of his soul during
those days of conflict, Paul writes: 16 The Flesh and the Spirit
“But sin, taking occasion by the
    commandment, wrought in me all
    manner of concupiscence. For without
the law sin was dead. For I was alive
without the law once: but when the
    commandment came, sin revived, and
I died. And the commandment, which
was ordained to life, I found to be unto
death. For sin, taking occasion by the
    commandment, deceived me, and by
it slew me. Wherefore the law is holy,
and the commandment holy, and just,
and good. Was then that which is good
made death unto me? God forbid.
But sin, that it might appear sin,
working death in me by that which is
good; that sin by the commandment
    might become exceeding sinful”
    (Romans 7:8–13).
Paul here continues to describe the per-
sonal reactions of his pharisaical nature to
that initial conviction of sin. It was absolutely
shattering for this famous religious teacher to
be exposed as a transgressor before God. The
experience was so intense that he could only
compare it to being happily alive without the Understanding Romans 7 17
law, and then suddenly crushed to death by the
consciousness of his guilt—the guilt that was
generated by the revelations of the law.
Paul marvels that something so righteous
and so good and so pure could stir up within
him such consciousness of evil. Like a power-
ful magnifying lens, the law had probed the re-
cesses of his legalistic soul, making sin appear
    “exceeding sinful.”
    No Power to Obey
Confessing that sin was “working death in
me,” Paul launches into the famous verses that
have been so terribly misapplied to the experi-
    ence of beleaguered saints:
“For we know that the law is spiritual:
but I am carnal, sold under sin. For
that which I do I allow not: for what I
would, that do I not; but what I hate,
that do I. If then I do that which I
would not, I consent unto the law that
it is good. Now then it is no more I that
do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I
know that in me (that is, in my flesh),
dwelleth no good thing: for to will is
present with me; but how to perform 18 The Flesh and the Spirit
that which is good I find not. For the
good that I would I do not: but the evil
which I would not, that I do. Now if
I do that I would not, it is no more I
that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
I find then a law, that, when I would
do good, evil is present with me. For
I delight in the law of God after the
inward man: But I see another law
in my members, warring against the
law of my mind, and bringing me
into captivity to the law of sin which
is in my members. O wretched man
that I am! who shall deliver me from
the body of this death? I thank God
through Jesus Christ our Lord. So
then with the mind I myself serve the
law of God; but with the flesh the law
    of sin” (Romans 7:14–25).
Some take the position that Paul’s state-
ment here, that the law is spiritual, proves
that he was a converted man. Yet the rest of
the verse plainly declares that he was carnal
and sold out to sin. Is it unusual for a sin-
ner to make such an admission about the
law? Not at all. At the end of time, millions of Understanding Romans 7 19
unconverted will acknowledge the truth of the
Ten Commandments. But believing the truth
and consenting to the law is not enough. It
must also be obeyed. And Paul knew that.
If anybody could appreciate the necessity
of doing the works of the law, it would cer-
tainly be Paul. And he did try! The rest of the
chapter is replete with his frustrated report of
trying and failing, trying and failing. Sadly, on
the basis of these texts, thousands of sermons
have been preached to explain why we should
not be too hung up on achieving a life of per-
fect obedience. If Paul found it impossible to
do good, and constantly did evil instead, why
should we get a guilt trip over our failures?
    Interestingly, the dispensers of these
soothing tranquilizers are not really compar-
ing apples with apples. Rather, they are com-
paring spiritual things with fleshly things. Let’s
allow Paul to clear up the matter for us quickly.
He writes, “I am carnal.” How does he define
the carnal condition? Just 18 verses down the
page, he explains: “For to be carnally minded
is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and
peace” (Romans 8:6). This is the third time that
Paul admits to being under the condemna-
tion of death. In Romans 7:10, he says, “The 20 The Flesh and the Spirit
commandment, which was ordained to life, I
found to be unto death.” In verse 13, he speaks
of sin “working death in me.” Can anyone ac-
cuse the great apostle of being confused about
the status of the justified believer? No. This is
his specialty. He understands very clearly that
justification and condemnation could not coex-
ist in the same person at the same time. Dozens
of times the regenerated Paul declares his free-
dom from the guilt and condemnation of the
law. Only in this chapter, where he describes
his unconverted experience, does he ever place
himself back under the death sentence.
    Convicted But Unconverted
Paul’s eyes had been opened. He had been
instructed and convicted by the law. He knew
what was right and desired to do it, but he
had not yet laid hold of the delivering power
of Christ. He was miserable. He hated himself
and everything he was doing. “But what I hate,
that do I” (Romans 7:15). The problem was
with his flesh. It was too weak to obey. “For I
know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth
    no good thing: for to will is present with me;
but how to perform that which is good I find
    not” (Romans 7:18). Understanding Romans 7 21
Why could Paul not obey in the flesh?
Because he uses that expression to repeatedly
describe the unconverted nature. In verse 5,
he says, “When we were in the flesh, the mo-
tions of sins … did work in our members.” In
Romans 8:3, he writes that the law could not
be kept by us because it was “weak through
    the flesh”
The old carnal power of sin made it impos-
sible for him to obey. In Paul’s mind, he was
willing, but he describes another law “in my
members, warring against the law of my mind.”
That other law was stronger than his good de-
sires and intentions—indeed, the rest of the
sentence reads, “and bringing me into captiv-
ity to the law of sin which is in my members”
    (Romans 7:23).
How clear it really is that the law of sin in
his members, or in his flesh, was the unregen-
erate carnal nature. It made a perfect slave out
of his body, compelling him to do evil things
that he hated and forcing out of him, finally,
that despairing cry, “O wretched man that I
am! who shall deliver me from the body of this
    death?” (Romans 7:24).
Here again, for the fourth time, Paul indi-
cates that the penalty of death was residing in 22 The Flesh and the Spirit
his body, or in his flesh, where sin had taken
    control of him.
Many will now point to verse 22 as the fi-
nal proof that Paul was converted during this
losing battle against sin: “For I delight in the
law of God after the inward man.” No one, they
say, could delight in the law unless he was born
again. But that is not true. In Romans 2:17, 18,
Paul addresses the Jews, saying even they have
an exalted concept of the law: “Behold, thou are
called a Jew, and restest in the law, and mak-
est thy boast of God, and knowest his will, and
approvest the things that are excellent, being
instructed out of the law.” Paul’s delight in the
law in the inward man merely reveals his total
mental acceptance of the law’s principles. He
holds the law in the very highest esteem. Prior
to his conversion, he had no problem with be-
lieving or being willing to obey. Yet without
Christ in his life, there was no enabling grace
to perform that which is good.
Did the apostle ever find the answer to his
plaintive cry for help? Did the wretched slave
ever obtain freedom? Was he finally loosed
from the captivity of the law of sin? Of course
he was. Just as soon as he accepted the Lord
Jesus, his chains fell off, his carnal nature was Understanding Romans 7 23
crucified, and he was set free from sin. Four
verses further, we read how the miracle hap-
pened: “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ
Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin
    and death.”
What a dramatic turnaround! But how has
Paul been set free from the very law of sin that
had captured him in Romans 7:23? He answers
that question himself: “I thank God through
    Jesus Christ our Lord.”
This point of conversion in Paul’s experi-
ence has been acknowledged in the writings
    of many well-known Bible commentators.
Here are three source statements that con-
firm Romans 7 is describing his unregener-
    ate nature:
    1. “It is difficult to conceive how the
opinion could have crept into the
Church, or prevailed there, that ‘the
apostle speaks here of his regener-
ate state; and that what was, in such
a state, true of himself, must be true
of all others in the same state.’ This
opinion has, most pitifully and most
shamefully, not only lowered the stan-
dard of Christianity, but destroyed 24 The Flesh and the Spirit
its influence and disgraced its charac-
    ter” (Adam Clarke’s Commentary on
    the Bible).
    2. “Oh, how many flatter themselves that
    they have goodness and righteousness,
when the true light of God reveals that
all their lives they have only lived to
    please themselves! Their whole con-
duct is abhorred of God. How many
are alive without the law! In their
    gross darkness they view themselves
with complacency; but let the law of
God be revealed to their consciences,
as it was to Paul, and they would see
that they are sold under sin and must
die to the carnal mind. Self must be
    slain” (Ellen G. White, Testimonies,
    vol. 3, p. 475).
    3. “It is impossible for us, of our selves,
to escape from the pit of sin in which
we are sunken. Our hearts are evil,
and we cannot change them. … ‘The
carnal mind is enmity against God.’
The Saviour said, ‘Except a man be
born from above, … he cannot see the Understanding Romans 7 25
kingdom of God.’ … It is not enough
    to perceive the loving-kindness of
God, to see the benevolence, the fa-
    therly tenderness, of His character.
… Paul the apostle saw all this when
he exclaimed, ‘I consent unto the law
that it is good. … The law is holy, and
    the commandment holy, and just,
and good.’ But he added, in the bit-
terness of his soul-anguish and de-
spair, ‘I am carnal, sold under sin’
    (Romans 7:16,12,14). He longed for
the purity, the righteousness, to which
in himself he was powerless to attain,
and cried out, ‘O wretched man that
I am! who shall deliver me from this
body of death?’ (Romans 7:24). Such is
the cry that has gone up from burdened
hearts in all lands and in all ages. To
all there is but one answer, ‘Behold the
Lamb of God, which taketh away the
sin of the world’ (John 1:29)” (Ellen G.
White, Steps to Christ, pp. 18, 19).
    Serving the Law of Sin
At this point, there remains one small per-
plexity in the wording of Romans 7:25. Some 26 The Flesh and the Spirit
have questioned how Paul could still talk about
serving the law of sin in the flesh after appar-
ently being delivered from the flesh in the same
text. “I thank God through Jesus Christ our
Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the
law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.”
In spite of the awkward phrasing, there is
no contradiction of the main theme. Paul gives
a quick, parenthetical answer to his desperate
question, “Who shall deliver me?” Then he
moves back to complete the point that he was
making in verse 23, which is about being in
captivity to the law of sin.
The very same sentence structure is found
in Revelation 20:4, 5. After describing the first
resurrection of people who would not receive
the mark of the beast, John writes, “But the rest
of the dead lived not again until the thousand
years were finished. This is the first resurrec-
tion.” As everyone recognizes, the “rest of the
dead” are the wicked who arise in the second
resurrection, not the first. So the very last sen-
tence, about the first resurrection, is actually
referring back to those who are described in
verse 4—those saints who had not received the
mark of the beast. Obviously, the first part of
verse 5 is thrown in parenthetically, and the Understanding Romans 7 27
final sentence, “This is the first resurrection,”
completes the thought that was being devel-
    oped in the previous verse.
In the same way, the final sentence of
Romans 7:25 is referring back to the theme of
verse 23 and is not directly related to the first
    part of verse 25.
You see, Paul has just reached the cli-
mactic point of logic and pathos in describ-
ing his abject condition of condemnation.
Verse 23 speaks of his captivity to sin, and
verse 24 reveals his agony of desire to be free:
“WHO SHALL DELIVER ME FROM THE
BODY OF THIS DEATH?” Giving a quick an-
swer to his rhetorical question, he encapsulates
in one final sentence the basic point he has
made throughout the chapter: His mind wills
to serve God, but his flesh forces him to serve
sin. “(I thank God through Jesus Christ our
Lord) so then with the mind I myself serve the
law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.”
Thus closes chapter 7 with its dismal dirge
of defeat, but Paul has not made this detour in
his epistle without good reason. Now his read-
ers are prepared to appreciate the scope of his
transformed experience under grace. It seems
to be one of Paul’s penchants to illustrate by 28 The Flesh and the Spirit
dramatic contrast the “much more” of grace
over sin (Romans 5:20, 21), of justification
over condemnation (Romans 5:16, 17), and of
the Spirit over the flesh (Romans 8:5). And it is
only because of the stark manner of portraying
his misery under sin that Paul can now project,
by comparison, the glory of Spirit-filled chil-
    dren of God.
The Power of the Will in Victory
There are yet two important points to be
made before we leave chapter 7. Both relate to
the manner in which we are able to choose the
path of total victory over the flesh. Obviously,
the will is very much involved in this process.
Few understand the explosive power of this
    decision-making for every individual.
Regardless of the physical frailties or in-
capacities, God has placed within each hu-
man brain the ability to choose one’s course
of action and direction. This independent,
sovereign faculty constitutes the most obvi-
ous difference between people and animals.
No other creature on earth has been given this
power of choice. Monkeys cannot reason ab-
stractly; they move by instinct. Man thinks,
and man chooses. Understanding Romans 7 29
It is very likely that no other inherent
power of mind or body is so deeply rooted as
the power of choice. In bestowing this gift, the
Creator laid upon each person the responsibil-
ity for his own salvation. Even though the fall-
en nature alone has no power to stop sinning,
it does have the power to choose to stop sin-
ning. Even the most vile and degraded of men
may yet decide what actions to pursue.
Often the will has been weakened and trau-
matized by wrong choices and external pres-
sures, but it remains the one human alternative
by which deliverance can be initiated. Here it
must be emphasized that the desire to make
right choices is a result of God’s grace acting
on the mind. Not everyone is willing to give up
the enjoyment of sinful indulgence. This is why
some will need to pray, “Lord, make me willing
to be willing,” or even, “Lord, give me enough
faith to believe that you can increase my faith
    and help my unbelief.”
How true that our greatest enemy is self.
Here within is where the most desperate bat-
tles are fought in the conquest of sin. It is only
when the self surrenders its way and becomes
willing to accept God’s way that we are enabled
to choose right over wrong. The contest over 30 The Flesh and the Spirit
the control of the will lies at the heart of every
    victory and every defeat.
It is not a sin to struggle, nor is it wrong
to be tempted. Conversion does not remove
temptation, but rather makes it possible for the
struggle to culminate in victory. This is why
Jesus warns us, “Watch and pray, lest you enter
into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing,
but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41).
Then there must be a clear perception
that our decisions and initial actions against
sin do not in themselves obtain the victory.
Deliverance is only made possible as divine
power responds to the active choice not to sin.
How often we limit the Lord by refusing to do
what He has given us the power to do ourselves
in overcoming sin. We have a mind, and we
have a will. By choosing not to sin and putting
that decision into action, the way is instantly
opened for God to move against the enemy
    and secure our deliverance.
Is there a struggle, then, in subduing the
flesh and escaping from the authority of sin?
Indeed, there will be continual conflict in re-
sisting the inherited propensities to disobey
God. But the encouraging thing is that none
of these efforts need to end with defeat. God Understanding Romans 7 31
causes us always to triumph as we exercise
the natural weapons of decisive action against
    the enemy.
    Taking a Stand
Paul did not intend for us to linger too
long in the anguished pathways of chapter 7.
It is a necessary place to pass through, but it
is not made for Christian dwelling and living.
After the law has shown us our need for the
cleansing grace of Christ, our relationship with
the law changes. No longer is there the clash
between what must be done and what cannot
    be done.
Although chapter 8 still speaks of the
law—the very same law—the futile struggle to
keep it is finished. The carnal mind, which was
not subject to that law, has now been changed
into a spiritual mind. As children of Adam,
we will possess his fallen nature until we are
translated into glory when Christ returns, but
the converted mind no longer is forced to obey
the dictates of that fallen nature. The power
of the Holy Spirit makes it possible for every
Christian to choose not to sin. By daily dying
to self and sin, the justified believer is enabled
to overpower completely the propensities of 32 The Flesh and the Spirit
his fallen nature and to live a life of total obe-
dience to God. The One who has condemned
sin in the flesh now fulfills in us the just re-
quirements of the law, making obedience not
only possible, but a glorious privilege indeed.
    Thanks be to God!
The word carnival comes from the Latin
word “carne,” which means flesh. In around
a.d. 400, the great Roman Coliseum was often
packed with spectators who had come to view
the violent games. The bloody entertainment
consisted of watching human beings and wild
beasts battle one another to the death. The as-
sembled multitude wildly reveled in such sport
and roared with delight when a person or beast
was brutally slain. This is from where we get
    the world carnival.
But on one day, when the vast Coliseum
crowd was watching a bloody gladiatorial bat-
tle, a Syrian monk, Telemachus, took action.
Deeply grieved and outraged by the utter dis-
regard for human life, he boldly leaped into the
arena in the midst of the butchery and cried
out, “This thing is not right! This thing must
stop!” Because he interfered with the entertain-
ment, the emperor of Rome commanded that
Telemachus be run through with a sword. Thus Understanding Romans 7 33
he died. But through his courage and death, he
kindled a flame in the hearts of thinking per-
sons. History records that his sacrifice caused

against the evil celebration of carnage.
Despite the popular opinions that appeal
to our passions, Christians cannot live for the
flesh and still walk in the Spirit. We must speak
out against sin, even when unpopular.
But the good news is that though we all
travel through the wilderness experience of
Romans 7, we can enter the Promised Land

verses, which depict so beautifully the experi-
ence that God desires every one of His children
    to manifest moment by moment:

for us, who can be against us? How
shall he not freely give us all things?
… Who shall separate us from the

conquerors through him that loved us.
For I am persuaded that neither death,

nor any other creature, shall be able
to separate us from the love of God,
which is in Christ Jesus our Lord”

A Little Light Reading. THE FLESH AND THE SPIRIT. Understanding Romans 7 Joe Crews. (Expanded by Doug batchelor) An oxymoron is a phrase in which words of contradictory meanings are used together for special effect—for example, wise fool or legal murder. Some can be quite humorous, such as pretty ugly, working vacation, or jumbo shrimp. A new phrase used by some Christians also qualifies as an oxymoron: carnal Christians. These two words don’t seem like they are sup- posed to go together. After all, the word carnal means “animal, sensual, unregenerate, fleshly.” Can it really be used as a proper adjective for a born-again Christian, who has turned from the world to the kingdom of God? Still, many sincere people believe carnal is a helpful characterization of the normal By Joe Crews Expanded by Doug Batchelor Understanding Romans 7 4 The Flesh and the Spirit Christian experience. Others, of course, strongly disagree. They say the term is self- contradictory; they deny the existence of a hybrid creature who could be Christ-like and carnal at the same time. At the heart of this complex issue is this question: Is the converted Christian controlled by the Spirit or by the flesh? This controversy is very much rooted in something the Apostle Paul wrote in his epistle to the Romans. Sandwiched right between two of the most triumphant chapters in the Bible, Paul penned 25 verses that have given rise to all the theological conflict on this subject. In order to properly understand those cryptic 25 verses that make up Romans 7, we must briefly examine the companion chapters surrounding it. Though written by the same author, the ideas found in chapters 6 and 8 seem to be at total odds with the one that is between them. A tremendous theme of to- tal victory over sin flows powerfully through Romans 6 and 8, but Romans 7 seems to cata- log only frustration and defeat. How could the same man describe such opposite personal experiences within the same few pages? The question becomes even more significant when Understanding Romans 7 5 we consider that in all his other prolific writ- ings, Paul never repeated such expressions of hopelessness as he recorded in Romans 7. Let’s take a closer look. Sold Under Sin? Can you imagine how these words could ever apply to that spiritual giant who was Paul: “I am carnal, sold under sin … bringing me into captivity to the law of sin. … What I hate, that do I. … O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” (Romans 7:14, 23, 15, 24)? What does this miserable, sin-bound creature have in common with the experi- ence described in the preceding chapter? “We … are dead to sin, … freed from sin. … Let not sin therefore reign. … Sin shall not have dominion over you. … Shall we sin? God forbid … being then made free from sin” (Romans 7:2, 7, 12, 14, 15, 18). And how could Paul himself harmonize this wretched state of Romans 7 with the soar- ing experience of Spirit-filled victory described in Romans 8? “There is therefore now no con- demnation, … made me free from the law of sin … righteousness-fulfilled in us, … mortify 6 The Flesh and the Spirit the deeds of the body. … We are the children of God” (Romans 8:1, 2, 4, 13, 16). The crux of the “carnal Christian” argument is brought into view by Paul’s bold assertion that he is “carnal, sold under sin” (Romans 7:14), yet declaring in chapter 8 that “to be carnally minded is death. The carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be” (Romans 8:6,7). Is Paul really saying that he is not a Christian and is the enemy of God? Is he con- ceding that his life is fleshly and therefore un- der the sentence of death? Of course not! On the other hand, if Paul is describing his experience after his conversion, we must admit that there are irreconcilable differences between chapter 7 and the rest of his writing. Therefore, with an honest look, we are led to the unavoidable conclusion that Paul is not describing his born-again experience at all. We must reject the concept that one can be controlled by the flesh, at enmity with God and condemned to death, and still be in a spiritually saved condition. The wretched man who cries out in despair for deliverance has obviously never been delivered from his sins. Understanding Romans 7 7 Why, then, does Paul portray himself in such a state of hopeless bondage? Although the picture at this point might be a little confusing, we can have assurance that Paul has a very clear and convincing rea- son for writing Romans 7. When we follow the logic of this man, the prince of apostles, we can understand perfectly why he worked in this material exactly as he did, when he did. The Law in Salvation It is important to clearly understand that Romans 7 is given entirely as an explanation of the law and its role in the process of salvation. In the preceding chapter, Paul explains how justification came upon all the world through one man. Most of the material presented in chapters 1 through 5 deal with the theology of righteousness by faith, with the chief focus on justification. Then in Romans 6, Paul moves into the area of sanctification and begins to describe the effect of being saved by grace. This chapter is taken up with a portrayal of perfect obedi- ence and sin-free living. Over and over, Paul asserts that sin (breaking the law) cannot prevail against the power of God’s justifying 8 The Flesh and the Spirit grace. The consistent, habitual pattern of the child of God will be to reject sin. Obedience to the law is the fruit of true justification. But even though holy living and law keeping will mark the lifestyle of every true Christian, Paul doesn’t want anyone to mis- understand the specific role of the law in the process of salvation. Important as it is, the law has its limitations. It cannot cleanse or sanctify. Although it marks out the path of God’s per- fect will, there is no redeeming grace in the law to justify a single person. Its primary function is to convict, condemn, and create a desire for deliverance. Then, like a loving schoolmaster, it will conduct the sinner to Jesus for free cleans- ing and grace. So what does Paul do at this point? He in- serts 25 verses that carefully define the function of the law in leading a person to Christ. And by way of illustration, he uses his own experi- ence with the law to show how it affected him when he fell under its influence. He tells, in ret- rospect, how the law opened his eyes to the real nature of sin within him and “slew” him with its devastating exposé of gross disobedience. It is most important to acknowledge that Romans 7 is Paul’s description of his reactions Understanding Romans 7 9 to the law before he was converted. He is lay- ing out his unconverted heart’s bondage to the carnal nature and his utter helplessness in trying to fulfill the requirements of God’s law. Step by step, he gives a heart-rending account of his anguish under the prodding convictions of the law. Yet many Christians conclude that Paul is really describing his converted Christian ex- perience in Romans 7, comforting themselves with the notion that it is normal—and there- fore acceptable—to be overcome by sin. They express it in this way: “If Paul had no power to do what he knew to be right, surely we cannot be held accountable for disobeying also. After all, it is not us, but sin in us, that is guilty of the wrongdoing. God will not let us be lost as long as we have the desire to do His will, even though we do not ‘perform that which is good.’” Yet if such an interpretation is correct, we are immediately faced with the problem of har- monizing hundreds of other texts in Scripture that assure us that we should live without sin. Can you see what a serious issue this becomes for every one of us? Surely, it must be apparent that such a teaching, if true, would have to be the best 10 The Flesh and the Spirit news in the world for those who are not willing to crucify their fleshly nature completely. With two memorized texts, they could biblically justify any act of disobedience and still feel se- cure: “I am carnal, sold under sin … the evil which I would not, that I do … it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.” On the other hand, if this interpretation is wrong, it is, without question, one of the most dangerous teachings on Satan’s long list of de- ceptions. The horrible import of teaching peo- ple to tolerate that which God hates boggles the mind. If sin really is non-negotiable in His sight and will never enter into His kingdom, then any doctrine that tries to make sin accept- able to God could lead millions to damnation. The Law Did Not Die Because this crucial chapter has been twisted to support such a dangerous doctrine, we need to analyze it carefully verse by verse. Not even the smallest question should linger concerning God’s attitude toward the practice of sin. “Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that Understanding Romans 7 11 the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death. But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter” (Romans 7:1–6). 12 The Flesh and the Spirit Here Paul uses the law of marriage to rep- resent the spiritual relationship with Christ. A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. When he dies, she is free to mar- ry someone else without being branded an adulteress. Likewise, the sinner is represented as being loosed from one relationship in or- der to be bound by another. Many people as- sume that Paul here is doing away with the Ten Commandments. Not so. Paul is actually speaking about the sinner in his experience of turning from sin and becoming married to Christ. The law itself did not die. Paul writes, “Ye also are become dead … that ye should be married to another.” Verse 5 makes it very clear that the sin- ner is bound to his sinful nature. “For when we were in the flesh, the motions [passions] of sin did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.” How did he get released from that fleshly nature that wrought death in him? “Ye … are become dead … by the body of Christ.” In other words, by accepting the atoning death of Jesus, the carnal mind was destroyed, and “being dead wherein we were held,” Paul says we are free to be married to another, even Christ. Understanding Romans 7 13 Some might question why Paul writes that we become “dead to the law” by the death of Jesus. We must understand the context in which this teaching is used. It is obvious from verse 5 that we become dead to what the law condemns in our nature: “the motions of sins, which were by the law.” Here Paul introduces the chief function of the law that he will reit- erate throughout the chapter: The law exposes the works of sin. It brings to light the activities of the flesh. And in doing so, the law ratifies the death sentence against all who are breaking it. To be “dead to the law” and to be “delivered from the law … wherein we were held” means to be delivered from the sins that it condemns and from the penalty of death that applies to all who break the law. Being married to Christ does not deliver us from obeying the law, but it does deliver us from the penalty of death that results from having violated it. What happens next? Because Paul has identified the law as the instrument for point- ing out sin, he now feels it necessary to exoner- ate the law from any charges of being evil itself. “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law 14 The Flesh and the Spirit had said, Thou shalt not covet” (Romans 7:7). Even though its very nature reveals our sin, Paul defends the law throughout the chapter as holy, just, good, and spiritual. Many Christians make the very mistake that Paul strongly warns against. With varying degrees of animosity, they make the law of ab- solutely no effect in the experience of salvation. Not only do they reject its claims as the perfect blueprint of right living, they also deny its as- signed mission to convince of sin. Yet in the most positive language, Paul declares earlier in his epistle that there can be no sin without the law: “For where no law is there, is no transgres- sion” (Romans 4:15). He reinforces that point by recounting his own experience with the Ten Commandments: “I had not known sin, but by the law.” The Law Confronts Paul Here we now find the important transition point in chapter 7; it holds the key to the “car- nal Christian” controversy. For the first time, Paul begins to speak of his own personal rela- tionship to the law. But notice that he carries his readers back with him into the past. He be- gins to write about his first encounter with the Understanding Romans 7 15 law. At that time, Paul says, “I had not known sin.” In other words, he had not been aware of breaking the law before that moment of spiri- tual conviction and enlightenment. As a teacher of the Sanhedrin, there is little doubt that Paul had vast intellectual knowl- edge regarding all the religious laws of Israel, including the Ten Commandments. He prided himself as being flawless in meeting all the le- gal requirements of those statutes. But all that was changed on the day the Holy Spirit opened his eyes to the superficial nature of his obedi- ence. For the first time, he recognized that he was only observing the letter of the law. His empty works of self-justification appeared in their true light. Paul does not tell us, and neither is it nec- essary to know, just when this initial convic- tion began to operate in his life. It is sufficient to say that there was a period of time, whether short or long, when his eyes were opened to what he really should be before God. The law had accomplished its task very well, and he clearly discerned how broad and deep and comprehensive are its principles. In recalling the agony of his soul during those days of conflict, Paul writes: 16 The Flesh and the Spirit “But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful” (Romans 7:8–13). Paul here continues to describe the per- sonal reactions of his pharisaical nature to that initial conviction of sin. It was absolutely shattering for this famous religious teacher to be exposed as a transgressor before God. The experience was so intense that he could only compare it to being happily alive without the Understanding Romans 7 17 law, and then suddenly crushed to death by the consciousness of his guilt—the guilt that was generated by the revelations of the law. Paul marvels that something so righteous and so good and so pure could stir up within him such consciousness of evil. Like a power- ful magnifying lens, the law had probed the re- cesses of his legalistic soul, making sin appear “exceeding sinful.” No Power to Obey Confessing that sin was “working death in me,” Paul launches into the famous verses that have been so terribly misapplied to the experi- ence of beleaguered saints: “For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh), dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform 18 The Flesh and the Spirit that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin” (Romans 7:14–25). Some take the position that Paul’s state- ment here, that the law is spiritual, proves that he was a converted man. Yet the rest of the verse plainly declares that he was carnal and sold out to sin. Is it unusual for a sin- ner to make such an admission about the law? Not at all. At the end of time, millions of Understanding Romans 7 19 unconverted will acknowledge the truth of the Ten Commandments. But believing the truth and consenting to the law is not enough. It must also be obeyed. And Paul knew that. If anybody could appreciate the necessity of doing the works of the law, it would cer- tainly be Paul. And he did try! The rest of the chapter is replete with his frustrated report of trying and failing, trying and failing. Sadly, on the basis of these texts, thousands of sermons have been preached to explain why we should not be too hung up on achieving a life of per- fect obedience. If Paul found it impossible to do good, and constantly did evil instead, why should we get a guilt trip over our failures? Interestingly, the dispensers of these soothing tranquilizers are not really compar- ing apples with apples. Rather, they are com- paring spiritual things with fleshly things. Let’s allow Paul to clear up the matter for us quickly. He writes, “I am carnal.” How does he define the carnal condition? Just 18 verses down the page, he explains: “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Romans 8:6). This is the third time that Paul admits to being under the condemna- tion of death. In Romans 7:10, he says, “The 20 The Flesh and the Spirit commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.” In verse 13, he speaks of sin “working death in me.” Can anyone ac- cuse the great apostle of being confused about the status of the justified believer? No. This is his specialty. He understands very clearly that justification and condemnation could not coex- ist in the same person at the same time. Dozens of times the regenerated Paul declares his free- dom from the guilt and condemnation of the law. Only in this chapter, where he describes his unconverted experience, does he ever place himself back under the death sentence. Convicted But Unconverted Paul’s eyes had been opened. He had been instructed and convicted by the law. He knew what was right and desired to do it, but he had not yet laid hold of the delivering power of Christ. He was miserable. He hated himself and everything he was doing. “But what I hate, that do I” (Romans 7:15). The problem was with his flesh. It was too weak to obey. “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not” (Romans 7:18). Understanding Romans 7 21 Why could Paul not obey in the flesh? Because he uses that expression to repeatedly describe the unconverted nature. In verse 5, he says, “When we were in the flesh, the mo- tions of sins … did work in our members.” In Romans 8:3, he writes that the law could not be kept by us because it was “weak through the flesh” The old carnal power of sin made it impos- sible for him to obey. In Paul’s mind, he was willing, but he describes another law “in my members, warring against the law of my mind.” That other law was stronger than his good de- sires and intentions—indeed, the rest of the sentence reads, “and bringing me into captiv- ity to the law of sin which is in my members” (Romans 7:23). How clear it really is that the law of sin in his members, or in his flesh, was the unregen- erate carnal nature. It made a perfect slave out of his body, compelling him to do evil things that he hated and forcing out of him, finally, that despairing cry, “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” (Romans 7:24). Here again, for the fourth time, Paul indi- cates that the penalty of death was residing in 22 The Flesh and the Spirit his body, or in his flesh, where sin had taken control of him. Many will now point to verse 22 as the fi- nal proof that Paul was converted during this losing battle against sin: “For I delight in the law of God after the inward man.” No one, they say, could delight in the law unless he was born again. But that is not true. In Romans 2:17, 18, Paul addresses the Jews, saying even they have an exalted concept of the law: “Behold, thou are called a Jew, and restest in the law, and mak- est thy boast of God, and knowest his will, and approvest the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law.” Paul’s delight in the law in the inward man merely reveals his total mental acceptance of the law’s principles. He holds the law in the very highest esteem. Prior to his conversion, he had no problem with be- lieving or being willing to obey. Yet without Christ in his life, there was no enabling grace to perform that which is good. Did the apostle ever find the answer to his plaintive cry for help? Did the wretched slave ever obtain freedom? Was he finally loosed from the captivity of the law of sin? Of course he was. Just as soon as he accepted the Lord Jesus, his chains fell off, his carnal nature was Understanding Romans 7 23 crucified, and he was set free from sin. Four verses further, we read how the miracle hap- pened: “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” What a dramatic turnaround! But how has Paul been set free from the very law of sin that had captured him in Romans 7:23? He answers that question himself: “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” This point of conversion in Paul’s experi- ence has been acknowledged in the writings of many well-known Bible commentators. Here are three source statements that con- firm Romans 7 is describing his unregener- ate nature: 1. “It is difficult to conceive how the opinion could have crept into the Church, or prevailed there, that ‘the apostle speaks here of his regener- ate state; and that what was, in such a state, true of himself, must be true of all others in the same state.’ This opinion has, most pitifully and most shamefully, not only lowered the stan- dard of Christianity, but destroyed 24 The Flesh and the Spirit its influence and disgraced its charac- ter” (Adam Clarke’s Commentary on the Bible). 2. “Oh, how many flatter themselves that they have goodness and righteousness, when the true light of God reveals that all their lives they have only lived to please themselves! Their whole con- duct is abhorred of God. How many are alive without the law! In their gross darkness they view themselves with complacency; but let the law of God be revealed to their consciences, as it was to Paul, and they would see that they are sold under sin and must die to the carnal mind. Self must be slain” (Ellen G. White, Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 475). 3. “It is impossible for us, of our selves, to escape from the pit of sin in which we are sunken. Our hearts are evil, and we cannot change them. … ‘The carnal mind is enmity against God.’ The Saviour said, ‘Except a man be born from above, … he cannot see the Understanding Romans 7 25 kingdom of God.’ … It is not enough to perceive the loving-kindness of God, to see the benevolence, the fa- therly tenderness, of His character. … Paul the apostle saw all this when he exclaimed, ‘I consent unto the law that it is good. … The law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.’ But he added, in the bit- terness of his soul-anguish and de- spair, ‘I am carnal, sold under sin’ (Romans 7:16,12,14). He longed for the purity, the righteousness, to which in himself he was powerless to attain, and cried out, ‘O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from this body of death?’ (Romans 7:24). Such is the cry that has gone up from burdened hearts in all lands and in all ages. To all there is but one answer, ‘Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world’ (John 1:29)” (Ellen G. White, Steps to Christ, pp. 18, 19). Serving the Law of Sin At this point, there remains one small per- plexity in the wording of Romans 7:25. Some 26 The Flesh and the Spirit have questioned how Paul could still talk about serving the law of sin in the flesh after appar- ently being delivered from the flesh in the same text. “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.” In spite of the awkward phrasing, there is no contradiction of the main theme. Paul gives a quick, parenthetical answer to his desperate question, “Who shall deliver me?” Then he moves back to complete the point that he was making in verse 23, which is about being in captivity to the law of sin. The very same sentence structure is found in Revelation 20:4, 5. After describing the first resurrection of people who would not receive the mark of the beast, John writes, “But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrec- tion.” As everyone recognizes, the “rest of the dead” are the wicked who arise in the second resurrection, not the first. So the very last sen- tence, about the first resurrection, is actually referring back to those who are described in verse 4—those saints who had not received the mark of the beast. Obviously, the first part of verse 5 is thrown in parenthetically, and the Understanding Romans 7 27 final sentence, “This is the first resurrection,” completes the thought that was being devel- oped in the previous verse. In the same way, the final sentence of Romans 7:25 is referring back to the theme of verse 23 and is not directly related to the first part of verse 25. You see, Paul has just reached the cli- mactic point of logic and pathos in describ- ing his abject condition of condemnation. Verse 23 speaks of his captivity to sin, and verse 24 reveals his agony of desire to be free: “WHO SHALL DELIVER ME FROM THE BODY OF THIS DEATH?” Giving a quick an- swer to his rhetorical question, he encapsulates in one final sentence the basic point he has made throughout the chapter: His mind wills to serve God, but his flesh forces him to serve sin. “(I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord) so then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.” Thus closes chapter 7 with its dismal dirge of defeat, but Paul has not made this detour in his epistle without good reason. Now his read- ers are prepared to appreciate the scope of his transformed experience under grace. It seems to be one of Paul’s penchants to illustrate by 28 The Flesh and the Spirit dramatic contrast the “much more” of grace over sin (Romans 5:20, 21), of justification over condemnation (Romans 5:16, 17), and of the Spirit over the flesh (Romans 8:5). And it is only because of the stark manner of portraying his misery under sin that Paul can now project, by comparison, the glory of Spirit-filled chil- dren of God. The Power of the Will in Victory There are yet two important points to be made before we leave chapter 7. Both relate to the manner in which we are able to choose the path of total victory over the flesh. Obviously, the will is very much involved in this process. Few understand the explosive power of this decision-making for every individual. Regardless of the physical frailties or in- capacities, God has placed within each hu- man brain the ability to choose one’s course of action and direction. This independent, sovereign faculty constitutes the most obvi- ous difference between people and animals. No other creature on earth has been given this power of choice. Monkeys cannot reason ab- stractly; they move by instinct. Man thinks, and man chooses. Understanding Romans 7 29 It is very likely that no other inherent power of mind or body is so deeply rooted as the power of choice. In bestowing this gift, the Creator laid upon each person the responsibil- ity for his own salvation. Even though the fall- en nature alone has no power to stop sinning, it does have the power to choose to stop sin- ning. Even the most vile and degraded of men may yet decide what actions to pursue. Often the will has been weakened and trau- matized by wrong choices and external pres- sures, but it remains the one human alternative by which deliverance can be initiated. Here it must be emphasized that the desire to make right choices is a result of God’s grace acting on the mind. Not everyone is willing to give up the enjoyment of sinful indulgence. This is why some will need to pray, “Lord, make me willing to be willing,” or even, “Lord, give me enough faith to believe that you can increase my faith and help my unbelief.” How true that our greatest enemy is self. Here within is where the most desperate bat- tles are fought in the conquest of sin. It is only when the self surrenders its way and becomes willing to accept God’s way that we are enabled to choose right over wrong. The contest over 30 The Flesh and the Spirit the control of the will lies at the heart of every victory and every defeat. It is not a sin to struggle, nor is it wrong to be tempted. Conversion does not remove temptation, but rather makes it possible for the struggle to culminate in victory. This is why Jesus warns us, “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). Then there must be a clear perception that our decisions and initial actions against sin do not in themselves obtain the victory. Deliverance is only made possible as divine power responds to the active choice not to sin. How often we limit the Lord by refusing to do what He has given us the power to do ourselves in overcoming sin. We have a mind, and we have a will. By choosing not to sin and putting that decision into action, the way is instantly opened for God to move against the enemy and secure our deliverance. Is there a struggle, then, in subduing the flesh and escaping from the authority of sin? Indeed, there will be continual conflict in re- sisting the inherited propensities to disobey God. But the encouraging thing is that none of these efforts need to end with defeat. God Understanding Romans 7 31 causes us always to triumph as we exercise the natural weapons of decisive action against the enemy. Taking a Stand Paul did not intend for us to linger too long in the anguished pathways of chapter 7. It is a necessary place to pass through, but it is not made for Christian dwelling and living. After the law has shown us our need for the cleansing grace of Christ, our relationship with the law changes. No longer is there the clash between what must be done and what cannot be done. Although chapter 8 still speaks of the law—the very same law—the futile struggle to keep it is finished. The carnal mind, which was not subject to that law, has now been changed into a spiritual mind. As children of Adam, we will possess his fallen nature until we are translated into glory when Christ returns, but the converted mind no longer is forced to obey the dictates of that fallen nature. The power of the Holy Spirit makes it possible for every Christian to choose not to sin. By daily dying to self and sin, the justified believer is enabled to overpower completely the propensities of 32 The Flesh and the Spirit his fallen nature and to live a life of total obe- dience to God. The One who has condemned sin in the flesh now fulfills in us the just re- quirements of the law, making obedience not only possible, but a glorious privilege indeed. Thanks be to God! The word carnival comes from the Latin word “carne,” which means flesh. In around a.d. 400, the great Roman Coliseum was often packed with spectators who had come to view the violent games. The bloody entertainment consisted of watching human beings and wild beasts battle one another to the death. The as- sembled multitude wildly reveled in such sport and roared with delight when a person or beast was brutally slain. This is from where we get the world carnival. But on one day, when the vast Coliseum crowd was watching a bloody gladiatorial bat- tle, a Syrian monk, Telemachus, took action. Deeply grieved and outraged by the utter dis- regard for human life, he boldly leaped into the arena in the midst of the butchery and cried out, “This thing is not right! This thing must stop!” Because he interfered with the entertain- ment, the emperor of Rome commanded that Telemachus be run through with a sword. Thus Understanding Romans 7 33 he died. But through his courage and death, he kindled a flame in the hearts of thinking per- sons. History records that his sacrifice caused attendance to decline and soon cease altogeth- er. Why? Because one man dared to speak out against the evil celebration of carnage. Despite the popular opinions that appeal to our passions, Christians cannot live for the flesh and still walk in the Spirit. We must speak out against sin, even when unpopular. But the good news is that though we all travel through the wilderness experience of Romans 7, we can enter the Promised Land of chapter 8. Let your soul feast upon the milk and honey of freedom, victory, and adoption into the family of God. It is the very best place to pitch your tent and remain forever. Paul reserves his choicest words, his most unre- strained language, to portray the joy and se- curity of those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit. Meditate long and often upon these verses, which depict so beautifully the experi- ence that God desires every one of His children to manifest moment by moment: “The Spirit itself beareth witness … that we are the children of God. Heirs 34 The Flesh and the Spirit of God and joint-heirs with Christ. … And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God. … For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son. … If God be for us, who can be against us? How shall he not freely give us all things? … Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? … We are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:16–39).

  • A Little Light Reading.
    Three Unclean Spirit's

    Joe Crews.

The book of Revelation is different
from any other part of the Bible. As a
prophetic history of the church of all the
ages, it is quite largely a book of quotes.
Someone has calculated that out of 404
verses, 276 are either directly quoted or
    paraphrased from the Old Testament
Scriptures. It seems clearly evident that
no one can properly understand this last
book of the inspired canon unless he also
has a close familiarity with the writings
    of Moses and the prophets.
This may account for the vast confu-
sion that exists today over the meaning
of John’s apocalyptic beasts and sym-
    bolic horsemen. The so-called “New
    By Joe Crews
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 1 5/13/10 5:36 PM 2 Three Unclean Spirits
Testament” church bodies that view the
Old Testament as only fulfillments of
an antiquated past would certainly find
no relevance in the writings of John
    the Revelator.
Paul wrote, “… all scripture is giv-
en by inspiration of God, and is profit-
able for doctrine, for reproof, for cor-
    rection, for instruction in righteous-
ness” (2 Timothy 3:16). Since the New
Testament had not yet been written, we
can be certain that he was referring to the
    Old Testament Scriptures. “For whatso-
ever things were written aforetime were
written for our learning,” Paul declared
    in Romans 15:4.
These texts establish that the com-
posite prophecies of Revelation are espe-
cially applicable to our own day and were
    inspired for our “doctrine,” “learning,”
    and “instruction in righteousness.”
Just as the book of Genesis delineates
the beginning of the great controversy
between good and evil, the last book
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 2 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 3
of the Bible describes the close of the
conflict. This makes it one of the most
important books in the sacred Scriptures.
It describes the kind of people God will
take to heaven and how they become
overcomers by the blood of the Lamb. It
warns, also, against the final assaults that
Satan will throw against the saints as the
battle rages to its climax. What a docu-
ment! And how the devil hates this book
that exposes his origin, devices, and
    final destiny!
Can we logically expect Satan to at-
tack these prophecies which lay open his
deceptive plans and purposes? How has
he done it? By introducing futurism, the
adversary has struck a blow at the foun-
    dation of prophetic understanding. The
biblical principle of historicism that es-
tablishes a “day for a year” has been re-
jected, and an unwarranted literalism has
been applied to the great lines of proph-
ecy laid out in Daniel and Revelation.
    Specifically, this type of confused
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 3 5/13/10 5:36 PM 4 Three Unclean Spirits
hermeneutics has been utilized in the
study of Armageddon and the king of the
north. The symbolic portrayal of those
events from the pen of the Revelator pro-
vides a key for correcting the error.
“And the sixth angel poured out his
vial upon the great river Euphrates; and
the water thereof was dried up, that the
way of the kings of the east might be
prepared. And I saw three unclean spir-
its like frogs come out of the mouth of
the dragon, and out of the mouth of the
beast, and out of the mouth of the false
prophet. For they are the spirits of dev-
ils, working miracles, which go forth
unto the kings of the earth and of the
whole world, to gather them to the bat-
tle of that great day of God Almighty.
Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he
that watcheth, and keepeth his garments,
lest he walk naked, and they see his
shame. And he gathered them together
into a place called in the Hebrew tongue
    Armageddon” (Revelation 16:12–16).
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 4 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 5
    Armageddon—A Spiritual Battle
This is probably the key text in the
Bible relating to the great world-end-
ing struggle between Christ and Satan.
Immediately, we can see that many sym-
bols are brought to light in these verses.
The beast, and dragon, and false prophet
are not literal at all. And what can we say
about the clothes described in verse 15?
    Why would this peculiar interruption
take place in the midst of a description of
Armageddon? These clothes are the gar-
ments of salvation and refer directly to
the “fine linen” of that robe of righteous-
    ness described in Revelation 19:8.
From these verses also we notice that
the coming of Jesus “as a thief ’ is related
to the drying up of the river Euphrates
and the appearing of the “kings of the
east.” And even the Battle of Armageddon
is tied to these events. Do these phrases
    sound familiar? They should, because
the same language is used in Isaiah 44:27
to describe the fall of ancient Babylon.
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 5 5/13/10 5:36 PM 6 Three Unclean Spirits
Cyrus actually “dried up” the Euphrates
River and thus delivered the literal Jews
    from Babylonian captivity. After refer-
ring to Cyrus as “the righteous man from
the east” in Isaiah 41:2, Isaiah speaks of
him as one who would “dry up thy riv-
ers” and “open … the two leaved gates”
    (Isaiah 44:27, 28; 45:1).
    Historians recognize these as refer-
ences to the clever battle plan of King
Cyrus to enter the city via the water gates
through the wall, after the water had been
diverted from its channel. Since the river
flowed through the midst of Babylon,
this ruse was a perfect means of access
into the city while the drunken king par-
    tied with his military leaders.
Why is Revelation predicting a future
drying up of Euphrates and an end-time
deliverance of God’s people? Hasn’t this
all been fulfilled in the days of Daniel
the prophet? It has in its primary literal
fulfillment, but John reveals that there
is a secondary, symbolic application of
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 6 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 7
those events. In the historical account,
the literal Jews were freed from the literal
Babylonians, but the book of Revelation
pictures a spiritual Israel being saved
from spiritual Babylon. Both rescues are
made possible through the drying up of
the Euphrates River, and both are accom-
plished by kings of the east.
    Here we encounter an important
    principle of prophetic interpretation. The
immediate fulfillment is always literal and
local, while the future prophetic fulfill-
ment is always spiritual and worldwide.
Thus, God’s people in one instance are
the nation of Israel, and in the later case
are His faithful people of all nations and
races; in other words, two Israels—one
physical in the book of Daniel, and the
other spiritual in the book of Revelation.
Two drying ups—one literally in the past,
and one symbolically in the future.
This leads us to the conclusion that
the battle of Armageddon, as portrayed
in Revelation, is not a literal battle
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 7 5/13/10 5:36 PM 8 Three Unclean Spirits
between East and West, but the spiritual
climax of the 6,000-year conflict between
Christ and Satan. Here the great adver-
sary is symbolized as making a final at-
tack against the people of God to destroy
them. Using a combination of earthly
powers he will influence world govern-
ments to unite in a program to wipe out
those who refuse to receive his mark of
authority. Those who stand loyal to God’s
law in the face of overwhelming opposi-
tion will finally be condemned to death.
This is what Armageddon is all about.
John tells us that water represents
people. “The waters which thou sawest
… are peoples, and multitudes, and na-
    tions, and tongues” (Revelation 17:15).
The harlot woman who sits on the “many
waters” is identified as the apostate reli-
gious system. Drying up of the water rep-
resents the drying up of support by those
multitudes that had been deluded by the
woman and her spiritual daughters. The
Bible declares that they “shall hate the
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 8 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 9
whore, and shall make her desolate …
and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with
    fire” (Revelation 17:16). Unfortunately,
that awakening will come too late to re-
verse the fate of those who will have al-
ready been sealed in apostasy and error.
But who are the “kings of the east” in
Revelation whose coming is preceded by
these dramatic events? Whatever is sym-
bolized here must follow on the heels of
the three unclean spirits gathering the
whole world to the Battle of Armageddon.
Cyrus, king of the east, brought deliver-
ance to Israel in the Old Testament, but
who are the kings of the east in the book
of Revelation who will save spiritual Israel
from the wrath of spiritual Babylon?
    The Scriptures describe only one
rescue operation from the east after that
final gathering of the nations. “For as
the lightening cometh out of the east,
and shineth even unto the west; so shall
also the coming of the Son of man be”
(Matthew 24:27). It is from that same
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 9 5/13/10 5:36 PM 10 Three Unclean Spirits
direction that the sealing angel ascends
to mark the saints for their deliverance.
“And I saw another angel ascending from
the east, having the seal of the living
    God” (Revelation 7:2).
    The prophet Ezekiel identifies the
east as God’s special place of abode and
operation. “And, behold, the glory of the
God of Israel came from the way of the
east” (Ezekiel 43:2). These verses leave
no doubt that the kings of the east sym-
bolize the glorious intervention of Jesus
and the armies of heaven in dealing with
the warring factions of this earth. We
note once more the inspired account of
the opposing forces that will clash in this
last encounter between good and evil.
Revelation 16:12 speaks of the “kings
of the east” and verse 14 describes the
other side as “the kings of the earth.”
What a contest! The great controversy
reaches its final stages in this cosmic
involvement of every soul who lives on
    planet earth.
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 10 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 11
What circumstances lead up to the
gathering of all nations to this apocalyp-
tic Armageddon? John gives a graphic
account of it: “And I saw three unclean
spirits like frogs come out of the mouth
of the dragon, and out of the mouth of
the beast, and out of the mouth of the
false prophet. For they are the spirits
of devils, working miracles, which go
forth unto the kings of the earth and of
the whole world, to gather them to the
battle of that great day of God Almighty.
… And he gathered them together into
a place called in the Hebrew tongue
    Armageddon” (Revelation 16:13–16).
    Three Spirits Like Frogs
Now we are prepared to identify the
three major actors who will set the
stage for this end-time holocaust. Time
does not allow us to give the prophetic
and historical background on each of the
    miracle-working trio who influence the
earthly rulers to war against God. Suffice
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 11 5/13/10 5:36 PM 12 Three Unclean Spirits
it to say that all three—the beast, drag-
on, and false prophet—are portrayed as
being used by demonic power in their
gathering of nations to the battle of
    Armageddon.
From the days of Martin Luther to
    the present, Bible commentators have
recognized the papacy as the fulfillment
of the score of biblical tests relating to the
beast power. It was to rise among the na-
tions of Western Europe, uprooting three
    tribes, speaking blasphemy, persecuting
all opponents, ruling for 1,260 years, and
    finally receiving a deadly wound.
Only the papal system fulfills all of
    those characteristics so clearly delin-
eated in both Daniel and Revelation.
The deadly wound was given in 1798,
at the end of an exact political reign
of 1,260 years, and the pope was taken
    prisoner by French Revolutionary forc-
    es dispatched by Napoleon Bonaparte.
This makes it clear that the modern pa-
pacy will indeed be one of the powerful
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 12 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 13
catalysts that will bring on the ultimate
threat against the remnant of the seed of
    the woman (Revelation 12:17).
The second force in the preparation
for Armageddon will be the dragon.
This is the symbol of satanic power in its
    most virulent and confrontational form.
Certainly this would include every as-
pect of pagan worship, but specifically, it
would also relate to the more respected
    elements of occultism, Spiritualism, and
New Age, which have been adopted by
    many Christians today.
None can deny that churches of
    various persuasions have embraced the
doctrine of the natural immortality of
the soul, the very root and foundation
of all attempts to communicate with
the dead. Such a belief opens the door
for almost every form of modern New
    Age deception, including Spiritualism
and the mind sciences. Thus, a strong
sympathetic chain has been forged be-
    tween Christianity and paganism. Such
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 13 5/13/10 5:36 PM 14 Three Unclean Spirits
a federation will be one of the major
influences in stirring up the kings of
the earth to battle against the remnant
of the woman, and finally, against the
armies of heaven. “And the dragon was
wroth with the woman, and went to
make war with the remnant of her seed,
which keep the commandments of God,
and have the testimony of Jesus Christ”
    (Revelation 12:17).
The third symbolic power that will
prepare the world for the battle of that
great day is described as the false prophet.
He, like the others, causes miracles to be
performed in order to effect a gathering
of the nations to that last battle between
Christ and Satan. Who is this false proph-
et? We find a clue in Revelation 19 that
describes the disastrous outcome of the
battle for the enemies of Christ. “And the
beast was taken, and with him the false
prophet that wrought miracles before him,
with which he deceived them that had re-
ceived the mark of the beast” (v. 20).
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 14 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 15
This text describes how the false
prophet works miracles in relation to
those who receive the mark of the beast.
Does the Bible identify the one who car-
ries out these counterfeit miracles? In
Revelation 13 we read, “And I beheld an-
    other beast coming up out of the earth;
and he had two horns like a lamb, and
he spake as a dragon. … And he doeth
great wonders, so that he maketh fire
come down from heaven on the earth
in the sight of men, And deceiveth them
that dwell on the earth by means of those
miracles which he had power to do in
the sight of the beast. … And he causeth
all, both small and great, … to receive a
mark in their right hand, or in their fore-
    heads” (vs. 11–16).
    By putting these verses together
we discover that the second beast of
Revelation 13 is the false prophet who
also works miracles and causes all to re-
ceive the mark. Even the nature of the
miracles is detailed by John: “he maketh
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 15 5/13/10 5:36 PM 16 Three Unclean Spirits
fire come down from heaven on the earth
in the sight of men” (v. 13). The descrip-
tion of this second beast establishes be-
yond question that the prophet is talk-
ing about Protestant America in its rise
to world dominance. Note the signifi-
cant reference to “coming up” as the first
beast received its deadly wound. Was the
United States rising to power in the very
year the papacy went down? Indeed, in
1798 America was first recognized as
a world power—the very year of the
    papal wound.
Contrary to the first beast rising out
of the water, representing many peo-
ple, the two-horned second beast came
up out of the earth, signifying a place
of no former civilization and peoples
    (Revelation 13:11).
The absence of crowns on its two
horns also indicates a peaceful democ-
racy in contrast to the crowns on the
horns of the first beast that symbolized
monarchies or dictatorships. It is also
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 16 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 17
interesting to note, in passing, that the
miracles had to do with bringing fire
from heaven. John added that the work
of the false prophet was like frogs, going
    forth to deceive.
Frogs capture their prey with their
tongues, and the false prophet bring-
ing fire down from heaven sounds
very much like a counterfeit Pentecost.
These symbols may well indicate how
    pseudo-Christian concepts will form
a link between paganism and apostate
    Protestantism. The false prophet, instead
of representing the United States as a po-
litical entity only, would extend to the
“image of the beast” and portray fallen,
    compromised Protestantism doing the
work of the first beast, or Catholicism.
    Church and State Unite
There is no question but that Satan
has woven an age-long network pat-
tern of pagan infiltration in both govern-
ment and religion. It has been done so
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 17 5/13/10 5:36 PM 18 Three Unclean Spirits
cleverly, over the ages, that few recognize
how much common ground now exists
    in these powerful institutions. Sunday,
the ancient day of licentious sun wor-
ship for every heathen culture, has been
so artfully sanitized that it is now the ac-
cepted substitute for the biblical seventh-
day Sabbath in both secular and reli-
gious settings. Incredibly, this has been
    accomplished while both church and
state still give recognition to the moral
nature of the Ten Commandments that
    declare unequivocally that “the seventh
day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God”
    (Exodus 20:10).
Consider the ease with which gov-
ernment can now lend support to a rest
day which they themselves recognize by
closing up all official functions of their
    own operation on Sunday. Repeatedly,
laws have been instituted and enforced to
make it a crime to violate the supposed
sanctity of a day dedicated originally to
satanic sun worship. Amazing? Indeed, it
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 18 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 19
is the most incredible religious fraud of
the ages and one that only the prince of
    evil could have perpetrated.
Then, we must marvel again at the
respectable status accorded to the New
Age movement whose tentacles have ex-
    tended equally through both religious
    and non-religious communities. Finally,
the devil has been able to effect a revival
of his most primitive approach to the
human race. Through a variety of mod-
    ern titles and high-sounding techniques,
Satan is channeling his evil principles
directly into the minds of millions today
who cannot recognize that they are actu-
ally learning to worship Satan. All who
subscribe to the pagan concept of a natu-
rally immortal soul are vulnerable to the
New Age appeal to communicate with
    these supposed “Spirit Masters.”
    Charismatic worshippers who have
been conditioned by emotional and sen-
sory manifestations stand in the great-
est danger of being deceived by the New
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 19 5/13/10 5:36 PM 20 Three Unclean Spirits
Age and Spiritualism appeal. Those who
trust feeling as a valid test of true reli-
gion do not easily discern counterfeit
gifts. Prophecy indicates that a counter-
feit “tongues” could be one aspect of the
three-fold preparation for the final de-
    ception.
Coming back to the words of the
prophet, we now see the tri-lateral ap-
proach that Satan will make to the kings
of the earth to prepare them for their
part in Armageddon. Every effort will
be made by our great enemy to unite
secular and religious powers to de-
stroy the little remnant people which
“keep the commandments of God and
have the testimony of Jesus Christ”
    (Revelation 12:17).
    Satan’s wrath is especially aimed
against the law of God. He hates it be-
cause it constitutes the foundation of
God’s government. He despises the saints
who are repeatedly described in the book
of Revelation as those who “keep the
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 20 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 21
    commandments of God” (Revelation
    14:12; 12:17; 22:14).
Thus far we have discovered that the
    common ground of Spiritualism (im-
    mortal soul), counterfeit tongues, and
New Age errors will cement an end-time
    alliance between apostate Protestantism,
    Catholicism, and secular governments—
an alliance which will unite them against
    the unpopular minority who refuse
the mark of the beast. Under the influ-
ence of this confederation the nations of
the earth, following the example of the
United States, will be led to issue a death
decree against all who will not receive
    that mark.
    Counterfeit Miracles and
    the Kings of the Earth
    I
t is interesting, at this point, to ob-
serve how this grand objective of
unified action will be accomplished by
these diverse political and religious en-
tities. Some have held that they will be
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 21 5/13/10 5:36 PM 22 Three Unclean Spirits
    drawn together by economic necessity,
as related world finances experience si-
    multaneous collapse. Without discount-
ing this and other possible factors, we
must recognize that the prophecy itself
plainly bears witness to the primary role
of demonic miracles as the basic bond-
ing force pulling the nations together for
the final action against God’s people and
His government. In other words, it seems
less political than it does spiritual from
    the biblical viewpoint.
Right now we can only speculate
about the nature of those signs and
wonders that Satan will use to impress
the kings of the earth. With the rising
influence of Spiritualism in many reli-
gious bodies and the growing emphasis
on miracles and emotional feeling as
the criteria of truth, we can expect some
grandiose display of demonic power that
will capture the attention and interest of
every country in the world. We know
that the great deceiver will impersonate
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 22 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 23
the coming of Jesus in some spectacular
manner, and no one should doubt that
    such miraculous displays could make
    intellectual believers and cooperators
    out of Moslems, Hindus, Buddhists,
Communists, or any other strain of na-
    tional or religious identity.
    And don’t discount the providen-
tial influences that will be operating on
    the other side—God’s side—to prepare
for the final events of the great contro-
versy. Even though Satan is the tempo-
rary prince of this world, God still has
oversight of the rise and fall of nations.
A divine destiny is even now influenc-
ing the political processes and pressures
in which certain relationships are being
    established between countries.
    The most atheistic observers have
counted the rapid fall of international
    communism as an incredible develop-
ment very close to a miracle. And almost
everyone describes the lightning victory of
the allied forces over Saddam Hussein as
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 23 5/13/10 5:36 PM 24 Three Unclean Spirits
    an unbelievable, impossible accomplish-
ment. How could such a war be fought
with so few casualties on one side? Yet in
each of these recent cataclysmic actions—
the fall of communism and the United
States victory over Iraq—the results have
been to place America in a center-stage
position of influence over all the other na-
tions. This is exactly what is demanded by
the prophecy of Revelation 13. This coun-
try will “deceive them that dwell on the
earth … And he causeth all, both small
and great, rich and poor, free and bond,
to receive a mark in their right hand, or
    in their foreheads” (Revelation 13:14–16).
Another shocking activity of the sec-
ond beast of Revelation 13 apparently is
produced after it loses its lamblike qual-
ity and begins to speak as a dragon. John
wrote, “And he exerciseth all the power
of the first beast before him, and causeth
the earth and them which dwell therein
to worship the first beast, whose deadly
    wound was healed” (Revelation 13:12).
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 24 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 25
As we have already discovered, the
deadly wound was given to the papacy in
1798, and it has been in the process of
healing since 1929 when the Vatican was
established as a political state once again.
According to this prophecy, the United
States will begin to exercise a similar reli-
gious intolerance as the Catholic Church
and will use her influence to cause peo-
ple allover the world to give spiritual al-
    legiance to that church.
    If this scenario seemed far-fetched
and unlikely at some time in the past, it
certainly is not that way today. The grow-
ing political influence of Pope John Paul II
in world affairs is a phenomenon of the
very recent past. The United States has
    appointed an official representative to
the head of that church state, and some
amazing concessions have been made to
accommodate the pope in his pilgrimage
visits to this and other countries.
    A very significant statement ap-
peared in the August 13, 1990, issue of
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 25 5/13/10 5:36 PM 26 Three Unclean Spirits
U.S. News and World Report magazine.
“Pope John Paul II discusses world af-
fairs on the telephone with George Bush
and Mikhail Gorbachev at least once a
    week, according to Professor Malachi
    Martin, a Roman Catholic theologian
and Vatican insider. … Martin says
the Pope offers the President informed
analyses prepared by the Vatican’s intel-
    ligence network about developments in
Eastern Europe and his personal assess-
ments of the new leaders there as well as
    in the Soviet Union.”
    Such an unseemly alliance between
papal churchmen and the heads of na-
tions is certainly a violation of the tra-
    ditional American concept of separa-
tion of church and state. But it fits in
perfectly with the prophetic scenario of
final events. Many students of proph-
ecy found it difficult to believe that
Catholicism could ever regain her pow-
erful political clout after the “deadly
    wound” experience of the eighteenth
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 26 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 27
century. It was felt that Communist
    totalitarianism would always be around
to limit the expansionistic aims of the pa-
pacy. The two giant opposing forces were
perceived as a necessary balance against
each other so that neither could gain
    authoritarian superiority.
Now all that has changed. It is gen-
erally recognized that the Pope played a
significant role in the collapse of interna-
tional communism. The recent book The
Keys of This Blood, written just before the
iron curtain began its rapid dissolution,
    describes the obsessive determination
of the present Pope to bring the entire
world order under the spiritual domina-
tion of the so-called Holy See of Rome.
    The author describes the concentrated
focus of the papal attack on the com-
munistic system, long recognized as the
greatest obstacle to the Church’s goal.
If time allowed, we could study the
prophecy of Daniel 11 where the pre-
cise victory of the king of the North
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 27 5/13/10 5:36 PM 28 Three Unclean Spirits
(Catholicism) over the king of the South
    (Atheistic communism) is clearly pre-
dicted. For three tense, dramatic days in
August 1991, the world held its breath as
the Russian coup appeared to reverse the
prophetic agenda for the little time re-
maining. Now, the road seems to be wide
open for the Catholic power to fulfill its
particular role, along with the dragon
    and the false prophet.
Beginning with verse 40, we read
the account of a mighty struggle tak-
ing place at the time of the end between
these two contending forces. The iden-
tity of these symbolic kings can be es-
tablished by comparing a few texts. In
Isaiah 30:6, 7 the land of Egypt is identified
as “of the south.” John the Revelator re-
fers to France’s period of atheism around
1798 as that “which spiritually is called
    Sodom and Egypt” (Revelation 11:8).
Thus, we find the land of the Pharaohs
connected to atheism. Indeed, it was the
king of Egypt who made the proud boast,
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 28 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 29
“Who is the Lord, that I should obey his
    voice?” (Exodus 5:2).
    As Daniel describes the continuing
conflict between the king of the north
and king of the south, we are made aware
that his symbol of Egypt has come to rep-
resent not just the arrogant spirit of that
large country south of Israel but last-day
atheism in whatever form it is manifest.
Communism is the virulent form that
atheism has assumed for the past many
years, and much of Daniel 11 is describing
the life and death clash of communism
with its great foe, the king of the north.
But who is this antagonist from the
north who finally gains the ascendancy
over the powers of atheism? Here are some
texts that show beyond question that the
primary application of this symbol was to
Babylon. “Toward the north by the river
Euphrates,” “in the north country by the
river Euphrates,” “all the families of the
north … and Nebuchadnezzar the king
    of Babylon” (Jeremiah 46:6; 46:10; 25:9).
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 29 5/13/10 5:36 PM 30 Three Unclean Spirits
The literal city of Babylon was built
right over the Euphrates River, but there
    is another future, spiritual applica-
tion of Babylon revealed in the book of
Revelation. The very last part of Daniel
11 also deals with the symbolic king of
the north, or spiritual Babylon. Many
phrases in this chapter give positive evi-
dence that this power is the papacy. For
instance: it shall “pollute the sanctuary,”
“take away the daily sacrifice,” “magnify
himself above all,” and “corrupt with flat-
    teries” (Daniel 11:31, 32).
Now consider the high drama of this
prediction in Daniel 11:40. “And at the
time of the end shall the king of the south
push at him: and the king of the north
shall come against him like a whirlwind,
… and he shall enter into the countries,
and shall overflow and pass over.”
How significant it is that Newsweek
magazine on December 25, 1989, trum-
peted the news of the fall of communism
in these words, “Days of the Whirlwind.”
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 30 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 31
    Commentary after commentary gave
credit to the Pope for bringing down
Gorbachev and the iron grip of atheism
on Eastern Europe. The prophecy said it
would be “like a whirlwind” and that is
exactly how the media reported it.
Bible students have long debated how
the whole world could be influenced to
wonder after the beast, and also how the
kings of the earth could be drawn into
that final encounter between good and
evil. Now we can see how the greatest
barrier has been removed, and the three
unclean spirits are working through the
beast, dragon, and false prophet to in-
volve every soul in that “battle of the
    great day of God.”
What an age to be alive! Excitement
mounts as we ride the crest of towering
events that sweep us toward the grand cli-
max of history—the coming of Jesus. We
need to be constantly aware of the fast-
breaking signs that point to His return,
but our preparation for that moment
    ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 31 5/13/10 5:36 PM 32 Three Unclean Spirits
in time involves more than knowledge.
Only the pure in heart will see God and
live in His presence. A total commitment
of heart, mind, and body is the greatest
    need of every living soul.
While the angels of Revelation hold
the four winds of strife from blowing on
the earth, and the glory of God gathers
in the eastern skies, a final invitation is
beginning to confront every man, wom-
an, and child on this crumbling planet.
“Come out of her, my people” is the call
of the hour. God is gathering His faith-
ful ones, who love Him supremely, to
Mount Zion, the place of safety and
salvation. The three unclean spirits are
gathering the forces of apostate religion
    and compromising governments to the
great day of battle. Today we stand in the valley of decision.
A Little Light Reading. Three Unclean Spirit's Joe Crews. The book of Revelation is different from any other part of the Bible. As a prophetic history of the church of all the ages, it is quite largely a book of quotes. Someone has calculated that out of 404 verses, 276 are either directly quoted or paraphrased from the Old Testament Scriptures. It seems clearly evident that no one can properly understand this last book of the inspired canon unless he also has a close familiarity with the writings of Moses and the prophets. This may account for the vast confu- sion that exists today over the meaning of John’s apocalyptic beasts and sym- bolic horsemen. The so-called “New By Joe Crews ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 1 5/13/10 5:36 PM 2 Three Unclean Spirits Testament” church bodies that view the Old Testament as only fulfillments of an antiquated past would certainly find no relevance in the writings of John the Revelator. Paul wrote, “… all scripture is giv- en by inspiration of God, and is profit- able for doctrine, for reproof, for cor- rection, for instruction in righteous- ness” (2 Timothy 3:16). Since the New Testament had not yet been written, we can be certain that he was referring to the Old Testament Scriptures. “For whatso- ever things were written aforetime were written for our learning,” Paul declared in Romans 15:4. These texts establish that the com- posite prophecies of Revelation are espe- cially applicable to our own day and were inspired for our “doctrine,” “learning,” and “instruction in righteousness.” Just as the book of Genesis delineates the beginning of the great controversy between good and evil, the last book ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 2 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 3 of the Bible describes the close of the conflict. This makes it one of the most important books in the sacred Scriptures. It describes the kind of people God will take to heaven and how they become overcomers by the blood of the Lamb. It warns, also, against the final assaults that Satan will throw against the saints as the battle rages to its climax. What a docu- ment! And how the devil hates this book that exposes his origin, devices, and final destiny! Can we logically expect Satan to at- tack these prophecies which lay open his deceptive plans and purposes? How has he done it? By introducing futurism, the adversary has struck a blow at the foun- dation of prophetic understanding. The biblical principle of historicism that es- tablishes a “day for a year” has been re- jected, and an unwarranted literalism has been applied to the great lines of proph- ecy laid out in Daniel and Revelation. Specifically, this type of confused ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 3 5/13/10 5:36 PM 4 Three Unclean Spirits hermeneutics has been utilized in the study of Armageddon and the king of the north. The symbolic portrayal of those events from the pen of the Revelator pro- vides a key for correcting the error. “And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. And I saw three unclean spir- its like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of dev- ils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the bat- tle of that great day of God Almighty. Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon” (Revelation 16:12–16). ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 4 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 5 Armageddon—A Spiritual Battle This is probably the key text in the Bible relating to the great world-end- ing struggle between Christ and Satan. Immediately, we can see that many sym- bols are brought to light in these verses. The beast, and dragon, and false prophet are not literal at all. And what can we say about the clothes described in verse 15? Why would this peculiar interruption take place in the midst of a description of Armageddon? These clothes are the gar- ments of salvation and refer directly to the “fine linen” of that robe of righteous- ness described in Revelation 19:8. From these verses also we notice that the coming of Jesus “as a thief ’ is related to the drying up of the river Euphrates and the appearing of the “kings of the east.” And even the Battle of Armageddon is tied to these events. Do these phrases sound familiar? They should, because the same language is used in Isaiah 44:27 to describe the fall of ancient Babylon. ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 5 5/13/10 5:36 PM 6 Three Unclean Spirits Cyrus actually “dried up” the Euphrates River and thus delivered the literal Jews from Babylonian captivity. After refer- ring to Cyrus as “the righteous man from the east” in Isaiah 41:2, Isaiah speaks of him as one who would “dry up thy riv- ers” and “open … the two leaved gates” (Isaiah 44:27, 28; 45:1). Historians recognize these as refer- ences to the clever battle plan of King Cyrus to enter the city via the water gates through the wall, after the water had been diverted from its channel. Since the river flowed through the midst of Babylon, this ruse was a perfect means of access into the city while the drunken king par- tied with his military leaders. Why is Revelation predicting a future drying up of Euphrates and an end-time deliverance of God’s people? Hasn’t this all been fulfilled in the days of Daniel the prophet? It has in its primary literal fulfillment, but John reveals that there is a secondary, symbolic application of ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 6 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 7 those events. In the historical account, the literal Jews were freed from the literal Babylonians, but the book of Revelation pictures a spiritual Israel being saved from spiritual Babylon. Both rescues are made possible through the drying up of the Euphrates River, and both are accom- plished by kings of the east. Here we encounter an important principle of prophetic interpretation. The immediate fulfillment is always literal and local, while the future prophetic fulfill- ment is always spiritual and worldwide. Thus, God’s people in one instance are the nation of Israel, and in the later case are His faithful people of all nations and races; in other words, two Israels—one physical in the book of Daniel, and the other spiritual in the book of Revelation. Two drying ups—one literally in the past, and one symbolically in the future. This leads us to the conclusion that the battle of Armageddon, as portrayed in Revelation, is not a literal battle ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 7 5/13/10 5:36 PM 8 Three Unclean Spirits between East and West, but the spiritual climax of the 6,000-year conflict between Christ and Satan. Here the great adver- sary is symbolized as making a final at- tack against the people of God to destroy them. Using a combination of earthly powers he will influence world govern- ments to unite in a program to wipe out those who refuse to receive his mark of authority. Those who stand loyal to God’s law in the face of overwhelming opposi- tion will finally be condemned to death. This is what Armageddon is all about. John tells us that water represents people. “The waters which thou sawest … are peoples, and multitudes, and na- tions, and tongues” (Revelation 17:15). The harlot woman who sits on the “many waters” is identified as the apostate reli- gious system. Drying up of the water rep- resents the drying up of support by those multitudes that had been deluded by the woman and her spiritual daughters. The Bible declares that they “shall hate the ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 8 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 9 whore, and shall make her desolate … and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire” (Revelation 17:16). Unfortunately, that awakening will come too late to re- verse the fate of those who will have al- ready been sealed in apostasy and error. But who are the “kings of the east” in Revelation whose coming is preceded by these dramatic events? Whatever is sym- bolized here must follow on the heels of the three unclean spirits gathering the whole world to the Battle of Armageddon. Cyrus, king of the east, brought deliver- ance to Israel in the Old Testament, but who are the kings of the east in the book of Revelation who will save spiritual Israel from the wrath of spiritual Babylon? The Scriptures describe only one rescue operation from the east after that final gathering of the nations. “For as the lightening cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” (Matthew 24:27). It is from that same ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 9 5/13/10 5:36 PM 10 Three Unclean Spirits direction that the sealing angel ascends to mark the saints for their deliverance. “And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God” (Revelation 7:2). The prophet Ezekiel identifies the east as God’s special place of abode and operation. “And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east” (Ezekiel 43:2). These verses leave no doubt that the kings of the east sym- bolize the glorious intervention of Jesus and the armies of heaven in dealing with the warring factions of this earth. We note once more the inspired account of the opposing forces that will clash in this last encounter between good and evil. Revelation 16:12 speaks of the “kings of the east” and verse 14 describes the other side as “the kings of the earth.” What a contest! The great controversy reaches its final stages in this cosmic involvement of every soul who lives on planet earth. ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 10 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 11 What circumstances lead up to the gathering of all nations to this apocalyp- tic Armageddon? John gives a graphic account of it: “And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. … And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon” (Revelation 16:13–16). Three Spirits Like Frogs Now we are prepared to identify the three major actors who will set the stage for this end-time holocaust. Time does not allow us to give the prophetic and historical background on each of the miracle-working trio who influence the earthly rulers to war against God. Suffice ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 11 5/13/10 5:36 PM 12 Three Unclean Spirits it to say that all three—the beast, drag- on, and false prophet—are portrayed as being used by demonic power in their gathering of nations to the battle of Armageddon. From the days of Martin Luther to the present, Bible commentators have recognized the papacy as the fulfillment of the score of biblical tests relating to the beast power. It was to rise among the na- tions of Western Europe, uprooting three tribes, speaking blasphemy, persecuting all opponents, ruling for 1,260 years, and finally receiving a deadly wound. Only the papal system fulfills all of those characteristics so clearly delin- eated in both Daniel and Revelation. The deadly wound was given in 1798, at the end of an exact political reign of 1,260 years, and the pope was taken prisoner by French Revolutionary forc- es dispatched by Napoleon Bonaparte. This makes it clear that the modern pa- pacy will indeed be one of the powerful ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 12 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 13 catalysts that will bring on the ultimate threat against the remnant of the seed of the woman (Revelation 12:17). The second force in the preparation for Armageddon will be the dragon. This is the symbol of satanic power in its most virulent and confrontational form. Certainly this would include every as- pect of pagan worship, but specifically, it would also relate to the more respected elements of occultism, Spiritualism, and New Age, which have been adopted by many Christians today. None can deny that churches of various persuasions have embraced the doctrine of the natural immortality of the soul, the very root and foundation of all attempts to communicate with the dead. Such a belief opens the door for almost every form of modern New Age deception, including Spiritualism and the mind sciences. Thus, a strong sympathetic chain has been forged be- tween Christianity and paganism. Such ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 13 5/13/10 5:36 PM 14 Three Unclean Spirits a federation will be one of the major influences in stirring up the kings of the earth to battle against the remnant of the woman, and finally, against the armies of heaven. “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 12:17). The third symbolic power that will prepare the world for the battle of that great day is described as the false prophet. He, like the others, causes miracles to be performed in order to effect a gathering of the nations to that last battle between Christ and Satan. Who is this false proph- et? We find a clue in Revelation 19 that describes the disastrous outcome of the battle for the enemies of Christ. “And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had re- ceived the mark of the beast” (v. 20). ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 14 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 15 This text describes how the false prophet works miracles in relation to those who receive the mark of the beast. Does the Bible identify the one who car- ries out these counterfeit miracles? In Revelation 13 we read, “And I beheld an- other beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. … And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast. … And he causeth all, both small and great, … to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their fore- heads” (vs. 11–16). By putting these verses together we discover that the second beast of Revelation 13 is the false prophet who also works miracles and causes all to re- ceive the mark. Even the nature of the miracles is detailed by John: “he maketh ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 15 5/13/10 5:36 PM 16 Three Unclean Spirits fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men” (v. 13). The descrip- tion of this second beast establishes be- yond question that the prophet is talk- ing about Protestant America in its rise to world dominance. Note the signifi- cant reference to “coming up” as the first beast received its deadly wound. Was the United States rising to power in the very year the papacy went down? Indeed, in 1798 America was first recognized as a world power—the very year of the papal wound. Contrary to the first beast rising out of the water, representing many peo- ple, the two-horned second beast came up out of the earth, signifying a place of no former civilization and peoples (Revelation 13:11). The absence of crowns on its two horns also indicates a peaceful democ- racy in contrast to the crowns on the horns of the first beast that symbolized monarchies or dictatorships. It is also ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 16 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 17 interesting to note, in passing, that the miracles had to do with bringing fire from heaven. John added that the work of the false prophet was like frogs, going forth to deceive. Frogs capture their prey with their tongues, and the false prophet bring- ing fire down from heaven sounds very much like a counterfeit Pentecost. These symbols may well indicate how pseudo-Christian concepts will form a link between paganism and apostate Protestantism. The false prophet, instead of representing the United States as a po- litical entity only, would extend to the “image of the beast” and portray fallen, compromised Protestantism doing the work of the first beast, or Catholicism. Church and State Unite There is no question but that Satan has woven an age-long network pat- tern of pagan infiltration in both govern- ment and religion. It has been done so ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 17 5/13/10 5:36 PM 18 Three Unclean Spirits cleverly, over the ages, that few recognize how much common ground now exists in these powerful institutions. Sunday, the ancient day of licentious sun wor- ship for every heathen culture, has been so artfully sanitized that it is now the ac- cepted substitute for the biblical seventh- day Sabbath in both secular and reli- gious settings. Incredibly, this has been accomplished while both church and state still give recognition to the moral nature of the Ten Commandments that declare unequivocally that “the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God” (Exodus 20:10). Consider the ease with which gov- ernment can now lend support to a rest day which they themselves recognize by closing up all official functions of their own operation on Sunday. Repeatedly, laws have been instituted and enforced to make it a crime to violate the supposed sanctity of a day dedicated originally to satanic sun worship. Amazing? Indeed, it ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 18 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 19 is the most incredible religious fraud of the ages and one that only the prince of evil could have perpetrated. Then, we must marvel again at the respectable status accorded to the New Age movement whose tentacles have ex- tended equally through both religious and non-religious communities. Finally, the devil has been able to effect a revival of his most primitive approach to the human race. Through a variety of mod- ern titles and high-sounding techniques, Satan is channeling his evil principles directly into the minds of millions today who cannot recognize that they are actu- ally learning to worship Satan. All who subscribe to the pagan concept of a natu- rally immortal soul are vulnerable to the New Age appeal to communicate with these supposed “Spirit Masters.” Charismatic worshippers who have been conditioned by emotional and sen- sory manifestations stand in the great- est danger of being deceived by the New ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 19 5/13/10 5:36 PM 20 Three Unclean Spirits Age and Spiritualism appeal. Those who trust feeling as a valid test of true reli- gion do not easily discern counterfeit gifts. Prophecy indicates that a counter- feit “tongues” could be one aspect of the three-fold preparation for the final de- ception. Coming back to the words of the prophet, we now see the tri-lateral ap- proach that Satan will make to the kings of the earth to prepare them for their part in Armageddon. Every effort will be made by our great enemy to unite secular and religious powers to de- stroy the little remnant people which “keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 12:17). Satan’s wrath is especially aimed against the law of God. He hates it be- cause it constitutes the foundation of God’s government. He despises the saints who are repeatedly described in the book of Revelation as those who “keep the ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 20 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 21 commandments of God” (Revelation 14:12; 12:17; 22:14). Thus far we have discovered that the common ground of Spiritualism (im- mortal soul), counterfeit tongues, and New Age errors will cement an end-time alliance between apostate Protestantism, Catholicism, and secular governments— an alliance which will unite them against the unpopular minority who refuse the mark of the beast. Under the influ- ence of this confederation the nations of the earth, following the example of the United States, will be led to issue a death decree against all who will not receive that mark. Counterfeit Miracles and the Kings of the Earth I t is interesting, at this point, to ob- serve how this grand objective of unified action will be accomplished by these diverse political and religious en- tities. Some have held that they will be ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 21 5/13/10 5:36 PM 22 Three Unclean Spirits drawn together by economic necessity, as related world finances experience si- multaneous collapse. Without discount- ing this and other possible factors, we must recognize that the prophecy itself plainly bears witness to the primary role of demonic miracles as the basic bond- ing force pulling the nations together for the final action against God’s people and His government. In other words, it seems less political than it does spiritual from the biblical viewpoint. Right now we can only speculate about the nature of those signs and wonders that Satan will use to impress the kings of the earth. With the rising influence of Spiritualism in many reli- gious bodies and the growing emphasis on miracles and emotional feeling as the criteria of truth, we can expect some grandiose display of demonic power that will capture the attention and interest of every country in the world. We know that the great deceiver will impersonate ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 22 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 23 the coming of Jesus in some spectacular manner, and no one should doubt that such miraculous displays could make intellectual believers and cooperators out of Moslems, Hindus, Buddhists, Communists, or any other strain of na- tional or religious identity. And don’t discount the providen- tial influences that will be operating on the other side—God’s side—to prepare for the final events of the great contro- versy. Even though Satan is the tempo- rary prince of this world, God still has oversight of the rise and fall of nations. A divine destiny is even now influenc- ing the political processes and pressures in which certain relationships are being established between countries. The most atheistic observers have counted the rapid fall of international communism as an incredible develop- ment very close to a miracle. And almost everyone describes the lightning victory of the allied forces over Saddam Hussein as ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 23 5/13/10 5:36 PM 24 Three Unclean Spirits an unbelievable, impossible accomplish- ment. How could such a war be fought with so few casualties on one side? Yet in each of these recent cataclysmic actions— the fall of communism and the United States victory over Iraq—the results have been to place America in a center-stage position of influence over all the other na- tions. This is exactly what is demanded by the prophecy of Revelation 13. This coun- try will “deceive them that dwell on the earth … And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads” (Revelation 13:14–16). Another shocking activity of the sec- ond beast of Revelation 13 apparently is produced after it loses its lamblike qual- ity and begins to speak as a dragon. John wrote, “And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed” (Revelation 13:12). ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 24 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 25 As we have already discovered, the deadly wound was given to the papacy in 1798, and it has been in the process of healing since 1929 when the Vatican was established as a political state once again. According to this prophecy, the United States will begin to exercise a similar reli- gious intolerance as the Catholic Church and will use her influence to cause peo- ple allover the world to give spiritual al- legiance to that church. If this scenario seemed far-fetched and unlikely at some time in the past, it certainly is not that way today. The grow- ing political influence of Pope John Paul II in world affairs is a phenomenon of the very recent past. The United States has appointed an official representative to the head of that church state, and some amazing concessions have been made to accommodate the pope in his pilgrimage visits to this and other countries. A very significant statement ap- peared in the August 13, 1990, issue of ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 25 5/13/10 5:36 PM 26 Three Unclean Spirits U.S. News and World Report magazine. “Pope John Paul II discusses world af- fairs on the telephone with George Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev at least once a week, according to Professor Malachi Martin, a Roman Catholic theologian and Vatican insider. … Martin says the Pope offers the President informed analyses prepared by the Vatican’s intel- ligence network about developments in Eastern Europe and his personal assess- ments of the new leaders there as well as in the Soviet Union.” Such an unseemly alliance between papal churchmen and the heads of na- tions is certainly a violation of the tra- ditional American concept of separa- tion of church and state. But it fits in perfectly with the prophetic scenario of final events. Many students of proph- ecy found it difficult to believe that Catholicism could ever regain her pow- erful political clout after the “deadly wound” experience of the eighteenth ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 26 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 27 century. It was felt that Communist totalitarianism would always be around to limit the expansionistic aims of the pa- pacy. The two giant opposing forces were perceived as a necessary balance against each other so that neither could gain authoritarian superiority. Now all that has changed. It is gen- erally recognized that the Pope played a significant role in the collapse of interna- tional communism. The recent book The Keys of This Blood, written just before the iron curtain began its rapid dissolution, describes the obsessive determination of the present Pope to bring the entire world order under the spiritual domina- tion of the so-called Holy See of Rome. The author describes the concentrated focus of the papal attack on the com- munistic system, long recognized as the greatest obstacle to the Church’s goal. If time allowed, we could study the prophecy of Daniel 11 where the pre- cise victory of the king of the North ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 27 5/13/10 5:36 PM 28 Three Unclean Spirits (Catholicism) over the king of the South (Atheistic communism) is clearly pre- dicted. For three tense, dramatic days in August 1991, the world held its breath as the Russian coup appeared to reverse the prophetic agenda for the little time re- maining. Now, the road seems to be wide open for the Catholic power to fulfill its particular role, along with the dragon and the false prophet. Beginning with verse 40, we read the account of a mighty struggle tak- ing place at the time of the end between these two contending forces. The iden- tity of these symbolic kings can be es- tablished by comparing a few texts. In Isaiah 30:6, 7 the land of Egypt is identified as “of the south.” John the Revelator re- fers to France’s period of atheism around 1798 as that “which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt” (Revelation 11:8). Thus, we find the land of the Pharaohs connected to atheism. Indeed, it was the king of Egypt who made the proud boast, ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 28 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 29 “Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice?” (Exodus 5:2). As Daniel describes the continuing conflict between the king of the north and king of the south, we are made aware that his symbol of Egypt has come to rep- resent not just the arrogant spirit of that large country south of Israel but last-day atheism in whatever form it is manifest. Communism is the virulent form that atheism has assumed for the past many years, and much of Daniel 11 is describing the life and death clash of communism with its great foe, the king of the north. But who is this antagonist from the north who finally gains the ascendancy over the powers of atheism? Here are some texts that show beyond question that the primary application of this symbol was to Babylon. “Toward the north by the river Euphrates,” “in the north country by the river Euphrates,” “all the families of the north … and Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon” (Jeremiah 46:6; 46:10; 25:9). ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 29 5/13/10 5:36 PM 30 Three Unclean Spirits The literal city of Babylon was built right over the Euphrates River, but there is another future, spiritual applica- tion of Babylon revealed in the book of Revelation. The very last part of Daniel 11 also deals with the symbolic king of the north, or spiritual Babylon. Many phrases in this chapter give positive evi- dence that this power is the papacy. For instance: it shall “pollute the sanctuary,” “take away the daily sacrifice,” “magnify himself above all,” and “corrupt with flat- teries” (Daniel 11:31, 32). Now consider the high drama of this prediction in Daniel 11:40. “And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, … and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.” How significant it is that Newsweek magazine on December 25, 1989, trum- peted the news of the fall of communism in these words, “Days of the Whirlwind.” ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 30 5/13/10 5:36 PM Three Unclean Spirits 31 Commentary after commentary gave credit to the Pope for bringing down Gorbachev and the iron grip of atheism on Eastern Europe. The prophecy said it would be “like a whirlwind” and that is exactly how the media reported it. Bible students have long debated how the whole world could be influenced to wonder after the beast, and also how the kings of the earth could be drawn into that final encounter between good and evil. Now we can see how the greatest barrier has been removed, and the three unclean spirits are working through the beast, dragon, and false prophet to in- volve every soul in that “battle of the great day of God.” What an age to be alive! Excitement mounts as we ride the crest of towering events that sweep us toward the grand cli- max of history—the coming of Jesus. We need to be constantly aware of the fast- breaking signs that point to His return, but our preparation for that moment ThreeUncleanSpiritsUnmaskedText.indd 31 5/13/10 5:36 PM 32 Three Unclean Spirits in time involves more than knowledge. Only the pure in heart will see God and live in His presence. A total commitment of heart, mind, and body is the greatest need of every living soul. While the angels of Revelation hold the four winds of strife from blowing on the earth, and the glory of God gathers in the eastern skies, a final invitation is beginning to confront every man, wom- an, and child on this crumbling planet. “Come out of her, my people” is the call of the hour. God is gathering His faith- ful ones, who love Him supremely, to Mount Zion, the place of safety and salvation. The three unclean spirits are gathering the forces of apostate religion and compromising governments to the great day of battle. Today we stand in the valley of decision.

  • Hello, my name is Samantha Miles. I am proud to be part of CLI as a student and God will a tutor. I’ve been a believer in God for many years, although my faith journey has been fraught with struggles and doubts. I’ve faced numerous challenges in life, including physical, emotional, and spiritual abuse.

My parents introduced me to God, taking me to various churches to explore different doctrines. Yet, the abuse I endured led me to question my faith deeply, prompting me to plead with God for proof of His existence. When I was 18, a tragedy struck: my father shot and killed my mother, my eight-month-old sister, and himself. In the aftermath, many friends and family distanced themselves or unjustly blamed me, which was incredibly painful. I sought refuge in the church, but often found myself caught up in appearances rather than connecting with God’s spirit.

I thought I knew myself until I met my second husband, Timothy, who lived across from the house where my family had perished. Despite my initial hesitations, we moved away and began our family, blessed with two beautiful daughters, Jasmine and Issabella. Doctors had told me I couldn’t have children, but God had other plans. He has consistently blessed us, helping us overcome serious health issues, including cancer, heart attacks, and strokes.

I often tell people that there’s no testimony without a test. Life challenges us from the moment we are born, and we face trials every day. We should rejoice in God’s promise of eternal life. Daily prayer and devotion are profound gifts, as is our relationship with the Trinity. John 3:16 is a verse that resonates deeply with me: God loved us so much that He gave His Son, so that we may have everlasting life—free from pain and suffering.

I am pleased to say that in Christ's name we have started Northwest Florida's Traveler's Church. We are located at 208 West Dodwood Ave Defuniak Springs. Our previous church was bought out to expand HWY 331 in Freeport Florida. My family an I were in the process of finding a new church when I suffered my first stroke and could not get out and about. God sent a beautiful message that I had been tested in many ways and he knew my heart. I believe this is my true calling and my husband and our children believe this as well and they are studying with me to bring the word to others. We collect used and neglected Bibles to rehome. We also provide food for the needy when we are able. Our family looks at life in a unique way that affirms family bonding and hard work mixed with daily worship. We hope to spread God's word everyone paying special attention to the disabled and homeless. I am blessed because he loves me and I will spread the word of Jesus Christ.

  • So, what does Jonathan Roumie (Jesus in The Chosen) have to do with my story? Well, once I realized that I'm responsible for my family's spiritual health and growth, I also realized that I lacked the knowledge to properly get this job done, so I started taking classes through Christian Leaders Insitute (CLI). Their purpose, Free and low-cost Christian Education, matched up with my need. I'm not going to Bible College, but I would like educated. A chunk of the House-Church training was from the original House Church training created by Francis Chan. I really connected to his preaching and teaching style and have watched many more of his videos. In one, he was talking to a group of young people in Europe. He asked them, as you're driving down the road of life, and come upon Jesus walking alongside the road. Do you stop the car to pick him up or just keep going? If you did stop to pick him up, where do you find space for him in your car? So, much of my life, I only had space in the back seat. One day, I said, "Hey, why don't you move up here into the front with me. It would be easier to talk to you."
Sometime later, I heard the song, "Jesus take the wheel." for the first time in a long time. A short while after that, I hear Francis Chan ask "You have the opportunity to talk to the Creator of the Universe. Are you really going to give him a to do list?" I realize, in my car, I'm sitting in the wrong seat. I can't give Jesus a ride, as long as he is going where I'm going. So, 30 years after being baptized. I accepted the fact that we need to change seats, and I'm going where he is going, and I don't yet know where that is. But, along the way, we have picked up a few "supplies". I feel like we are getting ready to go on a trip.
