    A Wrinkled Wardrobe

    By Deborah Shaffer

    August 21st, 2026

“In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 1:6-7

I have a love-hate relationship with my spring and summer wardrobes. I’m always excited to pack up my heavy winter garments and replace them with the light colorful fabrics of springtime. However, what I don’t like are the wrinkles. It doesn’t seem to matter how carefully I fold or hang them after washing, my wardrobe is plagued by ugly wrinkles—and that’s when I have to reach for that dreaded iron. It is one of my most hated chores! However, I know that without the pressure of this heated tool, those wrinkles will remain. The article of clothing will stay in its unsightly condition and will not be worn, rendering itself useless.

That’s how it is for Christians, too. Even though we’re heaven-bound, we live in a world damaged by sin; and, at times, we allow it to contaminate our lives, causing ugly “wrinkles.” It’s at those times that the application of heat may be needed! Our Father knows exactly what it takes to get our wrinkles out. Pressure from the heat of trials—so unbearable when we’re going through them—may just be the exact thing needed to perfect us. The heat is not meant as punishment. The heat is a tool.

Maybe we’re going through a time in our lives when we’re feeling the heat. We know we are God’s children, we have called upon Jesus for salvation, we follow after Him; but life is hard.

Let’s not get discouraged. After the ironing is finished, we will be a beautiful garment—unwrinkled and pleasant to those around us.

  • Praise That Follows Obedience

    Scripture

    Judges 5:2 (NKJV)
When leaders lead in Israel when the people willingly offer themselves Bless the Lord

Willing Hearts Bring Victory and Praise

Judges chapter 5 is the Song of Deborah and Barak. It is a song of praise offered after God delivers Israel from oppression. Rather than focusing first on the enemy’s defeat the song begins by honoring God and acknowledging the willingness of the people who stepped forward in obedience.

This verse highlights two powerful truths. God works through leadership that leads courageously and through people who willingly offer themselves. Victory did not come because Israel was strong but because God’s people responded in obedience and unity. When God’s call was answered willingly praise followed naturally.

The phrase bless the Lord reminds us that worship is the right response after obedience. Praise recognizes that victory belongs to God alone. Gratitude guards the heart against pride and keeps focus on God’s faithfulness rather than human achievement.

For believers today Judges 5 reminds us that God still works through willing hearts. When leaders lead faithfully and people respond obediently God is honored and His power is displayed. Praise should follow obedience and victory should always lead back to worship.

    Reflection Questions

    1. Am I willing to offer myself when God calls

    2. Do I give God praise after He brings victory or deliverance

    3. How can my obedience encourage others to follow God

    Prayer

Lord God thank You for Your faithfulness and victory. Help me to respond willingly when You call and to follow with obedience and trust. Teach me to give You praise in every season and to bless You for all that You have done. In Jesus name Amen.

  • When God Goes Before You

    Scripture

    Judges 4:14 (NKJV)
Then Deborah said to Barak Up For this is the day in which the Lord has delivered Sisera into your hand Has not the Lord gone out before you So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him

Moving Forward When God Says Now

Judges chapter 4 tells the story of Deborah a prophetess and judge who led Israel during a time of oppression. The enemy commander Sisera had military strength and advanced weapons yet Israel’s deliverance did not depend on force or numbers. It depended on God’s timing and obedience.

In verse 14 Deborah declares a powerful truth. The victory was already decided because the Lord had gone before them. The command to move was not based on changing circumstances but on God’s promise. When God said now it was time to act.

Barak’s obedience mattered. He could have hesitated or feared the enemy’s strength but he chose to move forward when God’s word was spoken. God honored that obedience and brought a decisive victory that day.

For believers today Judges 4 reminds us that there are moments when God calls us to move forward in faith. Waiting past God’s timing can be as dangerous as acting without His direction. When God goes before us obedience brings confidence courage and victory.

    Reflection Questions

    1. Am I listening for God’s timing before acting

    2. Have I delayed obedience when God has already said move

    3. How does knowing God goes before me change how I face challenges

    Prayer

Lord God thank You that You go before me in every battle and decision. Help me to recognize Your timing and to move forward in obedience when You say now. Give me courage to trust Your promise and follow Your lead without hesitation. In Jesus name Amen.
