It’s time to stop looking away.
What happened with the Federal Constitutional Court’s judgment in the "Maria Shahbaz case" has sent shockwaves through our community. When a minor girl is abducted, forced into marriage, and "converted" against her will, it isn’t just a legal loophole—it is a heartbreaking failure of our system to protect its own children.
Yesterday in Lahore, the Church of Pakistan, led by Archbishop Dr. Azad Marshall and leaders from the Catholic, Presbyterian, and Pentecostal churches, stood together in an unprecedented show of unity. They are moving forward with a review petition, and at Good Samaritan Human Rights Pakistan, we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them in this fight.
But legal reviews alone aren't enough. We need systemic change.
Our "Protection of Women & Minor Girls" Charter:
We are pushing for three non-negotiable demands to end this epidemic of forced conversions:
The "18 Means 18" Law:We need a National Anti-Forced Conversion Law that strictly sets the minimum age for both conversion and marriage at 18. Period.
48 Hours of Safety: Any minor girl involved in these cases "must" be moved to a Neutral Shelter Home for 48 hours. She needs a safe space, away from her abductors, to give a statement that is actually hers, free from fear and coercion.
State-Funded Justice:Families shouldn't have to go bankrupt to find their daughters. We demand state-funded legal aid and a mandatory 24-hour police recovery window.
As the Church said so powerfully: "Justice must be seen to protect the weakest among us."
If we don't protect our daughters today, who will be left to lead our community tomorrow?
Please, don't just scroll past.Help us turn this moment of concern into a movement for change. Share this post, tag someone who cares about human and minority rights, and let’s make sure the voices of our girls are finally heard.
