  • So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”

    Luke 4:22 ɴᴋᴊᴠ

The Son of God begins His public ministry by teaching the Word of God in the Jewish synagogues. One example is in Nazareth. When He preaches there, the people are at first amazed at His wisdom and the words of grace He speaks to them. But it only takes a few minutes before the mood changes and they start to get angry with Him. Why? Because His words are not only pleasant but also seasoned with salt. That is why they suddenly say, “‘Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?’ So they were offended at Him” (Mk. 6:3).

How does He deal with the fact that people think so disdainfully of Him and see in Him nothing more than a common carpenter? Is He upset by their behavior? Not at all. Instead, He calmly presents to them a sad but true principle: it is written that Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house” (Mk. 6:4). He does not threaten them with judgment or rebuke them harshly.

Instead, He accepts with meekness from the hand of God the rejection He experiences from these people, before whose eyes He had lived for so long. With this attitude of heart, He simply moves on through the surrounding villages and continues His ministry. Even today, it is not uncommon for a servant of the Lord to be more appreciated in another place and country than at home, where they have been known from an early age and where they may be misjudged or met with envy and jealousy.

    Philip Svetlik

    Mighty King, with glory crowned,
Rightful Heir and Lord of all:Once rejected, scorned, disowned,
E’en by those Thou cam’st to call.

  • Can I not do with you as this potter? says the Lᴏʀᴅ. Look, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in My hand.

    Jeremiah 18:6

Let’s observe a potter at work: First, he takes a lump of clay and kneads it to make it pliable. Then, he places it on the potter’s wheel and shapes it. As he presses one hand into the interior, giving it the desired volume, he holds it with the other from the outside, smoothing, refining and shaping the clay. It takes much skill and experience to form a useful vessel out of a shapeless mass.

God is the potter who has shaped humans (the clay) according to His intention and wisdom. The patriarch Job expresses it to God: “Your hands have made me and fashioned me ... Remember, I pray, that You have made me like clay” (Job 10:8–9). But sin has corrupted everything. The vessel has became unusable for God; it is “marred” and no longer serves its purpose (Jeremiah 18:4). The problem doesn’t lie with God – He is a perfect potter! – but with us. What now?

The clay is still in the hand of God. When sinners repent by acknowledging God’s judgment of “uselessness” over their lives, He starts anew with us: He will make from the same lump of clay a vessel for His honour.

Everyone who has turned to God and has believed in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, has eternal life. A treasure has, so to speak, been placed into the vessel, making it valuable to God now. Yet the potter’s work is not finished. When believers feel pressure because of grief, illness or other difficulties weighing them down, it is God’s hand shaping their character: this is in order that we might please Him.
    Today’s reading: Joshua 19:1-51 · 1 Corinthians 14:26-40

    Topic: Protect Your Heart

    Bible Reference

“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:23 (NKJV)

    A Short Story

Ruth began talking to someone she met online. At first, their conversations were simple. They talked about school, work, family, and their plans for the future. He always seemed to know what to say, especially when she was having a difficult day.

After some time, Ruth became emotionally attached to him. She began checking her phone constantly, waiting for his messages. When he did not reply, her mood changed. When he was happy with her, she felt happy too.

Her prayer life slowly began to suffer. She spent more time talking to him than talking to God. She started hiding some of their conversations because she knew her parents and trusted spiritual leaders would not be comfortable with what was happening.

One evening, after an argument between them, Ruth sat on her bed and cried.

She suddenly realized how much control the relationship had gained over her heart.

She remembered something her mother had told her months earlier: “Not everyone who gains access to your heart has the right to remain there.”

Ruth picked up her Bible and began to pray.

She understood that protecting her heart did not mean refusing to love people. It meant being careful about who she allowed to influence her emotions, decisions, values, and relationship with God.

It was difficult, but Ruth decided to create boundaries and step away from the relationship.

    Today's Message

Your heart is valuable. What you repeatedly allow into it will eventually influence how you think, what you desire, and the decisions you make.

This is why Proverbs tells us to guard our hearts with diligence. You cannot allow everyone to have unrestricted access to your emotions and expect your spiritual life to remain unaffected.

This applies to friendships, relationships, social media, entertainment, conversations, and even the thoughts you repeatedly entertain.

Someone may make you feel good and still be taking you away from God's purpose for your life. Something may be popular and still be harmful to your spirit.

Guarding your heart is not weakness. It is wisdom.

Ask yourself regularly, “What is this relationship, habit, conversation, or content producing in me?”

If it is consistently drawing you away from God, you need the courage to create boundaries.

    What To Do Today

    1. Examine the people and influences that have the strongest effect on your decisions.

    2. Set boundaries where necessary.

    3. Stop entertaining anything that repeatedly weakens your relationship with God.

    4. Choose friends who encourage you to become better, not those who constantly pull you backward.

    Prayer

Lord, help me to guard my heart wisely. Give me discernment to recognize influences that are not good for me. Help me to establish healthy boundaries and keep my heart focused on You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

    Daily Challenge

Examine one relationship or influence in your life today and honestly ask yourself whether it is drawing you closer to God or pulling you away from Him.
