Florida and the Jesus Movement: The Revival Many People Don’t Know About
When people talk about the Jesus Movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s, most people immediately think of California. And that’s where the movement exploded. But Florida became one of the important places where that fire spread, especially through college campuses, house churches, street evangelism, and young people searching for something real.
Florida’s story was different from California’s. California became known for producing the famous “Jesus Music” sound, but Florida became known more for discipleship, revival communities, campus ministry, and reaching young people outside the walls of traditional churches.
One of the key names connected to Florida was Erskine Holt. During the early 1970s, Holt became a major leader among Florida’s Jesus People movement through the Fellowship House Churches. These communities spread throughout Florida and nearby states, creating places where young believers could live, worship, study the Bible, and reach others.
Another important Florida connection was the Jesus People Traveling Team USA, which traveled through areas including Florida. They used music, street evangelism, and personal relationships to reach young people who were far from traditional churches. Their ministry reflected the heart of the Jesus Movement, meeting people where they were.
Florida was also a major center for the Charismatic Renewal that overlapped with the Jesus Movement. Leaders connected with the Fort Lauderdale area included….Bob Mumford, Derek Prince, Charles Simpson, Don Basham and Ern Baxter.
These leaders became known as the “Fort Lauderdale Five” and helped shape the discipleship and spiritual growth side of the renewal movement that was happening in Florida during the 1970s.
What is interesting about Florida is that it did not produce the same number of famous Jesus Music artists as California. Instead, Florida helped produce something just as important… communities of believers who learned how to disciple people, plant churches, and carry the revival forward.
