  • THREE ANGELS BROADCASTING NETWORK DEVOTIONAL.
    Where Did It Go?

    By Deborah Shaffer

    July 21st, 2026

“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” Romans 8 verse 1

“Never look back.” I’ve heard this statement so many times, but I don’t agree with it. However, I do agree that we should not look back and allow condemnation over past sins and mistakes to bring us to despair. There are times though that looking back can be valuable, and a trip to the golf course one summer morning taught me this lesson.

It was very early and the sun was just coming up. As I approached the second hole, the sun was directly in my eyes, blinding me. I hit the ball with a perfect and mighty swing. The sound of the club striking the ball was like music to my ears, and I just knew it was one of the best hits I’d ever made. As I watched it fly straight down the fairway, the rays from the bright sun made me lose sight of the ball. I knew the general direction, but I had no clue where it had landed, even though I’d watched it until it hit the ground. I treaded off on the wet grass right down the middle of the fairway. I knew it went straight.

I carefully scanned the area around me as I eagerly anticipated my next superb shot. I searched every inch of where I thought the ball had landed, but to no avail. That’s when I decided to turn around. (Maybe it wasn’t as great a shot as I had imagined.) Much to my dismay, as soon as I turned around, I saw the bright yellow fluorescent ball much further back than I had thought.

You see, if I hadn’t looked back, I would have never come face-to-face with the truth. The truth was that I had hit the ball straight, and that was great! But the truth also was that I didn’t hit it very far—I needed to improve on that. No condemnation. Just facts.

In my daily walk with God I need to keep my eyes focused on my goals and hopes—God’s purpose for my life. I need to strive and push forward to achieve all that God is leading me to do. But I also need to stop and look back at times. It’s a good way to measure my progress—as well as making sure I’m still on the right course.

When I get discouraged, when I think I’m getting nowhere, I look back and see how far I’ve really come. I remember the good and ask God to help me improve where improvement is needed. Only after facing the truth can I deal with my next challenge with the confidence only God can give.

  • THE LORD WAS WITH HIM

“Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving! Pick up your staff and raise your hand over the sea. Divide the water so the Israelites can walk through the middle of the sea on dry ground.’” —Exodus 14:15–16

First Samuel 3:19 contains two extraordinary accolades regarding the Prophet Samuel: “The LORD was with him” and “Everything Samuel said proved to be reliable” (NLT). But those accolades raise some important questions: Why Samuel? Why did the Lord choose to be with him? Why did the Lord make sure that everything he said proved to be reliable?

The Bible doesn’t answer those questions directly, but it does offer some clues. Earlier in the chapter, we learn that, as a boy, Samuel served the Lord by assisting the Priest Eli in the tabernacle. One night, while Samuel was sleeping, he heard someone call his name. Assuming that it was Eli, Samuel rushed to the priest to see how he could be of service. But it wasn’t Eli who had called him. Three times Samuel heard the voice. And three times he rushed to Eli.

The fourth time Samuel heard his name called, he simply and humbly said, “Speak, your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:10 NLT). Why did God use Samuel in such a powerful way? Probably because he was available—not just during business hours, but in the middle of the night, out of a dead slumber. He was eager to serve every time his name was called.

Believers today can learn a lot from Samuel. We should always be available to be used by God. Our prayer should be, “Lord, You can use me anytime, anywhere, for any purpose—whether it’s my day off or not. I may be out surfing or on the golf course or out snowboarding, but I want You to call on me. I am always available to represent You. Please call on me.” Every Christian must be available and ready to echo the words of Samuel: “Speak, your servant is listening.”

God is not looking for ability as much as He is looking for availability. You may think, “God only uses the really talented people. He will never use me. There’s not much I can offer Him.” But God is looking for someone simply to be available and to let Him be strong on their behalf. God isn’t looking for strong people. He is looking for weak people through whom He can be strong. That means every person is qualified to be used by God. That means God can use you.

There is no telling how God will use you. But there are ways to make yourself available to Him. One is by putting yourself in the right place at the right time as much as possible. You can’t share your faith with others if you don’t interact or spend time with them. Another way to make yourself available to Him is to stay alert to the opportunities He sends your way.

Are you available to be used by God? If not, why don’t you let the Lord know that you would like Him to call upon you? If Samuel’s story teaches us anything, it’s that God may call upon you before the night is over.

    God bless you!

  • Why did Paul call himself “the chief of sinners”?

Why did Paul call himself “the chief of sinners”? Some point to 1 Timothy 1:15 to make the argument that Christians are called “sinners” in the New Testament. However, Paul only referred to himself as a sinner in the 1 Timothy passage because of his history of persecuting the church (Galatians 1:13). He was referring to his condition before salvation. We believers are not sinners by nature anymore. We are saints who sometimes sin.
Some believe Christians are simultaneously sinners and saints. To make their argument, they point to 1 Timothy 1:15 where Paul refers to himself as the “chief of sinners.” However, Paul was referring to his life before his conversion in this passage.
Before Paul was a believer, he was a zealous Pharisee and persecutor of the church (Galatians 1:13-14). It was Paul’s early life of killing Christians that led him to believe he had set a world record for heinous sin.
Consider Jack Nicklaus who has won more professional golf tournaments than any other player. Jack might say, “I’m the greatest golfer of all time”, yet he doesn’t play on tour anymore. Similarly, Paul felt that he set a record for being the worst sinner of all time, yet he wasn’t a sinner by nature anymore. He was a saint.
Being the worst sinner of all time was not the end of Paul’s story. Jesus invaded his life on the road to Damascus and stopped Paul dead in his tracks (Acts 9). After this encounter, Paul was forever a transformed man and became a leader of the very people he once persecuted.
Here’s the point of Paul’s words in 1 Timothy 1:15: If God can save Paul, he can save anybody. He can make a saint out of anyone! No sin is too great for God’s grace. Your sins are small, and your God is big. So, believe and rejoice in your new identity as a saint.
Nowhere in the New Testament are believers called sinners. If you are in Christ, you’re not a sinner anymore. You’re a saint who sometimes sins!
