    Patience and Fortitude.

    August 12th, 2026

The two stone lions in front of the New York Public Library were named Patience and Fortitude in the 1930s by then-mayor Fiorello LaGuardia for the qualities he felt New Yorkers would need to survive the Great Depression. The two lions in front of the public library in Manhattan have enchanted New York residents and tourists since the library’s dedication on May 23, 1911. The lions received several affectionate monikers over the years, but the names that finally stuck were Mayor LaGuardia’s.

When Jacob met the woman of his dreams at the well in Haran, little did he know how much patience and fortitude their love story would demand of him! First, he had to serve his father-in-law for seven years to acquire his bride. Then Laban tricked Jacob into marrying Rachel’s sister. When Jacob finally got to marry his dream girl, they were struck with the painful reality of infertility.

Then the poor man had to endure his wives’ sibling rivalry and Rachel’s obsession with becoming a mother. In Jacob’s culture, a woman’s value stemmed from childbearing, and Rachel was keenly aware of this societal pressure. When she was finally able to conceive, she died while giving birth to their second son.

No matter how “perfect” a potential mate seems at first sight, time reveals all faults. Not only are our loved one’s faults magnified under the microscope of intimacy, but our own faults show up as well. Christian music artist Stephen Curtis Chapman says, “Without my marriage I may have actually been able to get through life under the illusion that I’m a pretty decent guy.” Paul says that love is patient, kind, and long-suffering. Marriage offers the opportunity to learn—and demonstrate!—the unconditional love shown to us by our great God.

    Key Bible Texts
And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her. (Genesis 29:20 KJV)

    Seven Minutes with God.

By Curtis Badger December 18th, 2025

“My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning I will direct it to You, and I will look up.” Psalm 5:3

Growing up as a Roman Catholic, I knew of the Bible, since I received one at my First Communion when I was seven, but I certainly did not know the Bible. All that changed when I met my wife Dara. She introduced me to the Seventh-day Adventist beliefs and the wonderful Bible truths they share and teach.

As I studied with my new pastor, and even after I was baptized, I didn’t fully realize my connection with the Lord. But now I’ve worked my way through the Bible and I’ve spent time every day with my Heavenly Father.

With my wife’s assistance, I found Robert Foster’s book, Seven Minutes with God, which teaches us to approach Him in a personal manner. We start our seven minutes with God with a 30-second preparation of our hearts, thanking Him for a good night’s sleep and a chance to live another day. We say something like, “Lord, please cleanse our hearts so we can hear You speak to us through Your Word. Give us guidance, ready our ears, and make us alert. Create a responsiveness in us, and surround us with the knowledge of Your presence right now as we listen to You. Amen.”

Next, we spend four minutes listening to God by reading our Bible. We find a good chapter, or choose a book of the Bible, and digest it. There are many tools to help us understand it, like Bible apps, concordances, Bible commentaries, or even the 3ABN Bible study guides. But our greatest need is to hear from God and allow His Word to strike fire in our hearts!

We spend the next two-and-a-half minutes talking to God through prayer. A useful acronym to remember is ACTS: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication

Adoration is deep love and respect—the purest form of prayer. It’s all about God, and nothing about us. We worship Him, tell Him we love Him, reflect on His greatness, His power, His majesty, and His sovereignty.

Confession is where we admit our wrong-doings and mistakes. We want to be sure every sin is cleansed and forsaken. And this is important: He already knows what we’ve done, so we want to let Him know that we are repentant.

Thanksgiving is where we express the gratitude we have for Him. We should be specific, thanking Him for our family, our work, and our church. We thank Him for answered prayers, and for the hardships we face, since these are part of who we are.

And finally, in Supplication we ask for something earnestly and humbly—making our petitions known to Him. First, we ask for others, then we can ask for ourselves. We include our family, workplace, community, even our state, nation, or other parts of the world. We can pray for missionaries, ministries, college students, or someone we know who’s serving in the military. But above all, we pray for the lost ones we know personally, and for those who have yet to hear about Jesus.

We quickly realized that seven minutes was nowhere near enough time—and soon we were taking 15, then 20, and even 30 minutes a day. Quite often, a whole hour goes by before we realize it—and we are those who, just a few years ago, spent zero minutes a day in prayer, and worked 80-100 hours a week!

And finally, if you’ve never done so, please read the Bible from Genesis through Revelation. You will benefit greatly, and feel free to use an app that reads it to you if you like. But whatever you do, do not become devoted to the habit or pattern itself. Instead, devote yourself to your Savior! Spend time with Him because He grants you the priceless privilege of fellowship with Him.

Try it seven minutes a day for seven days in a row. Yes—Seven. Days. In. A. Row. I know that if you do, you’ll find it to be so meaningful that you’ll desire to do it more!

    Trusting God in Every Season.

By Curtis Badger December 10th, 2025

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV)

Trust is one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, aspects of our relationship with God. Life often presents us with uncertainty—whether it’s through an unexpected trial, an unanswered prayer, or a season of waiting. In these moments, our nature urges us to take control, to figure it out on our own. However, the Scriptures remind us to trust in the Lord with all our heart, not just when things are going well, but in every circumstance.

Trusting God means believing He is good—even when life is difficult or doesn’t make sense. It means surrendering our fears, anxieties, and doubts to Him, knowing that His plans are greater than our own.

When we lean on our own understanding, we risk being led by our emotions and limited knowledge. But when we trust God we walk by faith, confident that He knows and sees the bigger picture. Personally, I no longer like my decisions to be mine. I want them to be His.

    Is this easy? Absolutely not!

Let’s look at the story of Joseph. Betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, then imprisoned—Joseph had every reason to doubt God’s plan. Yet, he remained faithful, trusting that God was working behind the scenes.

How about Daniel and his friends? They would not bow down to the false gods of Babylon—even when facing a fiery trial. Daniel even faced the lion’s den, but he kept his faith and trust in God.

So what about you? Are you facing uncertainty in your life? Is it your job? Maybe a relationship. Or possibly an entirely uncertain future? God is calling you to trust Him. He doesn’t promise that life will be free from trouble. In fact, due to our sinful nature, life is guaranteed to be quite the opposite. But He does promise that He will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:8).

Today, choose to place your trust in the One who holds the Universe in His hands. Pray and surrender your worries to Him. Ask Him for guidance, then walk forward in faith, believing that He will direct your steps.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6–7.

This is my prayer that I share with you today:

Heavenly Father, I confess that sometimes I struggle to trust You, especially when I don’t understand what You’re doing. Help me to surrender my fears and doubts, knowing that You are always in control. Strengthen my faith and remind me that Your plans are good. Thank You for Your unwavering love and faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Trust isn’t about knowing. It’s about knowing to trust in the One who does.

    Angels’ Wings.

By Curtis Badger December 4th, 2025

“For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” Psalm 91:11–12 (NIV)

The weather in Southern Illinois can be quite unpredictable at times, and recently, we did have a rather nasty ice storm. The weather forecast was calling for 8 to 12 inches of snow, but there was a chance for freezing rain or sleet, depending on how the storm progressed.

When it was all said and done, we did get about 8 inches of snow. I personally love a good snowfall, as it makes for quite a beautiful view. However, that is not all we got with this storm, since as it approached, the temperature hovered right around freezing. Unfortunately for us, it stayed there, and we were hit with the freezing rain and sleet.

Anyone who knows winter weather knows that ice is bad to start off with. Well, we got about two or three hours of freezing rain. The wind was calm during the storm, so we got a good “soaking” of freezing rain. It coated everything, the ground, our vehicles, trees, power lines—everything!

While there is beauty in ice-covered trees, there is also a very inherent danger. The more it sleeted, the thicker the ice got, and it weighed heavily on our trees. This led to many trees snapping under the weight, and that caused widespread power outages. Our power went out around 4:00 p.m. that afternoon and stayed out for about 48 hours. This created an eerie environment due to the lack of noise. We could hear all the trees outside moaning and groaning under the weight of that ice.

I was in our kitchen finding some flashlights and preparing to hunker down during the power outage when I heard a very large snap, followed by a large gust of wind, and a house-shaking thud!

I quickly went outside to assess what had happened. A very large branch from our oak tree had broken off, right above our house. However, it had not landed on our house, but in a 9-foot by 9-foot square between our house, our deck, and our garage! Quite literally, the only place it could have landed and not done any damage!

Like I said earlier, this storm had no wind associated with it, so obviously God had sent His angels to protect us. That gust of wind surely must have been the angels keeping us and our home safe. If that wind had not been there, that large tree branch would have come crashing down through our home, very near our kitchen, where I stood when it fell.

God does send his angels to protect us; and whether or not we see them or feel their presence, they are always there for us—just like God’s love. Thank God for His love and His protecting angels.
