This current generation is exposed to attacks from the enemy on a level we have never seen before. When scripture encourages you to be sober, it is because we have an enemy that is not at any moment intoxicated – we are dealing with an enemy who knows how to keep himself sane. So being sober becomes a requirement in order for you to have an edge over the enemy.
