August 22 - Jesus’ Availability to Jairus #LifeOfChrist “Jesus got up and began to follow him, and so did His disciples” (Matthew 9:19). Jesus was always willing to go out of His way to serve others in the Father’s name. This trait was certainly evident as Christ reached out to Jairus with accessibility and availability. There were certainly many other needy people in the region near Jairus, but the urgency of the synagogue leader’s circumstances demanded that Jesus go to Jairus’s home. From a distance the Lord could have sent the power to raise the man’s daughter from the dead. He chose, however, to manifest selfless love and compassion by following the grieving Jairus to his home. God is sensitive not only to the needs of the many but to the cry of individuals in need. The Holy Spirit’s work through Philip in Acts 8 illustrates this principle. In the midst of a highly profitable ministry in Samaria, an angel dispatched the evangelist to Gaza (v. 26). Right away Philip met the Ethiopian eunuch, the royal official who served the queen of Ethiopia. When the Holy Spirit prompted Philip to approach the man, the evangelist found an eager seeker about the things of God and was able to lead him to saving faith in Christ (vv. 35–37). God sometimes leads us, as He often led His own Son and the early disciples, to temporarily set aside a larger ministry to focus on the need of one person—and He wants us to be available. After all, Jesus did promise that every single individual who genuinely “comes to Me I will certainly not cast out” (John 6:37). Ask Yourself Who comes to mind when you think of someone God has called you to influence at this point in time? Avoid the temptation to withhold yourself from others, not wanting to get involved in the messiness of their needs and problems, when Jesus has called you to compassion.

Conflict and Courage Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God. Psalm 68:31. Throughout his ministry Isaiah bore a plain testimony concerning God's purpose for the heathen. Other prophets had made mention of the divine plan, but their language was not always understood. To Isaiah it was given to make very plain to Judah the truth that among the Israel of God were to be numbered many who were not descendants of Abraham after the flesh. This teaching was not in harmony with the theology of his age, yet he fearlessly proclaimed the messages given him of God and brought hope to many a longing heart reaching out after the spiritual blessings promised to the seed of Abraham.... Often the Israelites seemed unable or unwilling to understand God's purpose for the heathen. Yet it was this very purpose that had made them a separate people and had established them as an independent nation among the nations of the earth. Abraham, their father, to whom the covenant promise was first given, had been called to go forth from his kindred, to the regions beyond, that he might be a light bearer to the heathen. Although the promise to him included a posterity as numerous as the sand by the sea, yet it was for no selfish purpose that he was to become the founder of a great nation.... “I will bless thee,” Jehovah declared, “and make thy name great; ... in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” ... No distinction on account of nationality, race, or caste, is recognized by God.... Christ came to demolish every wall of partition, to throw open every compartment of the temple courts, that every soul may have free access to God. His love is so broad, so deep, so full, that it penetrates everywhere. It lifts out of Satan's influence those who have been deluded by his deceptions, and places them within reach of the throne of God, the throne encircled by the rainbow of promise. If they ask a question you’ve heard a hundred times, you answer it as if you’d never heard it before. There’s a ride called the Jungle Cruise, and the most common question asked about it is, ‘How long is this ride?’ So the staff is given a prepared, standard answer: ‘The Jungle Cruise is an exciting adventure ride that lasts ten minutes.’ But one employee had been asked it once too often, so when a couple asked, ‘How long is the Jungle Cruise?’ he said, ‘Three days.’ The couple got out of the line, left the park, went back to Disney Hotel where they were on their honeymoon, packed up their suitcases, checked out, and came back to the line at the Jungle Cruise. Cornelius was said to be a devout man who gave alms to support people. He was not an Israelite, but a Roman soldier, a gentile, outside of the commonwealth of Israel. Being a centurion means he was a leader over 100 men. An angel was sent to him by God to acknowledge his devoutness and alms giving. Knowing that that wasn't enough, he was directed to invite Apostle Peter to expound to him the gospel requirements for salvation more perfectly.* *The text highlights the significance of understanding Cornelius's character as the key to his esteemed relationship with God, which transcended his position as a centurion. Despite his military rank and prestige, Cornelius's true legacy lay in his love for the Lord and his generosity. His devout lifestyle inspired others, yet it was emphasised that neither good deeds nor religious piety can secure salvation; faith in the Gospel is essential. The angel's visit to Cornelius was not intended to preach the Gospel, as it is divinely decreed that those who have experienced salvation share the Gospel message, underscoring that salvation is a matter of grace through faith, not works.* *The main lesson here is the need to impact the world with our resources. We are remembered for what we do for others. God has left a far more valuable treasure for us than whatever was promised by Mr. Singer in our introduction. God wants to use us to tell other people about this treasure. We need to urgently preach Christ to our neighbours. And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God. 5 And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter: 6 He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do. 7 And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually; 8 And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa *Timeless Truth:*_"But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God"_ (Acts 5:39). *INTRODUCTION* There is no way of worshipping God that has faced so much oppositions from both powers and peoples as the gospel of Jesus Christ. If human powers and wisdom could destroy Christianity and the Bible, they would have been destroyed not long after it was birthed at pentecost. The Jewish leaders did all they could to stop the Gospel, but it was birthed by pentecostal power and became dominant among the Jews. The external powers could not stop the spread. Apostle Peter, by the Holy Spirit, opened the door for the evangelization of the Jews at Pentecost in fulfilment of Matthew 16:19 despite the stiff oppositions by the Jews. *"And I will give unto you the keys of the kingdom..."* Though Jesus Christ commanded that the Gospel should be preached *"to the uppermost part of the world"*, the mindset of the Apostles was to preach the gospel to the Jews exclusively in *"the uppermost part of the world"*. Jesus had to break this mindset by using Apostle Peter to bring the gospel of salvation to the non-Jews or Gentiles, thus, breaking the internal barrier to the salvation of the Gentiles. This monumental breakthrough in the preaching of the Gospel is the subject of the text. When God determines to save a soul, no barrier of race, culture, distance, status or tradition can ultimately stop Him. The Gospel advances because God Himself is committed to its fulfilment. *1. Ardent and Faithful to God* a. Cornelius was not the first Gentile convert of the Gospel. Phillip, seven years before then, had preached the gospel that led to the conversion of the Eunuch of Ethiopia (Acts 8). That was made possible through the ministry of an angel. Were it left to Phillip to decide and preach to the Gentile Eunuch, he might have refused. Cornelius and his family were the first Gentile family or household to receive the Gospel and and got converted. Under the Law, we could claim that he was saved and righteous, though a Gentile. *“A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house.”* His deep devotion was backed up by works. *"Who gave much alms to the people and prayed always"*. Under salvation by works, he was a candidate for heaven. However, under the gospel of salvation by grace, he was not qualified for heaven. He needed to know Jesus Christ, the only way to God, and believe the Gospel. *"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved"* (Acts 4:12). If Cornelius had rejected the gospel, but relied only on his righteousness, he would have been damned. *"He that believeth not shall be dammed"*. b. The case of Cornelius reinforces the fact that good works and personal righteousness are not enough for salvation. In fact, faithful devotion to God in prayers, fasting and good works are too impotent to bring real salvation to the heart of man. There must be faith in the atoning work of Christ on the Cross and acceptance of Jesus as Lord and Saviour. Outside Christ, *"all our righteousness is as filthy rags"* (Isaiah 64:6). *Question* Do you rely on your good works and self righteousness for salvation? *2. Angelic Facilitators of the Gospel* a. When Phillip, the evangelist, first got a gentile converted, it took the ministry of an angel. The same to Apostle Peter and the conversion of the Cornelius and his family. The conversion of Cornelius was more celebrated and noticed by the Early Church because, unlike the Eunuch of Ethiopia, Cornelius was not only saved, his whole family was included and they also received the baptism with the Holy Spirit with the initial evidence of speaking in unlearned and unknown language. None of these two ministers would have reached out to those Gentiles without the ministry of the angels because of their biases against Gentiles when it came to salvation of souls. Cornelius *"saw in a vision evidently...an angel of God coming"*. The angel called him by name and assured him that his prayers and charitable deeds had come before God as a memorial. Sinners who are sincere with God will always be given the opportunity to know the truth unto salvation. This throws a challenge to Christians to be sensitive to God as to who and when to reach out to a soul. This divine visitation demonstrates that heaven was actively working to bring Cornelius into contact with the Gospel. God was more eager to get him saved than anybody else including Apostle Peter. He is *"not willing that any should perish"*. b. God can employ extraordinary means to advance His saving purpose. Angels may facilitate God's work, but they do not replace the preaching of the Gospel. The angel did not preach Christ to Cornelius; instead, he directed Cornelius to send for Apostle Peter. God uses heavenly and earthly instruments together to accomplish His redemptive purposes. The divine-human partnertship are needed to effect the work of God and in particular the preaching of the gospel. Believers therefore, must be prayerful and sensitive to divine guidance in order to be fruitful. The less we rely on the arms of the flesh and the more we put our full confidence and trust in the guidance of the power of the Holy Spirit, the more fruitful we will be in the work of soulwinning. *Question* Am I available for God to use me as an instrument through whom someone else may hear and receive the Gospel? Do I wait on God to receive divine guidance in soulwinning? *3. Assignment Towards Gospel Fullness* Cornelius' salvation is rooted in his obedience to the voice of God and not the voice of any other. He was not only saved, but was baptized with the Holy Spirit. It must be observed that apart from the fact that Phillip did not publish the conversion of the Eunuch, he did not minister the baptism with the Holy Ghost to him. Cornelius and his household were baptized with the Holy Spirit while Apostle Peter was still preaching.There was an uproar and noise that the Gentiles could get the same experience of power of the Holy Spirit. The world cannot receive the Holy Spirit and the devils hate the power of the Holy Spirit too for obvious reasons. Salvation in Christ Jesus is a complete salvation. However, salvation without the power of the Holy Spirit is insufficient for a believer to do great exploits for God and be a terror to the kingdom of darkness. The Holy Spirit is given to them that obey Him. *"And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him"* (Acts 5:32). Cornelius did not delay, debate or disregard the divine instruction. His obedience became an important link in God's plan to bring the fullness of the Gospel to his household. This reminds us that divine instructions demand human cooperation. God may open doors, prepare hearts and arrange circumstances, but believers must respond obediently. *Question* What Gospel assignment has God placed before me and am I faithfully obeying Him without delay like Cornelius and Apostle Peter did? *Prayer Points* 1.Lord, teach me more never to rely on my personal goodness and righteousness for divine favour and salvation 🙏. 2.Father, make me a willing instrument through whom You can facilitate the spread of the Gospel to others. Help me to be sensitive to divine guidance 🙏. 3.Lord, I ask for more power of the Holy Spirit for more fruitfulness in the preaching of the gospel 🙏. 4.Father, give understanding to the church goers (you can mention names) who are not yet saved because they are trusting their self righteousness and good works and help them to get real and genuine salvation in Christ🙏. *HYMN:* GO AND TELL THE STORY *BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:* JOB 5-8. 2. A leader is at risk of elimination, especially when his close associates are not trustworthy or do not allow God's grace in their lives. Elisha wept for the harm Hazael would do to Israel (2 Kgs. 8:12). In this text, Hazael attacked Joash, the king of Judah, and plundered its wealth and resources. At these trying and grieving moments, instead of comforting and seeking ways to untie the city, king Joash's officials conspired and assassinated him mercilessly. Rebels do not respect the sacredness of life. Today, there is a high level of rebellion among subordinates and defamation of leaders' character, often for personal gain. Do not conspire against your leaders; instead, pray, advice, and support them appropriately. *REFLECTION:* Good followers make good leaders. *PRAYER:* Lord, help me not to be a rebel. Unlike physical illnesses, the great news is that this disease has an easily accessible and permanent cure: the active pursuit of true knowledge. God has never demanded from man what He has hidden from him. Throughout Scripture, the Lord has graciously revealed His will in a way that can be understood, received and obeyed. Moses reminded Israel that God's commandments were neither mysterious nor inaccessible. Likewise, under the New Testament, salvation through Christ has been plainly declared to all. Therefore, ignorance cannot be presented as an excuse by anybody for rejecting God's truth. It is also a challenge for all believers to vigorously spread the Word, whether it will be accepted or not. *1.Comprehensibility of the Word of God* a. Moses declared that God's commandment *"is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off".* The implication is that God's Word is readily accessible to those who care. Beyond that, it is not a mysterious book written by mysterious people. Though it is authored by God, it is written by men in the language of men with all simplicity. b. The onus is on sincere seekers to access His Word which are available in print forms, online, social media and in many pulpits. Besides, it has been stored in different repositories. It is difficult to find a standard library without a copy of the complete Bible. For the blind, there are a lot of audio recordings of the Bible. The Bible remains the most circulated book in human history and even people of other religions don't feel complete without having a copy of the Holy Bible. It is as important to the human soul as food is important to the human body. *". that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.*" (Deuteronomy 8:3). The human spirit will famish and be weak without the abiding Word of God in the heart. Nobody has any excuse except the inexcusable excuse of the will. God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33). He has revealed His truth through His written Word, the ministry of the Holy Spirit and faithful teachers of the Scriptures. The problem is often not the obscurity of God's Word, but the unwillingness of men to study, believe and obey it. God's instructions are understandable to every sincere seeker who approaches His Word with humility and faith. *Question* Do I sincerely seek to understand and obey God's revealed Word or which of the Bible teachings do I hide behind ignorance as an excuse for disobedience? *2.Closeness of the Word of God* a. Moses emphasized that no one needed to ascend into heaven or cross the sea to discover God's truth. Yes, there are people who, out of spiritual thirst like the Eunuch of Ethiopia, travel to seek the Word of God. Those people travelled far to know the interpretation of the Word and not just to have access to it. In fact, the Eunuch was found reading the Scriptures by the time Phillip met him. The Lord had already brought His revelation near to His people. Gone are those days when the reading of the Bible was reserved to few people who were trained in the Latin language. Today, we possess the complete Scriptures in almost all our own languages. Even the illiterates enjoy the ministry of faithful preachers and have unprecedented access to biblical resources. Those who reject God's message cannot claim that it was beyond their reach. The issue is not the absence of revelation, but the response of the human heart. b. *"But the word is nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it"*. The essence of the Word of God goes beyond knowing the truth and sharing the truth with others. Most importantly, it is to be obeyed. The blessings are in obedience not in mere reading or knowledge. Those who read, but don't obey it are called fools. *"For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth"* (James 1:23). *Question* Are you a committed student of the Word of God? Am I taking advantage of the abundant opportunities God has given me to know and obey His Word? *3.Christ's Way of the Gospel* Apostle Paul applies this passage directly to the gospel of Christ (Romans 10:6-10). He explained that in the New Testament or gospel economy, you don't have to travel to any sphere of creation to seek for the Saviour and get saved. You only need faith in the Word of God and confession of Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour to get saved. *"The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is the word of faith, which we preach."* Why you may visit places to get enriched in the Word of God, you don't have to go on pilgrimage or travel anywhere to get saved. It is just by believing wholeheartedly in the Lord Jesus Christ according to the Word of God. Salvation does not require impossible human efforts to bring Christ down from heaven or raise Him from the dead. Christ has already accomplished the work of redemption through His death and resurrection. *"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. *" For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."* (Romans 10:9–10). Since the gospel has been clearly proclaimed, no one will be able to plead ignorance before God. *Question* Have I personally, responded to the gospel by trusting Christ alone for my salvation and confessing Him as Lord without trusting on any other thing? *Prayer Points* 1.Father, I will be more committed to studying Your Word. Water Baptism NKJV Meaning of Baptism Romans 6:1-11 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 'For you will be His witness to all men of what you have seen and heard. 'And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.'

Matthew 10 Jesus begins this day with the calling of His 12 Apostles for the purposes of giving them the authority over demons. He is sending them out to preach and will be giving strict rules about what they should be doing and what they shouldn't. Here, He is giving us the names of those he called and this serves two purposes, one, it is Matthew's proud account of his service in the gospel. But two, it served as an honest confession of what Roman leaders would use as Matthew admitting that all 12 were guilty of crimes that would eventually cost their lives. Matthew continued ministering after the early church scattered due to persecution. Early historians suggest that he traveled to Ethiopia where the eunuch of Queen Candace, (we met him from the book of Acts) was busy establishing the Christian church in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Bible is the oldest manuscript available of God's word. It is in Ethiopia that Matthew was martyred by flaying. (Skinned alive) Simon, the hothead disciple, who was later named Peter. Peter ministered around the Judeo Roman world. Peter's early church leadership had major issues when he wrongfully withdrew from ministering to Gentiles. It is said that Peter was martyred by being crucified upside down. Sadly, some use Peter as an excuse and openly use an upside down cross in their rituals. Doing so is straight up demonic, no matter what tradition teaches. Andrew ministered as far away as Greece. So he stayed close to Peter but was traveling on his own as well. Little is known but what is known is that he was martyred by being tied, not nailed, to a cross. This actually entailed longer agonizing hours than a crucifixion using nails. And the beams he was tied to were in the shape of an ‘X’. It is known as Saint Andrew's cross. James has the distinction of being the first Apostle to be martyred. King Herod had him beheaded and that account is found in the book of Acts. His is the only Apostle martyrdom we find record of in Scripture. John, James’ brother, has the distinction of being the last Apostle to die. So the deaths of James and John ‘bookmark’ the age of the Apostles. Most sources say he died of old age. Philip the Apostle worked mainly in the Asia Minor area of the world. He is not to be confused the Philip the deacon from Acts who baptized the Ethiopian eunuch. The Apostle Philip is said to have been martyred in Asia Minor, some say by stoning others by beheading. Bartholomew, also called Nathaniel, preached in India and in regions around Armenia. King Astyages of Armenia was angered when Bartholomew converted his brother to Christianity and pursued him with a vengeance. Bartholomew's martyrdom was more of a wrathful murder than an execution as the King had him skinned alive, then prior to him dying of blood loss and trauma, the King ordered him beheaded. Thomas, yes doubting Thomas, was traveling through India with the gospel. Thomas was martyred by being impaled on a spear while preaching. This was the common method of execution where it took place in Chenai, India. James, son of Alphaeus called James the less or Little James. James has the distinction of having two differing accounts of his martyrdom. One claims he was crucified in Egypt while another claims he was stoned in Jerusalem. Thaddeus and Simon the Zealot share the distinction that they were the only two Apostles who were martyred almost at the same time. If the method for Nathaniel was cruel Simon met that threshold tenfold. Simon was placed into a hollow log and was sawn in half like Isaiah the prophet was. Thaddaeus is said to have been stoned in Persia. Judas Iscariot did not get martyred; he killed himself by hanging. In Acts, his place as an Apostle is removed and given to Matthias who himself was martyred by being stoned in 80 AD. Matthias we will discuss in our Acts study later. Now you know who they are, next we will discuss what they were given to do.
