Heb.10:24-25
"And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching."
The writer knew some people had already given up on gathering together. He says don't forsake it. But notice the purpose. Not to perform. To stir up love. To encourage each other. If your church feels fake, you're not alone. But don't give up on the idea of community. You might just need a different one.
PN: This week, visit one different church or small group. Just try it. You don't have to commit. You're just looking for a place where people seem real. Where they admit struggles. That exists. Keep looking.
1John.1:7
"But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin."
Walking in the light means being honest. Not hiding. When people hide, fellowship dies. Real community happens when people say "me too" instead of "praise God I'm fine." You can't have fellowship in the dark. You need light. Honesty.
PN: Be the honest one first. In your small group or with one friend, say something real. "I'm struggling." "I don't have it together." You might be surprised how many people say "me too." You just broke the fake ceiling.
Rom.12:4-5
"For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another."
You need the body. And the body needs you. Even when it's messy. Even when people disappoint you. You're a necessary part. Your absence leaves a hole. Not because you're special. Because that's how bodies work. Every part matters.
PN: Ask yourself, "What can I bring to community instead of what can I get?" Even something small. Bring cookies. Bring a listening ear. Bring honesty. When you shift from consumer to contributor, community starts to feel more real.
Gal.6:2
"Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."
Burden bearing is messy. It's not potlucks and handshakes. It's sitting with someone in their pain. Letting them sit with you in yours. That's real community. And it's rare. But it's possible. You just have to find one or two people willing to get dirty.
PN: Find one person this week and say, "I don't need you to fix anything. Can I just tell you what's really going on?" That's asking them to bear your burden. Then ask them, "What's heavy on you?" That's you bearing theirs. That's church.
Prov.27:17
"As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend."
Sharpening isn't comfortable. It's friction. Real friends rub against each other. They challenge each other. They don't just agree. If your community never disagrees, never challenges, it might be fake. Real iron sharpens iron. It makes sparks.
PN: If you have a friend who only ever says "praying for you" but never asks hard questions, gently invite them deeper. Say, "Can we be the kind of friends who tell each other the truth?" See what happens.
Acts.2:44-47
"Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need... And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved."
The early church wasn't perfect. But they shared life. Real needs. Real resources. Real daily gathering. That's the model. Not a building. Not a program. People sharing actual lives. That kind of community still exists. You might have to start it.
PN: If you can't find real community, start one. Invite two or three friends to meet weekly. No agenda. Just food and honesty. Say "we're not going to pretend." That's how the early church grew. One small group at a time.
Practical summary for the week:
Day 1: Visit one different church or small group. Just try it.
Day 2: Be the honest one. Say something real to one person.
Day 3: Ask "What can I bring?" instead of "What can I get?"
Day 4: Find one person and say "Can I tell you what's really going on?" Then listen to them too.
Day 5: Invite a friend to go deeper. "Can we tell each other the truth?"
Day 6: If you can't find community, start one. Two or three people. Food. Honesty.
Day 7: Forgive someone at church who hurt you. Not because they deserve it. Because you deserve freedom.
Church is messy because people are messy. But fake church is often just scared people. Scared to be real. Scared to be rejected. You can be the one who stops pretending. Not by being loud or confrontational. By being honest. One honest person changes the whole room. Be that person. And if that room won't change, find another room. But don't give up on the body. You need them. They need you.
