• "For you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's."

    1 Corinthians 6:20

    BELONGING TO GOD

Here, Paul responds to those in the Corinthian church who justified sexual immorality with the statement, "Everything is permissible for me." He sets them straight: you no longer belong to yourselves. You have been bought, and the price paid was not small. It is the blood of the Son of God.

In the Greco-Roman world, a slave redeemed by a benefactor now belonged to him. Paul reverses this image: you were bought not to pass from one master to another, but to belong to the One who loved you unto death. This belonging is not servitude; it is grace.

The Greek word translated as “redeemed at a great price” speaks of a costly, voluntary transaction. God did not negotiate a discount for us. He gave us what was most precious to Him. This reality fundamentally changes how we should view what we do with our bodies and spirits.

We live in a culture that treats the body as personal property to be freely disposed of according to one's desires and pleasures. Paul, on the contrary, affirms that our body is not our property. It is the temple of the Holy Spirit, redeemed by the blood of Christ.

The final exhortation here, “glorify God,” is the logical consequence of redemption. Not to merit being redeemed, but because we have already been redeemed. Holiness is not the entry ticket to grace; it is the natural response of one who has understood what grace cost them.

You were bought at a price you can never repay. The only response expected of you is to give glory to the One who paid this price. Your body, your mind, your entire life—nothing is too small to offer to God in thanksgiving. Before making any decision about your body or your mind, what you watch, what you say, what you consume, ask yourself this simple question: "Does this glorify the One who redeemed me at such a great price?" Lord, may every thought, every action, every choice of this day bring You glory. I am Yours. Amen.
