To “rightly divide” (Greek: orthotomeō) literally means to cut straight - as a skilled worker would hew a straight path or a priest would divide the sacrificial offering with precision. Paul, speaking to Timothy, charges every believer - especially those handling Scripture - to be accurate, honest, and Spirit-led in their interpretation and teaching of God’s Word. ✅ It means discerning context over convenience. ✅ It means understanding genre, covenant, audience, and time. ✅ It means not forcing personal opinions into divine revelation. ✅ It means distinguishing between what was descriptive and what is prescriptive. ✅ It means interpreting the Old Testament in light of Christ, not apart from Him (Luke 24:27).
