• The Most Dangerous Enemy Is Not Outside You

Many people spend their lives fighting external battles, yet lose the war within.
The greatest threat to your destiny is often not your environment, your critics, or your circumstances. It is the unchecked impulse that quietly influences your decisions.

An impulse may seem harmless at first—a moment of anger, fear, envy, pride, lust, or laziness. But what we repeatedly excuse eventually begins to control us.

As I wrote in Animal Impulse:

"You were not created to be ruled by your impulses. You were created to rule over them."
    The Bible reminds us:
"For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh..." — Galatians 5:17 (KJV)

Every day, we make a choice:
    ✓Emotion or wisdom?
    ✓Instinct or conviction?
    ✓Immediate comfort or lasting purpose?

The tragedy is not that we feel these emotions. The tragedy is when we allow them to lead us.

Fear can stop a dream. Pride can destroy a relationship. Anger can ruin years of trust. Envy can rob us of gratitude. Laziness can silently steal our potential.
    Yet there is hope.

Victory begins the moment we pause and ask: "Am I responding from purpose or reacting from impulse?"

You are not powerless. You were designed to live intentionally, not instinctively.

    Reflection Question
Which emotion currently has the strongest influence over your decisions: anger, fear, envy, pride, greed, lust, or laziness?

  • Dear Father,

There is an attribute the natural man rarely pays attention to, perhaps because the cost seems to outweigh the benefits, and because, unlike the pursuit of material things, this one requires mastery: efforts consistently applied until not just the man, but heaven and earth themselves, testify that he has gained mastery over himself. One of the greatest achievements a man can attain in his lifetime is self-mastery.

I came across a passage in Scripture which says, “Encourage the young men to be self-controlled.” The very mention of self-control can feel restrictive, in how the subject “anger management” might first seem like a more relatable substitute.

Yet self-control cuts across all spheres of our lives: in the unrestricted and uncontrolled reach of our appetites; the borderless and unsettling freedom of our sexual desires; the unguarded indulgence in sleep; the silence of prayerlessness and the neglect of spiritual hunger; the habit of postponement; and the absence of commitment to a worthy course. Father, I could send a list full of related cases, and even a library may not be enough.

So the question lingers on my mind: how much of all these do we take into consideration? Yet one of the greatest attainments of a man is found in the mastery he has over himself.
