• John 14:

    "1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
    2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
    3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
    4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
    5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?
    6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
    7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
    8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
    9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
    10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
    11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.
    12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
    13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
    14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
    15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
    16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
    17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
    18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
    19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
    20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
    21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
    22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
    23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
    24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.
    25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.
    26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
    27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
    28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
    29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.
    30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
    31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence."

  • Ellen G. White
    Christ’s Representative “Divested of the Personality of Humanity”
    One of Ellen G. White’s most discussed statements appears in The Desire of Ages, p. 669.2:

    “The Holy Spirit is Christ’s representative, **but divested of the personality of humanity, and independent thereof. Cumbered with humanity, Christ could not be in every place personally. Therefore it was altogether for their advantage that He should leave them, go to His Father, and send the Spirit to be His successor on earth. No one could then have any advantage because of his location or his personal contact with Christ. By the Spirit the Saviour would be accessible to all. In this sense He would be nearer to them than if He had not ascended on high.”

    Notice carefully what Ellen White does—and does not—say.

    She does not say Christ was divested of His humanity. Scripture teaches that Jesus remains the God-man after His resurrection (Luke 24:39; Acts 1:11; 1 Timothy 2:5). Rather, she says the Holy Spirit is Christ’s representative, “divested of the personality of humanity.”

    During His earthly ministry, Jesus willingly accepted the limitations of humanity. He could only be in one place at one time. He walked, slept, grew weary, wept, groaned, and suffered. Because He was “cumbered with humanity,” His personal presence was localized.

    The Gospels repeatedly reveal this human experience.

    At Lazarus’ tomb:

    “He groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.” (John 11:33)

    Again:

    “Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave.” (John 11:38)

    Before His betrayal:

    “Jesus… was troubled in spirit.” (John 13:21)

    As He anticipated Calvary:

    “Now is my soul troubled.” (John 12:27)

    When confronted by unbelieving Pharisees:

    “He sighed deeply in his spirit.” (Mark 8:12)

    These passages reveal Christ’s genuine humanity. He experienced sorrow, grief, compassion, disappointment, and holy anguish. His spirit was deeply moved by sin, death, unbelief, betrayal, and the coming sacrifice of the cross.

    After completing His earthly ministry, dying, rising again, and ascending to the Father, Christ no longer remained personally present with every believer on earth. As He Himself promised, He would send “another Comforter.”

    In John’s Gospel, the word translated Comforter is the Greek paraklētos (παράκλητος), occurring four times:
    • John 14:16
    • John 14:26
    • John 15:26
    • John 16:7

    The same Greek word appears once more in another context:

    “And if any man sin, we have an Advocate (paraklētos) with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” (1 John 2:1)

    Thus, paraklētos is translated Comforter in the Gospel of John and Advocate in 1 John. The word carries the idea of one who comes alongside to help, comfort, encourage, counsel, intercede, or represent another.

    Ellen White explains that after Christ’s ascension, the Holy Spirit became Christ’s representative on earth—not limited by the physical locality of His glorified human body. Through the Spirit, Christ is present with every believer regardless of geography.

    This harmonizes with Christ’s own promise:

    “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” (John 14:18)

    And:

    “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” (Matthew 28:20)

    Christ ministers today in heaven as our High Priest and Advocate before the Father (Hebrews 8:1; 1 John 2:1), while through the Holy Spirit His presence reaches every believer on earth. In this way, as Ellen White wrote, “the Saviour would be accessible to all,” and “in this sense He would be nearer to them than if He had not ascended on high.”

    The life of Christ demonstrates the perfect union of divine love and genuine humanity. His groaning, His tears, His troubled spirit, and His suffering reveal that He fully entered into the human experience. Yet after His ascension, because His personal human presence is no longer confined to one location, He ministers to His people everywhere through the Holy Spirit, His representative, “divested of the personality of humanity.”

    The Dearest on Earth to Me

    By John Thiel,

    Scripture reading: Luke 8:20 And it was told him [by certain] which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. 21 And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

    I have a Friend so precious,
    So very dear to me,
    He loves me with such tender love,
    He loves so faithfully;
    I could not live apart from Him,
    I love to feel Him nigh,
    And so we dwell together, My Lord and I.

    You want to remember those words of song while we contemplate the word of God, because we want to make those words real, and not only wonderful poetic fancy. In my experience over the years, I have found that people sing hymns and their lives are not in harmony with those very hymns they sing. This is where the scripture comes to my mind: They draw nigh unto Me with their mouth, but their heart is far from Me. May this not be our case.

    It is with great deliberation that I now share this message with you. Do you know of someone of the past, or the present, with whom you have bonded into a relationship of perfect harmony, a relationship that filled your soul with absolute comfort? Have you ever had someone so close to you that understands you, and whom you understand; a precious bond? The description of such a friendship is expressed in the experience of David and Jonathan:

    1 Samuel 18:1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

    Here was a soul knit with the soul of another. Such was this love that when Jonathan was slain in battle, the lament of David was very great.

    A Relationship Higher Than Romantic Love

    2 Samuel 1:25 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, [thou wast] slain in thine high places. 26 I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women. 27 How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!

    Here is a love that we want to explore, a love which is far higher than the experience of romantic love between a man and a woman, even higher than the ordinary marital relationship of husband and wife. There was a relationship there between Jonathan and David which was very pleasant, a relationship of which David could say, Thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women, passing that romantic love.

    As we seek to explore this love, let me read to you a non-rhyming poem under the term of friendship. This is somewhat an expression of the love that may have been between Jonathan and David:

    Even when we are apart, we are together;
    We have a special kind of communication
    That needs few words and little time;
    We have a rare understanding that has grown strong enough over years
    To weather long silences and distant partings, and still continue to grow.
    We’ve been through a lot together,
    And I guess that’s why we are the kind of friends we are,
    The kind who understand each other without need for promises.
    Our friendship has meant so much to me;
    It’s filled my life in so many ways no other friendship ever could.
    We have that kind of friendship
    That has grown over much time and many shared moments,
    The kind of friendship that will last forever.

    The Dearest on Earth to Me

    Do you ever yearn for a friend like that? to have someone with whom you can have a friendship of this calibre, where there is absolute satisfaction, absolute comfort, nothing left to have to try to do to make that person love you? Interestingly, if you were to see two people in that kind of relationship, would you be jealous? Because there is something really special about those two, and you might think, It’s just not fair; I wished I had something like that.

    Throughout my years of experience, indeed, I have found that jealousy is very rampant around us when someone has something that another person doesn’t have. But there is no need to be jealous of such a demonstration of friendship. Every human being may bask with one such a friend. That which the heart yearns for, a friendship of such a calibre, everyone can have. Everyone can have such a friend.

    A Friendship above Familial Ties

    Consider carefully the following words, which are a direct reference to a friend that could be yours and that is possible to have:

    Proverbs 18:24 …there is a friend [that] sticketh closer than a brother.

    There is such a person. There is a friendship available to all of us, a friendship that is of a calibre that is closer than someone who is a very warm brother to me. This person who sticketh closer than a brother is speaking in the following words. Speaking to His disciples, Jesus said:

    John 15:15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

    I call you friends, He says; and I want to share with you, to make known to you, something that is very dear to Me and that I have with My Father. How much? “All things that I have heard of My Father I have made known unto you.” What a friendship.

    John 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and [that] your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

    Here is a relationship invitation that is extended to every human being, if they will but receive this Friend. And the closeness that this Friend proposes to you and me is marvellously expressed below. He can be a friend to you, to me, and to everyone else, as though you were the only one that He was a friend to.

    As If You Were the Only One

    Every soul is as fully known to Jesus as if he were the only one for whom the Saviour died. {DA 480.1}

    As we continue to proceed through this message, please, open your heart to this relationship that is here being brought before our mind. The intimacy with us that He is offering us is of such a nature, so intimate, that you feel you are the only one who has that relationship with Him, and nobody else can have it. And yet, you know that the other person also has it who does the same thing as you with Him.

    He cares for each one as if there were not another on the face of the earth. {Ibid.}

    That belongs to you; it belongs to me, if I will open my heart to this. He cares for me, He cares for you, as if there were not another on the face of the earth. He is a very, very special Friend—the dearest on earth to me.

    But then Jesus left the earth, and He is now in heaven. But, as we read, in this friendship, even when we are apart we are together. This friendship is something that is there even if we are separated.

    Though now He has ascended to the presence of God, and shares the throne of the universe, Jesus has lost none of His compassionate nature. Today the same tender, sympathizing heart is open to all the woes of humanity. {DA 480.5}

    Still bearing in mind that He knows you and cares for you as if you were the only one.

    Today the hand that was pierced is reached forth to bless more abundantly His people that are in the world. … He will never abandon one for whom He has died. Unless His followers choose to leave Him, He will hold them fast. {Ibid.}

    Look at His Friendship

    Through all our trials we have a never-failing Helper. He does not leave us alone to struggle with temptation, to battle with evil, and be finally crushed with burdens and sorrow. {DA 483.1}

    He does not leave us alone in this experience.

    Though now He is hidden from mortal sight, the ear of faith can hear His voice saying, Fear not; I am with you. {Ibid.}

    The ear of faith can hear Him say that. People have said to me, But this is not somebody that I can touch and handle; I need somebody I can handle and experience. Well, the ear of faith can hear.

    …the ear of faith can hear His voice saying, Fear not; I am with you. “I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore.” Revelation 1:18. {Ibid.}

    Look at His friendship:

    I have endured your sorrows, experienced your struggles, encountered your temptations. I know your tears; I also have wept. {Ibid.}

    Can you see the friendship here? He is offering this to us. Look at the friendship:

    The griefs that lie too deep to be breathed into any human ear, I know. Think not that you are desolate and forsaken. Though your pain touch no responsive chord in any heart on earth, look unto Me, and live. {Ibid.}

    What a Friend. Do you want a friend like that? There is such a friend who sticketh closer than a brother. This is closer; can you see? Even things which are so precious and inwardly my own experience, He knows, and I can talk with Him about that. This is someone you can handle; this is someone you can see; this is someone you can hear. I don’t ever want us to feel that we need someone else. He is there. It is called atonement—at-one-ment. How intimate can it be? How intimate can this Friend be? You see, Jesus became a human on earth in order for you and me to find a Friend especially for me, a personal Friend—the Dearest on earth to me—who specifically came down for that purpose.

    Notice how He now talks to us in reference to the intimacy that is actually someone who sticks closer than a brother, closer than a human, earthly friend. We read in our poem of a friendship that has grown and is eternal; but no human being can get as close as Jesus.

    No Human Being Can Get as Close as Jesus

    Here is our Friend praying; He says:

    John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 [Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him:

    Interesting language, isn’t it? They can’t accept this kind of friend, this kind of comforter, because they can’t see Him. “Give me somebody I can see! Give me somebody I can embrace! Give me somebody that is physically there!” The world cannot receive Him because they see Him not, neither know Him;

    John 14:17 …but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

    Notice what He now says in the next breath:

    John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

    I will pray for another Comforter, says He, but when He comes, it’s Me coming to you; because where one is, the other is also.

    How Intimate Can It Be?

    How close? No human being can get inside of your skin; but this Person can. He is not only with you, but in you. At the time when He spoke those words, Jesus was with the disciples, but they had not yet received the full impact of the Holy Spirit. So He says, He shall be in you. How intimate is that? A Friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

    John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

    Would you like a friend that lives with you continually, all the time? That’s Jesus. The Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, these are able to come into us and make their above with us, so that wherever I am abiding, they are abiding with me. This is what you call a bosom pal. What is a bosom pal? He is in my bosom; He is right there.

    The more the eye looks upon Him, the more His life, His lessons, His perfection of character are studied, the more sinful and abhorrent will sin appear. By beholding, man can but admire and become more attracted to Him, more charmed, and more desirous to be like Jesus until he assimilates to His image and has the mind of Christ. Like Enoch he walks with God. His mind is full of thoughts of Jesus. He is his best Friend. {8MR 182.3}

    He is his best Friend, a bosom pal. So close that He is in my bosom. Having contemplated this reality in God’s word now, I ask you the question: Is Jesus the dearest on earth to you? Is He your best Friend, a personal Saviour?

    Is Jesus the Dearest on Earth to You?

    Look how extensively He proposes to relate with you. Look at the further detail of this. He is a Friend who doesn’t want you to become distracted from Him. He says:

    Luke 14:26 If any Manuhe Seyoum come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

    In other words, He can’t be My friend. Remember, He said to the disciples, You are My friends, because I share all the intimacies of the Father with you. The marginal reading renders it: “If any man come to Me, and hate not by comparison his father, etc.” In other words, “Which one will you love more: Me, or mother, father, wife, children, brethren, sisters, or your own life also?” You are here beginning to see an intimacy that is solicited by Jesus and which makes Him definitely the dearest on earth to you.

    The expression in Matthew explains this meaning of hating in comparison:

    Matthew 10:37 He that loveth father or mother [and all the other ones] more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

    He wants a friendship, and He does not want you and me to have someone better than Him in that friendship. This is why it says, If any man hate not his father, and mother, etc. He is saying: If you, in comparison to the love that you have to Me, have someone over Me that you are going to have a friendship with over Me, then My friendship is not possible. In other words, you see here that He is craving for a closer relationship with you than you might have with anyone else on earth.

    The Intimacy Solicited By Jesus

    A jealous person once said to me: That person just has to crook their finger and you jump. What does Jesus have to do for you to jump to His attention?

    John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

    He just has to intimate His will, and you are His friend, His bosom friend. And He is your friend, you love Him dearly; He just has to suggest with a movement of an eye, and you jump. This is normal for us. We would do anything for someone we love. Wouldn’t we? Children, if you love your mom and dad, and they say, Please, do this; do you say, Oh, I don’t want to? Or do you say, Yes, of course, I love you, Mommy, I love you, Daddy; anything you say. That is friendship. And Jesus wants to be your friend.

    Jesus says, I stick closer to you than a brother. He is saying to you now, I lay down My life for you. What else could He have done to win my friendship? He laid down His life for me? He says, Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

    Just do everything God says. It doesn’t matter what anyone else says. He is my friend! This is the Dearest on earth to me. In fact, as you stop to think for a moment, it says He laid down His life for me. He wants to be my friend, and what did He do? He left heaven; He left the joys of the friendship of the angels; He left everything, His throne, His position, to come down and become my friend. Who has given the greatest sacrifice in that friendship?

    …that love … led Christ to leave His heavenly home and take man’s nature that humanity might touch humanity and draw humanity to divinity. {COL 303.1}

    So that divinity becomes your best Friend. Let’s wake up. When it comes to challenges in my life, and Jesus says this, but my flesh and my friends says that, my mother and my father and my children say something different, what am I going to do? Is there much of a battle? Not when you realise that this Friend gave up everything to be my Friend. He who has done the greatest wants to be my Friend.

    Is This My Friend?

    Therefore my heart begins to pulsate within me as I open my heart to these thoughts of His communication. My heart becomes His. And the description of this kind of friendship because of what He has done to win my friendship, is given in beautiful detail here in the following quote. This is the question now: Is this my friend? Am I prepared to have such a relationship with Him?

    Who has the heart? With whom are our thoughts? {SC 58.2}

    Where are my thoughts? With my best Friend? or with everything else that distracts me?

    Of whom do we love to converse? {Ibid.}

    What am I talking about? What do I love to converse on?

    Who has our warmest affections and our best energies? {Ibid.}

    Can you see? Our affections are to take pre-eminence to Him, not to anyone or anything else. He has my warmest affections, my best energies.

    If we are Christ’s [if we are His friends], our thoughts are with Him, and our sweetest thoughts are of Him. All we have and are is consecrated to Him. We long to bear His image, breathe His spirit, do His will, and please Him in all things. {Ibid.}

    This reminds me of that statement of the Spirit of Prophecy which says that God has a preference in regard to the way I dress (Evangelism, p. 268.3). Do I want to please Him? How do I dress? Do I follow exactly what pleases Him in the way I dress? You see, He wants to be my Friend. And I am absolutely enthralled with His love, Look what He has done to unite with me; and now He just has to crook His finger, and I jump. This is the Dearest on earth to me.

    Commonly this language “the dearest on earth to me” is a term applied solely to a marriage. The thought is that: No one else shares the unity on earth like me and my wife have, or me and my children. But stop for a moment. If marriage is contracted in Jesus, and children are born in the relationship with Jesus, then indeed, because Jesus is the Dearest on earth to me, then the Jesus that is in my wife and in my family makes my family the dearest on earth. True enough.

    The presence of Christ alone can make men and women happy. {AH 28.1}

    You know what it’s like. In the family, if Jesus isn’t there, are we happy with each other? The presence of Christ alone can make men and women happy.

    All the common waters of life Christ can turn into the wine of heaven. {Ibid.}

    If Jesus is in the common activities of life with me, then it all becomes the wine of heaven.

    A Symbol of the Family in Heaven

    The home then becomes as an Eden of bliss; the family, a beautiful symbol of the family in heaven. {Ibid.}

    If Jesus is first and foremost, my best friend on earth, then in my relationship with my family, with my children, if it is in Jesus, we have a symbol on earth that is a symbol of the family in heaven. This takes us into something very interesting in the study of God’s word.

    If the husband, the father in the house, has Jesus as his dearest friend on earth; if the wife, the mother, has Jesus as the very dearest person on earth to her; and if the children have Jesus as the very dearest friend on earth, can you imagine the bliss? Indeed, the home becomes as an Eden.

    You Can Have a Personal Friend

    But it is a sad story in the time in which we live, that such a thing seems to have evaded the human race today in the churches. The Spirit of Prophecy tells us that this is a very rare thing today. And if we don’t have that blessed thing of a family like that, never mind, you can have a personal Friend.

    Now, as in Christ’s day, the condition of society presents a sad comment upon heaven’s ideal of this sacred relation. {MB 65.2}

    Can’t we all testify of it?

    Yet even for those who have found bitterness and disappointment where they had hoped for companionship and joy, {Ibid.}

    Can you take your thoughts back to when you first found your marriage partner? You were thinking, Oh, wonderful! This is going to be wonderful. You had hoped for precious unity, and you became bitterly disappointed. This is the story of today.

    Yet even for those who have found bitterness and disappointment where they had hoped for companionship and joy, the gospel of Christ offers a solace. {Ibid.}

    What is the solace?

    The patience and gentleness which His Spirit can impart will sweeten the bitter lot. {Ibid.}

    Remember the other Comforter that Jesus spoke of. He is going to bring that beautiful relationship of the friendship of Jesus to me. So although I am missing out on that beautiful relationship that I anticipated in my marriage, I have it in Jesus. Remember, He makes our abode with us:

    The heart in which Christ dwells will be so filled, so satisfied, with His love that it will not be consumed with longing to attract sympathy and attention to itself. And through the surrender of the soul to God, His wisdom can accomplish what human wisdom fails to do. Through the revelation of His grace, hearts that were once indifferent or estranged may be united in bonds that are firmer and more enduring than those of earth—the golden bonds of a love that will bear the test of trial. {Ibid.}

    This is if the family is still together and they can work together in Jesus. In that case it can be recovered. But sadly, today there are many that cannot be recovered.

    Heaven’s Source of Companionship

    This takes us now into the gospel reality. The gospel can make Jesus my dearest Friend; and you will thus find the family that marriage is a symbol of. What is the family that marriage is a symbol of? Consider the union of heaven’s source of companionship.

    I often shake my head when I see people using scripture as a theory and not as a living reality. Consider this thought of a comfort of a friendship and closeness that is here portrayed as the family in heaven:

    1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

    Can you hear the argument: “No; there’s no such thing as three in the Godhead. No, no.” This is a lot of waste of time. Here is a reality that there are three beings in heaven who are so intimate with one another that they are one. That’s all it is saying. That is the family of heaven. And that family of heaven wanted to share their joy and unity with other creatures, so they created. And the marriage is to be a symbol of the family of heaven. Let us contemplate this a little more closely.

    1 John 4:16 God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

    This tells you something. If God were on His own, could He be love? Three beings who love one another, that is God. They love one another in a manner which Jesus wants to convey to us. Let us think upon the following words of Jesus:

    John 10:30 I and [my] Father are one.

    The Holy Spirit, which proceeds from the only begotten Son of God, binds the human agent, body, soul, and spirit, to the perfect, divine-human nature of Christ. This union is represented by the union of the vine and the branches. Finite man is united to the manhood of Christ. Through faith human nature is assimilated with Christ’s nature. We are made one with God in Christ. {RH, April 5, 1906 par. 16}

    We are talking about an intimate friendship. Through the Holy Spirit, by faith, our human nature is actually assimilated with Christ’s nature.

    I Want Them to Have That Love

    John 17:26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare [it]: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

    This is the friendship; this is what Jesus was praying for. And through the Holy Spirit, through our faith in this work, the human nature becomes assimilated with Christ’s nature, and we are made one with God in Christ.

    If Jesus is the dearest on earth to me in the way that we have here expanded it, and I take hold of that which is available to us as individuals and as families to follow the family of heaven in symbol, we now come to the prayer of Jesus where every individual who has chosen to receive this friendship is included. If you choose to accept this friendship; if you make it as your own as the preeminent friendship over everyone else, and you receive Jesus as the dearest on earth to you; if every individual is so bound to Christ, what will he find others in in that assimilation? If I am assimilated with Him, and another person is assimilated with Jesus too, and another person also, what do you get? Can you see in this prayer Jesus’ desire for our friendship?

    John 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am;

    He wants my friendship here on earth so that He can have me with Him in heaven. I pray, says He,

    John 17:24 …that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

    What is the glory that we are to behold there? The love of God. God is love. He says, I want them to have that beautiful love that we had and have together.

    John 17:22 And the glory [the love] which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: 23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

    Can you see something now? The dearest on earth to me is Jesus. If I have really opened my friend so fully to Him, and my brothers and sisters have done the same thing, the same person who is dearest to me on earth is dearest to them on earth. And as we engage in this intimacy with Jesus, what is the natural outcome with each other? You and I will become the dearest on earth to each other, because the same Jesus in you is in me. And can the Jesus in one quarrel with the Jesus in the other? No. This is our privilege. Jesus prayed, I want them to have the unity that You and I have, Father; I want to be to them a friend that sticketh closer than a brother; I want to have them experience our unity, so that they can experience it in heaven in eternity.

    Christ desires His soldiers to stand shoulder to shoulder, united in the work of fighting the battles of the cross. He desires the union between those who work for Him to be as close as the union between Him and His Father. Those who have felt the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit will heed the lessons of the divine Instructor, and will show their sincerity by doing all in their power to work in harmony with their brethren. {UL 366.3}

    He desires the union between those who work for Him to be as close as the union between Him and His Father. The union that Jesus is praying for in John 17 is expressed also in the following quote from the Spirit of Prophecy. Follow the privilege of the intimacy that is ours to have.

    Unlimited Intimate Friendship

    Talking about Jesus’ prayer for us to experience this love and unity, it says:

    This request of Christ has no limit to its fulness. {RH, November 3, 1896 par. 3}

    Can you imagine? This is infinite. An intimacy, a relationship of intimate friendship that has no limit to its fullness?

    He desires that his followers shall reveal to the world his spirit of unity and love. {Ibid.}

    But what has to happen for this to be a reality? We are reading here something that is ideal. We might think, If only we had this… Have we experienced this? There is always something that stops this. Here comes the direction:

    Answering the Prayer for Oneness

    But before this unity can exist among them, there must be a genuine renovation of every heart; there must be a vital connection with God; the character must be formed after the divine similitude. {Ibid.}

    In other words, my personal relationship with Jesus must be such that He is the dearest on earth to me and I am prepared to do whatever He says, to follow through with my relationship with Him at all costs. And as you and I do this, what will happen to our relationship? We will have an unlimited joy of friendship together; and the world will look on and say, This is unreal. But this is how the world will know that Jesus has been sent. This is what He said. This is real; it is not unreal. It can happen. But it depends on our choices, whether we will actually make Him the very dearest on earth to us.

    Those who are drinking from the same fountain of blessing will draw nearer together. Truth dwelling in the hearts of believers will lead to blessed and happy assimilation. Thus will be answered the prayer of Christ that His disciples might be one even as He is one with the Father. For this oneness every truly converted heart will be striving. {FLB 343.2}

    How do we strive for this unity? By making Jesus my best friend on earth. And as we do this with resolve, with an intensity of choice and decision to make Him the very best friend in my life, this is how we will answer the prayer of Jesus for us to be one together.

    The Final Joy of This Intimacy

    That beautiful intimacy we can have here will then usher us into that intimacy in eternity.

    There the redeemed shall “know, even as also they are known.” The loves and sympathies which God Himself has planted in the soul shall there find truest and sweetest exercise. {AH 544.1}

    There is no limit to the precious union that we can have. But there are certain dangers here on earth, because if people look at you and you have an intimacy together with me that is of this unlimited nature, we have to be careful. The loves that God has planted in our hearts we have to sometimes be very careful how we express to each other. I have learned that lesson the bitter way. We can have an understanding between us that does not always need to be shown and expressed. In other words, I feel like giving you a hug sometimes, but if you are a woman, I won’t do it, because it will be misunderstood. But many times I wished I could give you a hug. But no. I have made some mistakes on that before. I had this beautiful concept of love, and I felt the love of the other person, so I can them a hug; and I got into trouble. You may sometimes wonder, Why doesn’t John show me a little bit more affection? This is the reason. But I love you dearly if you love my Jesus like I do.

    But there, when we get to heaven, there we will exercise the intimacy of this love like we could not do here on earth. The loves and sympathies which God Himself has planted in the soul shall there find truest and sweetest exercise. Reach out for that time if you have to hold back certain amounts of exercise here. But you know we’ve got it; we love each other.

    Who Are My Brethren?

    Those people who do what Jesus says, what are they to Him, and what is He to them?

    Matthew 12:46 While he yet talked to the people, behold, Phillip Kotze mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. 47 Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. 48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?

    In other words, Who are the dearest on earth to me?

    Matthew 12:49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

    These are the dearest on earth to Me, He says. They are the body of Christ. They are one body.

    I wish to make an appeal today: Do you at times feel lonely? I will never forget the words of one brother many years ago. He said to me, I don’t like you preaching “I’m never alone”, because I feel alone. There is an appeal in this message. When I feel alone, when I feel lonely, what must I do? I must cross the barrier between me and Christ. There is a barrier there. This is why I feel lonely. When I am looking for comfort in everything else but Jesus, there is a barrier between me and Him. For us to enjoy this kind of unity that has been evading us in this company for many, many years, we are called upon to cross the barrier that still exists between me and Christ, between me and His body.

    The Inner Circle

    Of His disciples during His life on earth, Jesus said, These are my mother, my brother, and my sister. They were the inner circle.

    Whenever He spoke to the multitude, the disciples formed the inner circle. They pressed close beside Him, that they might lose nothing of His instruction. {CG 295.1}

    That’s it. They are looking for every crook of His finger to not miss a single part of His instruction. This is the inner circle. So when I feel alone, I must enter into the intimacy with Jesus and break down the barrier that exists between me and Him, and that may exist between me and my brothers and sisters. Directly in relation to the inner circle, there also comes to us the following statement. I received such rebuff by those claiming to be my family when I preached this in the past:

    The unity, the harmony, that should exist among the disciples of Christ is described in these words: “That they may be one, as we are.” But how many there are who draw off and seem to think that they have learned all they need to learn. {TMK 172.2}

    You see, there is the barrier.

    Those who choose to stand on the outskirts of the camp cannot know what is going on in the inner circle. They must come right into the inner courts, for as a people we must be united in faith and purpose. . . . It is through this unity that we are to convince the world of the mission of Christ, and bear our divine credentials to the world. {Ibid.}

    What is God’s church? The Adventist Church? The independent companies? Which one is it? Where are the credentials? The credentials are demonstrated by the unity as it is in Jesus, the friendship we have with Him. This is what it says. Get into the inner circle. Break the barriers. It is through this unity that we are to convince the world of the mission of Christ, and bear our divine credentials to the world. We don’t have to say, This is God’s church. We will bear the credentials.

    The golden chain of love, binding the hearts of the believers in unity, in bonds of fellowship and love, and in oneness with Christ and the Father, makes the connection perfect, and bears to the world a testimony of the power of Christianity that cannot be controverted. {TMK 173.2}

    Do you feel lonely and alone? If you will practice this message that I have shared with you, you will never feel lonely again; and we will be a company that bears the divine credentials.

    Amen.
    Daily Sermons #10 The Dearest on Earth to Me By John Thiel, Scripture reading: Luke 8:20 And it was told him [by certain] which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. 21 And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it. I have a Friend so precious, So very dear to me, He loves me with such tender love, He loves so faithfully; I could not live apart from Him, I love to feel Him nigh, And so we dwell together, My Lord and I. The description of such a friendship is expressed in the experience of David and Jonathan: 1 Samuel 18:1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Here was a soul knit with the soul of another. Such was this love that when Jonathan was slain in battle, the lament of David was very great. A Relationship Higher Than Romantic Love 2 Samuel 1:25 How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! This is somewhat an expression of the love that may have been between Jonathan and David: Even when we are apart, we are together; We have a special kind of communication That needs few words and little time; We have a rare understanding that has grown strong enough over years To weather long silences and distant partings, and still continue to grow. We’ve been through a lot together, And I guess that’s why we are the kind of friends we are, The kind who understand each other without need for promises. Our friendship has meant so much to me; It’s filled my life in so many ways no other friendship ever could. We have that kind of friendship That has grown over much time and many shared moments, The kind of friendship that will last forever. The Dearest on Earth to Me Do you ever yearn for a friend like that? to have someone with whom you can have a friendship of this calibre, where there is absolute satisfaction, absolute comfort, nothing left to have to try to do to make that person love you? Interestingly, if you were to see two people in that kind of relationship, would you be jealous? Because there is something really special about those two, and you might think, It’s just not fair; I wished I had something like that. Throughout my years of experience, indeed, I have found that jealousy is very rampant around us when someone has something that another person doesn’t have. But there is no need to be jealous of such a demonstration of friendship. Every human being may bask with one such a friend. That which the heart yearns for, a friendship of such a calibre, everyone can have. Everyone can have such a friend. A Friendship above Familial Ties Consider carefully the following words, which are a direct reference to a friend that could be yours and that is possible to have: Proverbs 18:24 …there is a friend [that] sticketh closer than a brother. There is such a person. There is a friendship available to all of us, a friendship that is of a calibre that is closer than someone who is a very warm brother to me. This person who sticketh closer than a brother is speaking in the following words. Speaking to His disciples, Jesus said: John 15:15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. As If You Were the Only One Every soul is as fully known to Jesus as if he were the only one for whom the Saviour died. {DA 480.1} As we continue to proceed through this message, please, open your heart to this relationship that is here being brought before our mind. The intimacy with us that He is offering us is of such a nature, so intimate, that you feel you are the only one who has that relationship with Him, and nobody else can have it. And yet, you know that the other person also has it who does the same thing as you with Him. He cares for each one as if there were not another on the face of the earth. {Ibid.} That belongs to you; it belongs to me, if I will open my heart to this. Though now He has ascended to the presence of God, and shares the throne of the universe, Jesus has lost none of His compassionate nature. Today the same tender, sympathizing heart is open to all the woes of humanity. {DA 480.5} Still bearing in mind that He knows you and cares for you as if you were the only one. Today the hand that was pierced is reached forth to bless more abundantly His people that are in the world. … He will never abandon one for whom He has died. Unless His followers choose to leave Him, He will hold them fast. {Ibid.} Look at His Friendship Through all our trials we have a never-failing Helper. He does not leave us alone to struggle with temptation, to battle with evil, and be finally crushed with burdens and sorrow. {DA 483.1} He does not leave us alone in this experience. Though now He is hidden from mortal sight, the ear of faith can hear His voice saying, Fear not; I am with you. {Ibid.} The ear of faith can hear Him say that. People have said to me, But this is not somebody that I can touch and handle; I need somebody I can handle and experience. Well, the ear of faith can hear. …the ear of faith can hear His voice saying, Fear not; I am with you. “I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore.” Revelation 1:18. {Ibid.} Look at His friendship: I have endured your sorrows, experienced your struggles, encountered your temptations. I know your tears; I also have wept. {Ibid.} Can you see the friendship here? He is offering this to us. Look at the friendship: The griefs that lie too deep to be breathed into any human ear, I know. Think not that you are desolate and forsaken. Though your pain touch no responsive chord in any heart on earth, look unto Me, and live. {Ibid.} What a Friend. No Human Being Can Get as Close as Jesus Here is our Friend praying; He says: John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 [Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: Interesting language, isn’t it? They can’t accept this kind of friend, this kind of comforter, because they can’t see Him. “Give me somebody I can see! Give me somebody I can embrace! Give me somebody that is physically there!” The world cannot receive Him because they see Him not, neither know Him; John 14:17 …but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. Notice what He now says in the next breath: John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. The more the eye looks upon Him, the more His life, His lessons, His perfection of character are studied, the more sinful and abhorrent will sin appear. By beholding, man can but admire and become more attracted to Him, more charmed, and more desirous to be like Jesus until he assimilates to His image and has the mind of Christ. Like Enoch he walks with God. His mind is full of thoughts of Jesus. He is his best Friend. {8MR 182.3} He is his best Friend, a bosom pal. He says: Luke 14:26 If any [man] come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. The expression in Matthew explains this meaning of hating in comparison: Matthew 10:37 He that loveth father or mother [and all the other ones] more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. The Intimacy Solicited By Jesus A jealous person once said to me: That person just has to crook their finger and you jump. …that love … led Christ to leave His heavenly home and take man’s nature that humanity might touch humanity and draw humanity to divinity. {COL 303.1} So that divinity becomes your best Friend. Who has the heart? With whom are our thoughts? {SC 58.2} Where are my thoughts? With my best Friend? or with everything else that distracts me? Of whom do we love to converse? {Ibid.} What am I talking about? What do I love to converse on? Who has our warmest affections and our best energies? {Ibid.} Can you see? Our affections are to take pre-eminence to Him, not to anyone or anything else. He has my warmest affections, my best energies. If we are Christ’s [if we are His friends], our thoughts are with Him, and our sweetest thoughts are of Him. All we have and are is consecrated to Him. We long to bear His image, breathe His spirit, do His will, and please Him in all things. {Ibid.} This reminds me of that statement of the Spirit of Prophecy which says that God has a preference in regard to the way I dress (Evangelism, p. The presence of Christ alone can make men and women happy. {AH 28.1} You know what it’s like. In the family, if Jesus isn’t there, are we happy with each other? The presence of Christ alone can make men and women happy. All the common waters of life Christ can turn into the wine of heaven. {Ibid.} If Jesus is in the common activities of life with me, then it all becomes the wine of heaven. A Symbol of the Family in Heaven The home then becomes as an Eden of bliss; the family, a beautiful symbol of the family in heaven. {Ibid.} If Jesus is first and foremost, my best friend on earth, then in my relationship with my family, with my children, if it is in Jesus, we have a symbol on earth that is a symbol of the family in heaven. You Can Have a Personal Friend But it is a sad story in the time in which we live, that such a thing seems to have evaded the human race today in the churches. The Spirit of Prophecy tells us that this is a very rare thing today. And if we don’t have that blessed thing of a family like that, never mind, you can have a personal Friend. Now, as in Christ’s day, the condition of society presents a sad comment upon heaven’s ideal of this sacred relation. {MB 65.2} Can’t we all testify of it? Yet even for those who have found bitterness and disappointment where they had hoped for companionship and joy, {Ibid.} Can you take your thoughts back to when you first found your marriage partner? You were thinking, Oh, wonderful! This is going to be wonderful. You had hoped for precious unity, and you became bitterly disappointed. This is the story of today. Yet even for those who have found bitterness and disappointment where they had hoped for companionship and joy, the gospel of Christ offers a solace. {Ibid.} What is the solace? The patience and gentleness which His Spirit can impart will sweeten the bitter lot. {Ibid.} Remember the other Comforter that Jesus spoke of. He is going to bring that beautiful relationship of the friendship of Jesus to me. So although I am missing out on that beautiful relationship that I anticipated in my marriage, I have it in Jesus. Remember, He makes our abode with us: The heart in which Christ dwells will be so filled, so satisfied, with His love that it will not be consumed with longing to attract sympathy and attention to itself. And through the surrender of the soul to God, His wisdom can accomplish what human wisdom fails to do. Through the revelation of His grace, hearts that were once indifferent or estranged may be united in bonds that are firmer and more enduring than those of earth—the golden bonds of a love that will bear the test of trial. {Ibid.} This is if the family is still together and they can work together in Jesus. In that case it can be recovered. But sadly, today there are many that cannot be recovered. Heaven’s Source of Companionship This takes us now into the gospel reality. The gospel can make Jesus my dearest Friend; and you will thus find the family that marriage is a symbol of. What is the family that marriage is a symbol of? Consider the union of heaven’s source of companionship. I often shake my head when I see people using scripture as a theory and not as a living reality. Consider this thought of a comfort of a friendship and closeness that is here portrayed as the family in heaven: 1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. Let us think upon the following words of Jesus: John 10:30 I and [my] Father are one. The Holy Spirit, which proceeds from the only begotten Son of God, binds the human agent, body, soul, and spirit, to the perfect, divine-human nature of Christ. This union is represented by the union of the vine and the branches. Finite man is united to the manhood of Christ. Through faith human nature is assimilated with Christ’s nature. We are made one with God in Christ. {RH, April 5, 1906 par. 16} We are talking about an intimate friendship. Through the Holy Spirit, by faith, our human nature is actually assimilated with Christ’s nature. I Want Them to Have That Love John 17:26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare [it]: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them. John 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; He wants my friendship here on earth so that He can have me with Him in heaven. I pray, says He, John 17:24 …that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. Christ desires His soldiers to stand shoulder to shoulder, united in the work of fighting the battles of the cross. He desires the union between those who work for Him to be as close as the union between Him and His Father. Those who have felt the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit will heed the lessons of the divine Instructor, and will show their sincerity by doing all in their power to work in harmony with their brethren. {UL 366.3} He desires the union between those who work for Him to be as close as the union between Him and His Father. The union that Jesus is praying for in John 17 is expressed also in the following quote from the Spirit of Prophecy. Follow the privilege of the intimacy that is ours to have. Unlimited Intimate Friendship Talking about Jesus’ prayer for us to experience this love and unity, it says: This request of Christ has no limit to its fulness. {RH, November 3, 1896 par. 3} Can you imagine? This is infinite. An intimacy, a relationship of intimate friendship that has no limit to its fullness? He desires that his followers shall reveal to the world his spirit of unity and love. {Ibid.} But what has to happen for this to be a reality? We are reading here something that is ideal. We might think, If only we had this… Have we experienced this? There is always something that stops this. Here comes the direction: Answering the Prayer for Oneness But before this unity can exist among them, there must be a genuine renovation of every heart; there must be a vital connection with God; the character must be formed after the divine similitude. {Ibid.} In other words, my personal relationship with Jesus must be such that He is the dearest on earth to me and I am prepared to do whatever He says, to follow through with my relationship with Him at all costs. Those who are drinking from the same fountain of blessing will draw nearer together. Truth dwelling in the hearts of believers will lead to blessed and happy assimilation. Thus will be answered the prayer of Christ that His disciples might be one even as He is one with the Father. For this oneness every truly converted heart will be striving. {FLB 343.2} How do we strive for this unity? By making Jesus my best friend on earth. And as we do this with resolve, with an intensity of choice and decision to make Him the very best friend in my life, this is how we will answer the prayer of Jesus for us to be one together. The Final Joy of This Intimacy That beautiful intimacy we can have here will then usher us into that intimacy in eternity. There the redeemed shall “know, even as also they are known.” The loves and sympathies which God Himself has planted in the soul shall there find truest and sweetest exercise. {AH 544.1} There is no limit to the precious union that we can have. Matthew 12:46 While he yet talked to the people, behold, [his] mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. The Inner Circle Of His disciples during His life on earth, Jesus said, These are my mother, my brother, and my sister. They were the inner circle. Whenever He spoke to the multitude, the disciples formed the inner circle. They pressed close beside Him, that they might lose nothing of His instruction. {CG 295.1} That’s it. I received such rebuff by those claiming to be my family when I preached this in the past: The unity, the harmony, that should exist among the disciples of Christ is described in these words: “That they may be one, as we are.” But how many there are who draw off and seem to think that they have learned all they need to learn. {TMK 172.2} You see, there is the barrier. Those who choose to stand on the outskirts of the camp cannot know what is going on in the inner circle. They must come right into the inner courts, for as a people we must be united in faith and purpose. . . . It is through this unity that we are to convince the world of the mission of Christ, and bear our divine credentials to the world. {Ibid.} What is God’s church? The Adventist Church? The independent companies? Which one is it? Where are the credentials? The credentials are demonstrated by the unity as it is in Jesus, the friendship we have with Him. This is what it says. Get into the inner circle. Break the barriers. It is through this unity that we are to convince the world of the mission of Christ, and bear our divine credentials to the world. We don’t have to say, This is God’s church. We will bear the credentials. The golden chain of love, binding the hearts of the believers in unity, in bonds of fellowship and love, and in oneness with Christ and the Father, makes the connection perfect, and bears to the world a testimony of the power of Christianity that cannot be controverted. {TMK 173.2} Do you feel lonely and alone? If you will practice this message that I have shared with you, you will never feel lonely again; and we will be a company that bears the divine credentials. Amen.

    Section 5- The Holy Spirit

    CHAPTER# 42, The Holy Spirit and His Work.

    1. What precious promise did Jesus make to His disciples shortly before His crucifixion?

    "I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever." John 14:16.

    2. Who is the Comforter, and what was He to do?

    "But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you." Verse 26, R.V.

    3. Why cannot the world receive Him?

    "Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him." Verse 17.

    4. How intimate is His union with believers?

    "But ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you." Same verse.

    5. Whose presence does the Holy Spirit bring to the believers?

    "I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you." Verse 18.

    6. What promise is thus fulfilled?

    "Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world." Matt. 28:20. See also John 14:21-23.

    7. What threefold union is thus established?

    "At that day ye shall know that I am in My Father, and ye in Me, and I in you." Verse 20.

    NOTE: Rom. 8:9 shows the Spirit of each of the three persons of the Godhead to be one and the same Spirit.

    8. How does Jesus, through the Spirit, seek an entrance to every heart?

    "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me." Rev. 3:20.

    9. Why was it necessary for Christ to go away?

    "Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you." John 16:7.

    10. What was the Comforter to do when He came?

    "And when He is come, He will reprove [margin, convince] the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment." Verse 8.

    11. By what other title is the Comforter designated?

    "But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of Me." John 15:26.

    12. What did Jesus say the Spirit of truth would do?

    "Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come." John 16:13.

    NOTE: The Spirit speaks (1 Tim. 4:1); teaches (1 Cor. 2:3); bears witness (Rom. 8:16); makes intercession (Rom. 8:26); distributes the gifts (1 Cor. 12:11); and invites the sinner (Rev. 22:17).

    13. Whom did Christ say the Holy Spirit would glorify?

    "He shall glorify Me: for He shall receive of Mine, and shall show it unto you." Verse 14.

    NOTE: It is plain from these scriptures that the Holy Spirit is the personal representative of Christ upon the earth, abiding in the church by dwelling in the hearts of the believers. It follows that any attempt to make a man the vicegerent of Christ in the place of the third person of the Godhead is an attempt to put man in the place of God. Thus does the fundamental principle of the Papacy set aside the person and work of the Holy Spirit.

    14. How has God revealed to US the hidden things of the kingdom?

    "But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God." 1 Cor. 2:10.

    15. Who moved upon the prophets to give their messages?

    "For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." 2 Peter 1:21.

    16. After Pentecost, how was the gospel preached?

    "With the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven." I Peter 1:12.

    17. How are believers sealed?

    "In whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise." Eph. 1:13.

    18. What warning is therefore given?

    "Grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption." Eph. 4:30.

    19. Is there a limit to the strivings of God's Spirit?

    "And the Lord said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man." Gen. 6:3.

    NOTE: The limit is determined by the creature rather than by the Creator. It is when there is an utter abandonment to evil, and further appeals would be without avail. God foreknowing all things, may designate a definite period of probation for man, as in the case of the one hundred and twenty years before the flood (Gen. 6:3); but His Spirit never ceases to strive with man as long as there is hope of his salvation.

    20. For what did David pray?

    "Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me." Ps. 51:11.

    21. How willing is God to give to us the Holy Spirit?

    "If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him?" Luke 1:13.

    O for that flame of living fire,

    Which shone so bright in saints of old;

    Which bade their souls to heaven aspire,

    Calm in distress, in danger bold!

    Remember, Lord, the ancient days;

    Renew Thy work,

    Thy grace restore; And while to Thee our hearts we raise,

    On us Thy Holy Spirit pour.

    BIBLE QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS # 42 Section 5- The Holy Spirit CHAPTER# 42, The Holy Spirit and His Work. O for that flame of living fire, Which shone so bright in saints of old; Which bade their souls to heaven aspire, Calm in distress, in danger bold! The Truth about the Ten Commandments

    Question 1: Where are the Ten Commandments found in the Bible?

    The Ten Commandments are found in Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5.

    Question 2: What does the Bible say is the definition of sin?

    Sin is the transgression of the law, unfaithfulness, and ignoring righteousness.

    1 John 3:4 — Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

    Romans 14:23 — for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

    James 4:17 — Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

    Question 3: What does God say is the whole duty of man?

    Obedience to His Law

    Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 — Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

    Question 4: What is the only part of the Bible written directly by God Himself?

    The Ten Commandments are the only part of the Bible written directly by God Himself. Everything else in the Bible, He inspired His prophets to write. But the Ten Commandments, God wrote with His own finger in stone.

    Exodus 31:18 — And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

    Exodus 32:16 — And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

    Question 5: What blessings does God promise to those who obey His Law?

    Happiness, peace, long life, protection, and knowing God.

    Proverbs 29:18 — Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

    Psalms 119:165 — Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.

    Proverbs 3:1-2 — My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: 2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

    Deuteronomy 6:12-14, 17-18 — Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you…Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee. And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers,

    Psalms 119:117-118 — Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually. Thou hast trodden down all them that err from thy statutes: for their deceit is falsehood.

    John 14:21 — He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

    1 John 2:3 — And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

    Question 6: What is the standard God will use to judge us by?

    His Ten Commandment Law.

    Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 — Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

    James 2:8-12 — If ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

    Question 7: Can the Ten Commandments ever be changed in any way, or abolished?

    No, God’s Ten Commandment Law can never change, because God never changes.

    Luke 16:17 — And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.

    Psalms 89:34 — My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

    Psalms 111:7-8 — The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure. They stand fast for ever and ever, and are done in truth and uprightness.

    Malachi 3:6 — For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

    Question 8: What is God’s Law a transcript of?

    The Ten Commandments are the transcript of God’s character. You can no more do away with the Ten Commandments than you could do away with God Himself. Everything in the Bible that describes God Himself, also describes His Ten Commandment Law. Each of the characteristics below have two Bible verses: one that describes God that way, and the other that describes the Ten Commandments that way as well.

    God and His Law are both:

    Good - Luke 18:19, 1 Tim. 1:8

    Holy - Isaiah 5:16, Romans 7:12

    Perfect - Matt. 5:48, Psalm 19:7

    Pure - 1 John 3:2-3, Psalm 19:8

    Just - Deut. 32:4, Romans 7:12

    True - John 3:33, Psal, 19:9

    Spiritual - 1 Cor. 10:4, Romans 7:14

    Righteous - Jer. 23:6, Psalm 119:172

    Faithful - 1 Cor. 1:9, Psalm 119:86

    Love - 1 John 4:8, Romans 13:10

    Unchangeable - James 1:17, Matt. 5:18

    Everlasting - Gen. 21:33, Psalms 111:7-8

    Question 9: What law was nailed to the cross and abolished?

    It was the ceremonial law that was nailed to the cross and abolished, not the Ten Commandment Law. The presence of the Sabbath before the fall of man shows the presence of the Ten Commandments before the fall. Thus, the Ten Commandments cannot be the law that was added because of sin. It was the law of Moses, the “handwriting of ordinances that was against us,” that was the law added because of sin, that ended at the Cross.

    Colossians 2:14-17 — Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

    Ephesians 2:14-15 — For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

    Deuteronomy 31:26 — Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.

    Question 10: Are we saved by grace, or by obedience?

    We are saved wholly of grace.

    Romans 3:20 — Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

    Ephesians 2:8-10 — For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

    Question 11: What, then, is the proof of our love to God??

    Just as we prove our love to our spouses by not cheating on them, by doing things that make them happy, we prove our love to God by doing what makes Him happy: loving obedience to His Ten Commandment Law.

    John 14:15-24 — If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

    Ezekiel 20:12, 20 — Moreover also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD that sanctify them…And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the LORD your God.

    Question 12: What list the foundation of the Ten Commandment Law of God?

    Love is the foundation of God’s Law and government. Love runs through every single one of the Ten Commandments, hence why James says when we break one, we break them all.

    Matthew 22:36-40 — Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

    Leviticus 19:18 — Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.

    Deuteronomy 6:5 — And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

    Romans 13:10 — Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

    Question 13: What happens to those who refuse obedience?

    Eternal death.

    Romans 6:23 — For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Isaiah 13:9 — Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.

    James 2:10 — For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

    Revelation 21:8 — But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

    Question 14: Why is obedience so important?

    It is our duty to obey God. The Ten Commandment Law of God also shows us what sin is, and who Jesus is.

    Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 — Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

    Romans 3:20 — Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

    1 John 3:4 — Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

    Question 15: Did Jesus break the law as many accuse Him of, or did He obey the Law?

    Many accuse Jesus of breaking the law, because of the pharisees accusing Him of breaking the Law. However, this claim is without foundation. Jesus Himself said He kept the Law. Thus, if He broke the Ten Commandments in any way, He would be both a liar and a sinner. The Bible also commands us to walk (live) as Jesus walked.

    John 15:10 — If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

    1 John 2:4-6 — He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

    Question 16: What is it that enables us to obey God’s Law?

    The New Covenant experience, grace, the power of the Holy Spirit, and love for Jesus.

    Zechariah 4:6 — Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.

    Hebrews 8:10 — For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

    John 14:15 — If ye love me, keep my commandments.

    Ephesians 2:8-10 — For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

    Titus 2:11-14 — For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

    Question 17: But doesn’t Paul teach that we are free to disobey?

    No, Paul constantly upheld the Ten Commandments. He taught that we are not under the legalism and condemnation of the law if we truly follow Jesus.

    Romans 6:14-15 (CJB) — For sin will not have authority over you; because you are not under legalism but under grace. Therefore, what conclusion should we reach? “Let’s go on sinning, because we’re not under legalism but under grace”? Heaven forbid!

    Romans 3:31 — Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

    Romans 6:1-2 — What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

    Question 18: Are all Ten Commandments repeated in the New Testament?

    Yes, they are.

    Matt. 4:10; 1 John 5:21, Acts 17:29; 1 Tim. 6:1; Matt. 24:20, Hebrews 4:4, 9, 10, Rev. 14:6-7; Matt. 19:19; Romans 13:9; Matt. 19:18; Romans 13:9; Romans 7:7

    Question 19: Why does Satan hate the law of God?

    It identifies who God’s people are, and shows that God’s grace really works to help us obey His Law.

    Revelation 12:17 — And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

    Revelation 14:12 — Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

    Question 20: Is loving obedience part of the Gospel?

    Yes it is. The Bible defines the Gospel in prophetic terms in Revelation 14:6-12. One of these aspects of the Gospel is to “Fear God,” which is connected with obedience to His Law.

    Deuteronomy 5:29 — O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!

    Deuteronomy 6:2 — That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

    Revelation 14:6-7 — And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

God and His Law are both: Good - Luke 18:19, 1 Tim. 1:8 Holy - Isaiah 5:16, Romans 7:12 Perfect - Matt. 5:48, Psalm 19:7 Pure - 1 John 3:2-3, Psalm 19:8 Just - Deut. 32:4, Romans 7:12 True - John 3:33, Psal, 19:9 Spiritual - 1 Cor. 10:4, Romans 7:14 Righteous - Jer. 23:6, Psalm 119:172 Faithful - 1 Cor. 1:9, Psalm 119:86 Love - 1 John 4:8, Romans 13:10 Unchangeable - James 1:17, Matt. 5:18 Everlasting - Gen. 21:33, Psalms 111:7-8 Question 9: What law was nailed to the cross and abolished? Ephesians 2:14-15 — For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; Deuteronomy 31:26 — Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee. Hebrews 8:10 — For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: John 14:15 — If ye love me, keep my commandments. 19:18; Romans 13:9; Romans 7:7 Question 19: Why does Satan hate the law of God? The Truth about the Trinity / Godhead

    Question 1: How many members of the Godhead are there?

    There are three members of the Godhead.

    Matthew 3:16-17 — And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

    1 John 5:7 — For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

    Question 2: Where do we first see them mentioned in the Bible?

    We first see the Godhead mentioned in Genesis 1:1. The Hebrew word for God in this text is Elohim, the plural form of the word for God.

    Genesis 1:1-2 — In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters..

    Question 3: Doesn’t the Bible say the Lord is ONE Lord?

    The word used in the text below for “one” means united, or together. It’s not referring to only one being.

    Deuteronomy 6:4-5 — Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

    Question 4: Is Jesus begotten, aka, created?

    No, begotten and created are the same thing. And Jesus created ALL things. Therefore, He is not created or begotten.

    Colossians 1:16-17 — For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

    John 1:1-3 — In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

    Question 5: But doesn’t John 3:16 say Jesus is begotten?

    No, the word begotten is a combination Greek word meaning only unique. Jesus is the only Son of God who is also God.

    John 3:16-17 — For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

    Question 6: What about the Holy Spirit? Is He a person, or an impersonal force?

    The Scripture below shows clearly that the Holy Spirit is also God, not an impersonal force. He is as much God as the Father and the Son are.

    Acts 5:3-4 — But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whilst it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

    Question 7: Do we see the Godhead in Revelation?

    Yes we do. We see it in Revelation 4-5. Below we see examples of how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are in the throne room of Heaven.

    Revelation 4:2-5 — And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

    Revelation 5:6-7 — And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. And he came and took the book out of the right hand of Him that sat upon the throne.

    Question 8: Where else in the Bible do we see the Godhead?

    Romans 1:20 — For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

    2 Corinthians 13:14 — The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.

    Colossians 2:8-10 — Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:

    Question 9: Are there other Scriptures where the Holy Spirit is called God?

    Yes, there are.

    2 Corinthians 3:17 — Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

    Galatians 4:6 — And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

    Romans 5:5 — And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

    Romans 8:9 — But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

    Ephesians 4:30 — And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

    Question 10: Did Jesus teach the 3 member Godhead?

    Yes He did.

    Matthew 28:19-20 — Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

    John 14:16-18 — And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

    John 15:26 — But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

    John 16:7-15 — Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

    Question 11: Is Jesus as fully God as the Father is?

    Yes, He is. Jesus is uncreated and unbegotten, just as the Father is.

    Isaiah 44:6 — Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.

    Isaiah 48:12 — Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.

    John 8:58 — Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

    Exodus 3:14 — And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

    Revelation 1:11, 17 — Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea…And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:

    Revelation 2:8 — And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;

    Revelation 22:12-13 — And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

    Question 12: Are there examples of all Three working together?

    Yes, there are. God gives messages to Jesus, who then gives them to the Holy Spirit, who then gives them to us.

    John 16:13-15 — Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

    Revelation 1:1-3 — The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John: Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw. Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

    Question 13: Does the Holy Spirit do anything that sets Him apart as an individual, not an impersonal force?

    Yes. He teaches us, convicts us, and guides us into all Truth. He also glorifies God and Jesus, and extends the messages they have to us.

    1 Corinthians 2:4-5 — And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

    Question 14: What else does the Holy Spirit do for us, that an impersonal force cannot do?

    He is referred to as the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Life, the Spirit of Truth, that guides us into all truth, and reveals Jesus to us. He has His own mind, and speaks directly to us. He can also be grieved and blasphemed.

    Genesis 1:2 — And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

    Genesis 6:3 — And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

    Romans 8:2, 9 — For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death…But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

    John 17:17 — Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

    Romans 8:27 — And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

    Acts 13:2 — As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

    Hebrews 3:3-11 — For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house. For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end. Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)

    Revelation 14:13 — And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

    Ephesians 4:30 — And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

    Matthew 12:31 — Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

    Question 15: Are all Three members of the Godhead equally uncreated God?

    Yes, all are equal and all are fully God.

    Matthew 28:18-20 — And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Romans 1:20 — For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 2 Corinthians 13:14 — The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. Colossians 2:8-10 — Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: Question 9: Are there other Scriptures where the Holy Spirit is called God? Yes, there are. 2 Corinthians 3:17 — Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. Galatians 4:6 — And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. John 15:26 — But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: John 16:7-15 — Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. John 16:13-15 — Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.
