• Good evening to everyone. Grace and Peace be with you.

Catawampus. That is my word of the day. Catawampus. It is a beautifully weird word that can be used in a myriad of ways to describe the perfect blend of chaos and dumbness in any given situation. The definition actually is: going badly, awkwardly, or in the wrong direction. Most Mondays are, by definition, catawampus. As you read from last night’s post, mine was extremely catawampus. Today tried to slide sideways but quickly smoothed out.

Another vibrant way to describe something going haywire is “off-kilter”. The actual definition of this word is: out of balance.

So, if your catawampus is off-kilter … is that good or bad?

The purpose of this paper today is to make you laugh with the playfulness of words. We make up words every day depending on how our brains and mouths communicate. Sometimes real words come out; sometimes weird syllables that formulate a weird concoction of letters into a word come out. Most of those situations result in gut-filled laughter and a sense of relief because of the guffaw.

What if we approached our off-kilter moments in life in the same manner? Throwing off the stress of the catawampus event and finding the hilarity in the guffaw. If we look, most any stressful situation can find some humor or light, even if it is deemed ‘inappropriate’. Such as, a friend of mine had a falling-out with their dad. They got sick, and when asked if the dad had been notified, I was promptly told no. For whatever the reason, I simply stated that had they called the dad, my friend may have just died on the table, to prove the point that they did not want to speak to him. Dark humor, yes. Somewhat funny in the moment, yes. Appropriate, not really. However, the levity of looking at something bad in a light that can bring a smile … totally worth it.

A business deal is heating up. Everyone involved is losing patience. Someone sneezes softly. Another person belts out, “No need to bring in biological warfare.” Inappropriate, yes. Funny, yes.

Mowing the yard with my borrowed mower, I missed a stump. Yes, a stump. Did not know or see it there. When the mower locked up and stopped mowing, instantly I saw my retirement check fly out the window. This mower was in my care; I was not careful enough, and instant panic set in … when explaining to the owner, he laughed and said he would like small bills. (FYI the mower was fixable)

There are going to be times in life when the situation or circumstance is not good. It is the habit that we have formed to always go dark and negative. That is fine if you only stay there for the moment, but immediately you should be searching for the bright side, the humor, the sarcastic satire. Something that shows you, in your heart, that God is in control and it will all work itself out.

Catawampus and off-kilter moments are a part of life. Do not allow them to remain permanent residents in your lane; find that inappropriate giggle line, and give it back to God. You will find that it helps alleviate your stress level and replace it with His love.

    Be blessed.

  • PAT BOONE: THE MAN BEHIND THE CLEAN-CUT IMAGE
Long before the Jesus Movement had a name, there was a young man from Tennessee named Pat Boone.
Clean cut. Polite. Christian. Married young.
And he became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
He sang. He acted. He hosted television. He became a teen idol and one of the most recognizable faces in America.
And then there was Elvis Presley. Elvis was rock ’n’ roll.
    Pat was… well, Pat Boone.
You probably wouldn’t have put those two together at the same table. But they became friends. In fact, they lived near each other in Bel Air, worked around the same Hollywood circles, and Elvis would sometimes visit Pat’s home.
And here’s one of my favorite little stories. Pat’s daughters would jump into the swimming pool and splash Elvis.
Pat apparently felt the need to remind them that they were getting Elvis wet. Elvis’s response?
“Leave ’em alone, man. I like it.”
The King of Rock ’n’ Roll apparently had no problem being attacked by a bunch of little girls with water wings.
But beneath the humor was something deeper.
Elvis knew Pat was a Christian.
    And Elvis trusted him.
At one point, Elvis told Pat he wished he could go to church like Pat did. But fame made it almost impossible. If Elvis walked into church, people would recognize him, ask for autographs and turn worship into a spectacle.
Later, while Elvis was performing in Las Vegas, he asked Pat…
    “Do you know Oral Roberts?”
Elvis wanted to talk with the famous evangelist. Pat basically told him, “You’re Elvis Presley. Pick up the phone!”
Think about that. The King of Rock ’n’ Roll was asking his Christian friend for help connecting with a Christian evangelist. That doesn’t mean Elvis suddenly became the Christian Pat hoped he would become. But it tells us something important.
    Elvis was searching.
And he knew he could talk to Pat about spiritual things.
Then came the Jesus Movement. Hippies were coming to Christ. Young people with long hair and very short patience for organized religion were showing up in churches. Rock music was being turned toward Jesus. And Pat Boone stepped into it.
He founded Lamb & Lion Records, helping give Christian musicians a place to make contemporary music about Jesus. But Pat didn’t hide from the culture.
In 1972, he and his wife and daughters even performed at a Playboy Club. Pat openly disagreed with the Playboy philosophy.
    But he went anyway.
    Why?
Because he believed Christians didn’t have to hide from people they disagreed with. He could walk into a place without becoming part of that place. He could love people without agreeing with everything they believed.
    And maybe that’s the lesson.
Pat Boone didn’t have to become Elvis to be his friend.
He didn’t have to compromise his faith to love someone who didn’t share it.
He simply stayed who he was.
    A Christian. A friend.
A man willing to walk into places where Christians weren’t always expected to go.
And perhaps that’s one of the things the Jesus Movement understood better than we sometimes do today….
Jesus didn’t tell us to love only people who already looked like us. He told us to love people.
    Period.
Sometimes friendship opens a door that preaching never could. And sometimes the person sitting across the table from you isn’t looking for an argument.
They’re looking for someone they can trust. Maybe that’s why Elvis trusted Pat Boone.
And maybe that’s why we should remember the story.
Be the kind of Christian people aren’t afraid to call when they’re searching.

  • Continuation chapter 3 3.1
The book of Proverbs, that ancient collection of wisdom and one-liners, gives us the antidote: "A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back." (Proverbs 29:11). A fool gives full vent. He opens the valve and lets the emotional steam blast out in every direction, scorching everyone in the vicinity, and then he calls it "transparency." The wise man, on the other hand, holds it back—not to suppress it forever, but to examine it first. He looks at the cake and says, "Before I serve this to everyone and insist it's from God, let me check the ingredients. Was this anger baked with love, or was it fried in last week's resentment? Was this righteous fury, or am I just tired and hungry and someone looked at me funny?" The wise man puts a pause between the feeling and the action. The fool just hits "send" on the email he wrote while the emotion was still a fresh, steaming loaf of nonsense.

‎Now, the truly spectacular part of this whole theatrical production is that the illusions are not random. They have a specific purpose. They are designed—by you, for you—to protect your fragile ego from the unbearable truth that you might be wrong, or selfish, or in need of genuine change. The illusion is a bodyguard hired by your pride. It stands at the door of your consciousness and says, "No, you can't come in here with that nonsense about humility and repentance. This person is a victim! A hero! A misunderstood prophet!" And the emotion that the illusion generates is the bodyguard's paycheck. As long as you stay angry, the bodyguard stays employed. As long as you feel sorry for yourself, the bodyguard gets a bonus. As long as you're right and they're wrong, the bodyguard gets a corner office with a view.

‎So how do you fire the bodyguard? How do you shut down the bake-off and stop eating the emotional cake that's making you spiritually obese? You do the one thing the illusion absolutely cannot survive: you laugh at it. Not a bitter, cynical laugh. A genuine, delighted, "oh my goodness, I've done it again, I actually convinced myself that my indigestion was a prophetic word" kind of laugh. You step back from the emotion and say, "There goes my heart again, being deceitful above all things. What a rascal. What a brilliant little con artist. Look at it go, spinning that same old story about how I'm the victim and they're the villain. It's almost adorable, like a hamster trying to operate a forklift." And when you laugh, the illusion loses its power. It cannot thrive in the light of genuine, humble humor. It needs you to take it seriously. It needs you to believe the drama. The moment you chuckle, the whole set collapses, and you see the strings and the plywood and the guy in the back operating the smoke machine.

‎King David, who was no stranger to emotional chaos—the man once danced nearly naked in public and also wrote some of the most anguished poetry in history—had a habit of talking to his own soul. He would say, "Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God." (Psalm 42:5). Notice what he's doing. He's not taking his downcast soul on a road trip of despair. He's interrogating it. He's cross-examining the witness. "Why are you downcast? Give me a reason. Is it a good reason, or did you just eat bad spiritual pizza again?" He's refusing to let the emotion drive the bus without showing its license. And then he redirects the soul to hope in God. Not to hope in the resolution of the immediate problem, not to hope in being proven right, but to hope in the character of the Almighty. That's not suppression; that's redirection. That's saying to the emotional cake, "Thank you for your submission, but I'm on a diet of actual truth now."

  • Good morning to everyone. Grace and Peace be with you.

My apologies for no post yesterday; Saturday took more out of me than I thought (doing two events), then my event yesterday … I was a tad tired. Just a smidge. My brain really was not braining. At the end of the day, I carefully plopped my tired and sore body into a very nice and steamy bath, and then I slept like a baby. Today I am rested and refreshed. So, we will see what kind of mischief the littles and I get into today. I think it is room-cleaning day to prepare for the workers who will repair it.

Typically, sales at these events are not high on my list, but planting seeds. Yesterday I was so tired, mostly from the heat, that I did not feel like I had done that. However, as we were tearing down, I spoke to the booth behind me, and she asked for my business card because she had heard me discuss my books and she wanted to look them up. Until that moment, I had considered my day a colossal failure and a waste of time. My attitude … well, it could have been better. Then into the evening I considered it a waste of time, except for the few friends that I met; however, this morning … now that I have rested and my brain is braining again … not a waste of time if you can plant one seed. I did.

This weekend for me was a great example of how the world sees things and how God sees them. The world sees that only booth money was made and no one was interested. God sees it as hidden opportunities. The world planted a seed that it was a waste; God showed me that it was far from it. One seed planted is always better than none. Through the day yesterday, I know that I showed fun and laughter to those around me, that I showed love for them without issue; displays of humor in the midst of the humid, cranky weather are always good seeds … then to have others hear about the material you write and want to read … add to that … potential new venues in the future. Yesterday was a success; I just needed to sleep, and my eyes were opened to His works.

Many times our efforts do not show immediately to our own sight because we are wanting one thing and when that does not happen, then the enemy steps in and tells us that we are wasting our time. He makes it quite convincing too. Last night I could have made some very life-changing decisions; however, the Holy Spirit told me to go to bed … I did not argue. I was tired. Today, I have an understanding of His plan. Today, between household chores, I will lay out what I believe He is telling me and pray over it. I want to make sure that it is Him that I am listening to and not me.

Do you have some decisions to make? Will they or could they be life-altering? Are you on the fence because they are so life-changing and you do not want to make a mistake? Write them out. Chronological or whimsical … either way works … then pray over that list. Sincerely ask the Father to guide you. He is not a genie; the answer may not come right away, but a peace will … if you genuinely give the list to Him to decide. After the peace arrives, then you can focus on the day’s issues and await His answer. You may be in the middle of a meeting or washing dishes or even going to the bathroom when He answers, but if you listen … He will answer … in His time.

Take today to make your list of thoughts, pray over them, and then enjoy the knowledge that the Father will answer you when He is ready for you to have the answer. It is so much easier on the brain when you do this, and when the answer comes, it will be clear.

    Be blessed.

  • Good morning to everyone. Grace and Peace be with you.

Can you believe these temperatures? I have actually put on jeans because it is too cool for me. Haha. Did not see that coming.

One of the neat things about social media is that you can have fun with your picture. There are these games that you can play that are “What are you like in animal form, good and bad?” “If you were a bird, which one would you be?” “What is your spirit flower?” The list goes on. Well, last night I played a couple, and the ‘glamour’ shots that they envisioned for me were hilariously beautiful and totally not happening at all at the same time. Haha. I love seeing what the AI algorithm thinks of my picture in these different scenarios. It is fun. But … anyone who knows me … the true me … knows that it is completely false - A mask.

This mask is meant for humor and enjoyment. Unfortunately, there are other masks out there that are for hiding the dark that lives in our lives. We have this unique way of portraying ourselves in a positive light so that no one will know the true darkness that hides in the shadows of our steps. It is not until we light the life-giving candle of Jesus Christ in our lives that we can shed our masks.

There are many umbrellas that we all walk under throughout our lives. The enemy is in many, if not all of them, to some degree … even the one held by Christ. Stick with me here. Through our lives, we are guided by circumstances. This is the catalyst for that. Because of that, I did this. He said this, so I replied that. And so on. Circumstances and scenarios drive our steps. In that, we put on masks to make ourselves look better than we truly are. I go to church; therefore, I must always be happy, and nothing is ever wrong in my life … Mask. If I show distress of any kind, then the person I am trying to lead to Christ will run away … Mask.

The enemy is constantly whispering his logical explanations over each step we make. Common sense explanations that truly hold water for thought. Making it seem as though the mask is the very thing that we need to keep up appearances and do God’s will. He makes very compelling arguments. Meanwhile, the mask is creating a lie. By keeping our troubles in the dark, we set those up around us for failure. Our struggles, our honesty, our transparency … that is what allows for the Light to shine out the darkness. Our ability to allow others to see the deepest truths of our lives is what will show them how we are still standing … because of the Love of Christ and our faith in him.

The enemy would have us believe that if Jane knows about what I did ten years ago, she will tell the pastor and the pastor will not allow me to volunteer anymore because I am a bad person. If Jane knows what I did, I will be the gossip point for the whole community, and my reputation will be ruined. If Jane finds out my secrets, she will walk away from me, and I will have no one. If Jane … (fyi…I do not know anyone named Jane…fictional name for this purpose) The enemy will convince me to bury our secrets to protect ourselves. Sometimes in that protection we end up building barriers which in turn end up as lies so that no one knows. Those lies compound and create even bigger issues.

This is not a call to stand on the street corner and confess your every sin of life. This is not a call for you to invite disruptive people into your life. This is a call for you to remove the mask of darkness, allow the Light to be your reflection, and when those secrets surface … face them head-on. “Yes, that was me then. But not anymore.” Once you do that and stand on it, darkness will no longer have any power over you. Today, I encourage you to find the mask that you are hiding behind and remove it. **The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. – Romans 13:12
Good morning to everyone. Your face is beautiful in the light of His love. Be blessed. **The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. – Romans 13:12

Social media has elevated connecting with people to a whole new level. People share things that used to be private - kept between only their closest friends. But this new information age has people sharing the most intimate details about their lives . . . and the lives of others. Before hitting that send button, stop and think, “Is what I’m about to send going to hurt someone else? Is my humor at the expense of a friend? Will my post embarrass someone?” Words are powerful, dangerous weapons and have the ability to destroy lives, which is why the Bible has quite a bit to say about controlling our tongues. In Proverbs 13:3, we’re told, “Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.” And Ephesians 4:29 says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Before speaking, consider whether or not what you’re about to say is kind, wholesome, uplifting, and Christ-like. If not, better to control your tongue and follow the advice in Colossians 4:6: “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” Text: 1 Peter 3:10, Proverbs 18:21, James 3:6, Matthew 12:36-37

    God’s Most Resilient Creature

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

A friend once used the word “resilient” to describe me. Of course, I was sure I knew what that word meant, but I got curious and looked it up in the dictionary, anyway. The first definition I saw described it as, “The ability to bounce or spring back into shape or position after being pressed or stretched.”

Well, I could certainly identify with being pressed and stretched: Pressed flat by a spouse’s unkind actions and stretching my body for childbirth; stretching my time and stretching the budget for one more meal. And bouncing back into shape after all that? Oh, yes! God keeps giving me strength to bounce higher after being pressed flat.

As for being stretched out of shape, well, even an old rubber band gets to keep being functional! I don’t have the same shape I once did, and I’ll always have demands on me or on my time; but God keeps me pliable so I don’t break!

Another part of the definition said that the word “resilient” also means, “The ability to recover strength, spirit, and good humor. Wow! That’s us! God gave women resilient strength—for raising our children, for enduring the heartaches of this world, and for offering comfort to a hurting sister whose name we may never know.

As for recovering our spirit, well, a woman’s spirit is bolstered every day by God’s Holy Spirit—the Voice within that helps us recover from guilt over our mistakes and encourages us to keep getting up when we’ve stumbled and fallen.

God also gave women good humor; the ability to laugh at so many things—including ourselves. When everything seems to be going wrong, it’s perfectly normal for women to re-group by laughing with each other over pizza or a bowl of ice cream. And only God’s daughters can cry during the pain of childbirth then laugh with tears of joy immediately afterward. We can even laugh with God. What a great gift He gave us!

Resilient. That’s you! Remember it and believe it. You are God’s most resilient creature!

  • Good morning to everyone. Grace and Peace be with you.

Last night I read about the body and how it is made up of many parts. That caused me to remember a few other analogies where the body’s parts each have a specific function and need. Which led me to joke about which one was more important and formidably in charge. (You all already know how my brain works ADDOST)

But the reading and subsequent thoughts caused a deeper look in my soul for the body of Christ. The Church. As I am writing this, I am reminded of how when one part of the body fails us, we can die. An organ as small as the appendix: if it ruptures and there is no immediate removal, we will die. The appendix is rarely talked about. I am not sure anyone knows that did not go to medical school; its true purpose is, without going to the Google. However, we all know it is there and the catastrophic end there will be if its flare is not heard and attended to.

Just as the appendix is forgotten about until it is not, so is the body of Christ. We are seen, in today’s society unfortunately, as fanatics and cult-driven brainwashers to some. I was sent a video from someone who has stepped away from the church for such reasons. That video is heartbreaking because of the potential damage it can do and probably already has done. The worst part is that the pastor saw nothing wrong with his actions. In the video, men dressed in camo came into the church armed with air rifles. They shot and pretended to ‘kill’ the devil (a man dressed in all black like a thief). Then they carried ‘the devil’ out as though they had defeated the enemy. As if that were not bad enough, they did this in front of children, and to make it even worse, it was a part of their Vacation Bible School lessons. They videoed the encounter and placed it on the internet, along with the pastor’s explanation and lack of discernment.

Now, I am all about object lessons to help us remember the important things in life. I use them quite frequently. However, in my opinion, this ‘object’ lesson went too far and taught the exact opposite of what Jesus stood for and our marching orders as soldiers for Christ. This object lesson is like the appendix that has burst, and now the body needs immediate Physician assistance. Personally, I place this particular congregation in the same arena as those who play with poisonous snakes to prove their faith. Missing the point of our marching orders.

    “Go out and make disciples.”

    “Build the Kingdom of God.”

As in my lesson last night while reading, we all have special talents that are needed in the body. Some teaching. Some humor. Some hands-on. Some empathy. Some culinary. All have a place and need in the body. When one part of the body fails, the other parts need to step up and guide or lend a helping hand. Now I cannot build a house that will be livable, but I can drive a nail or be the gopher for tools. I cannot cook a seven-course fancy meal, but I can operate a can opener or peel potatoes. And now that this video has gone viral, and I am sure to run across those wanting to know my take on it, I can show empathy for those involved, pray for those in leadership for discernment, and show those I encounter the Truth in His Word.

In my opinion, this particular incident was yet another attempt by the enemy to divide and destroy the church. However, I believe that when the body comes together as one to serve the One, that damage will be minimal and Love will prevail. I am asking that we come together in our little corner of the world and pray for this pastor, this congregation, and the children who witnessed this role-play demonstration. I also would ask that we pray for others who may be struggling to see His will in their lives. As a body, we can heal ourselves with the Love of the Father leading us. Will you pray with me?

    Be blessed.
