• PAT BOONE: THE MAN BEHIND THE CLEAN-CUT IMAGE
Long before the Jesus Movement had a name, there was a young man from Tennessee named Pat Boone.
Clean cut. Polite. Christian. Married young.
And he became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
He sang. He acted. He hosted television. He became a teen idol and one of the most recognizable faces in America.
And then there was Elvis Presley. Elvis was rock ’n’ roll.
    Pat was… well, Pat Boone.
You probably wouldn’t have put those two together at the same table. But they became friends. In fact, they lived near each other in Bel Air, worked around the same Hollywood circles, and Elvis would sometimes visit Pat’s home.
And here’s one of my favorite little stories. Pat’s daughters would jump into the swimming pool and splash Elvis.
Pat apparently felt the need to remind them that they were getting Elvis wet. Elvis’s response?
“Leave ’em alone, man. I like it.”
The King of Rock ’n’ Roll apparently had no problem being attacked by a bunch of little girls with water wings.
But beneath the humor was something deeper.
Elvis knew Pat was a Christian.
    And Elvis trusted him.
At one point, Elvis told Pat he wished he could go to church like Pat did. But fame made it almost impossible. If Elvis walked into church, people would recognize him, ask for autographs and turn worship into a spectacle.
Later, while Elvis was performing in Las Vegas, he asked Pat…
    “Do you know Oral Roberts?”
Elvis wanted to talk with the famous evangelist. Pat basically told him, “You’re Elvis Presley. Pick up the phone!”
Think about that. The King of Rock ’n’ Roll was asking his Christian friend for help connecting with a Christian evangelist. That doesn’t mean Elvis suddenly became the Christian Pat hoped he would become. But it tells us something important.
    Elvis was searching.
And he knew he could talk to Pat about spiritual things.
Then came the Jesus Movement. Hippies were coming to Christ. Young people with long hair and very short patience for organized religion were showing up in churches. Rock music was being turned toward Jesus. And Pat Boone stepped into it.
He founded Lamb & Lion Records, helping give Christian musicians a place to make contemporary music about Jesus. But Pat didn’t hide from the culture.
In 1972, he and his wife and daughters even performed at a Playboy Club. Pat openly disagreed with the Playboy philosophy.
    But he went anyway.
    Why?
Because he believed Christians didn’t have to hide from people they disagreed with. He could walk into a place without becoming part of that place. He could love people without agreeing with everything they believed.
    And maybe that’s the lesson.
Pat Boone didn’t have to become Elvis to be his friend.
He didn’t have to compromise his faith to love someone who didn’t share it.
He simply stayed who he was.
    A Christian. A friend.
A man willing to walk into places where Christians weren’t always expected to go.
And perhaps that’s one of the things the Jesus Movement understood better than we sometimes do today….
Jesus didn’t tell us to love only people who already looked like us. He told us to love people.
    Period.
Sometimes friendship opens a door that preaching never could. And sometimes the person sitting across the table from you isn’t looking for an argument.
They’re looking for someone they can trust. Maybe that’s why Elvis trusted Pat Boone.
And maybe that’s why we should remember the story.
Be the kind of Christian people aren’t afraid to call when they’re searching.

  • Greg Laurie and the Revival That Refused to Die
Long before the crowds, the books, the crusades, and the cameras, Greg Laurie was just a kid looking for something that made sense.
Southern California in the late 1960s was a strange place to grow up. The beaches were packed, the music was loud, and young people were searching everywhere for meaning, in drugs, mysticism, rebellion, and new philosophies that promised enlightenment. Greg was one of them: not a future evangelist or pastor, just another teenager trying to find his place in a confusing world.
His home life was unstable, and security was hard to find. Like many of his generation, he carried questions nobody around him seemed able to answer.
    Then something unexpected happened.
A spiritual awakening began spreading through California. It didn’t start in churches filled with religious insiders. It started among surfers, hippies, runaways, musicians, and young people who had nearly given up hope. They came barefoot, with long hair and broken lives, and heard a simple message: Jesus Christ could change everything.
Greg Laurie was swept into that movement.
As a teenager, he found himself listening to Bible teaching at Calvary Chapel. What he encountered was more than religion. It was a community of transformed people whose lives seemed to prove that the Gospel was real.
Imagine watching thousands of young people abandon destructive lifestyles, find purpose, restore relationships, and devote themselves to Christ. Imagine witnessing mass baptisms in the Pacific Ocean where hundreds entered the water convinced they had finally found what they had been searching for.
    That was Greg Laurie’s world.
Many figures from those days became legends of the Jesus Movement. Some experienced great success. Others endured heartbreak, controversy, or tragedy. The movement itself eventually faded from the headlines.
    But Greg Laurie remained.
At only nineteen years old, he started a small Bible study. No one could have predicted that it would eventually grow into Harvest Christian Fellowship and impact millions of lives.
What stands out about Greg’s story is not the size of what he built. It is the consistency of what he believed.
For more than fifty years, through cultural change, personal loss, and ministry success, he has continued proclaiming the same message that captured his heart as a teenager: Jesus Christ is alive, grace is real, and no one is beyond redemption.
The older I get, the more remarkable that seems.
Many people start strong. Few remain faithful.
Scripture repeatedly emphasizes that endurance matters. The Apostle Paul spoke of finishing the race and keeping the faith. Jesus taught that the one who endures to the end will be saved. Faithfulness is rarely dramatic. It is usually built through thousands of ordinary acts of obedience over a lifetime.
Perhaps that is why Greg Laurie’s story continues to resonate. He is not merely a survivor of the Jesus Movement. He is one of its living witnesses, a reminder that while movements rise and fall and cultural trends come and go, the transforming power of Christ remains unchanged.
And somewhere, I suspect, that searching teenager from California would still be amazed by what God chose to do with a life that simply said yes.

  • In this episode of A Guy and His Bible, we explore the powerful story behind the Holy Club at Oxford and the spiritual journeys of Charles Wesley, John Wesley, and George Whitefield. What began as a pursuit of strict religious discipline revealed a deeper truth — salvation cannot be earned through works, self-denial, or perfection.

    https://youtu.be/Amisk9jRzoE

Discover how Whitefield came to understand the life-changing message of being “born again” and how God’s grace transformed his heart forever. This study reminds us that salvation is not achieved by human effort but received as a gift through faith in Jesus Christ.

    Key Scripture: Ephesians 2:8–9
“God saved you by his grace when you believed…”

Join us as we examine the difference between religion and a real relationship with Christ, and how true transformation comes only through the grace of God.

  • The Incredible True Story of Mel Trotter https://youtu.be/KywHu6UFuaM?si=nalqdcPh1Y4XFWSF via @YouTube

Born into alcoholism and brokenness, Mel Trotter’s life spiraled into addiction, gambling, loss, and despair. After the death of his young son and the collapse of his family, Trotter fled to Chicago with one final plan—to end his life. Homeless, barefoot, and hopeless in a January blizzard, he stumbled into the only building with its lights on: Pacific Garden Mission. What happened that night on January 19, 1897, changed everything. In a simple moment of surrender, Mel Trotter encountered the love of Jesus Christ—and the chains of addiction and despair were broken. That night, his life didn’t end. It began. For the next 43 years, Mel Trotter devoted his life to rescuing the lost, preaching the gospel, and leading a rescue mission that would help spark dozens more across the United States. His message was simple and timeless: “God loves you in the midst of the deepest failure and despair, and His love has the power to change even the most ruined life.” If you’re struggling, discouraged, or feel beyond hope—this story is for you.
