  • THE GOD WHO WALKS IN HISTORY
Thesis: The God who reveals Himself in Scripture also reveals Himself in the soil, stones, and civilizations of history. Faith is not blind; it is anchored in time, space, culture, and material reality.
SECTION 1 THE GOD WHO STEPS INTO HISTORY
Texts: Luke 1:1–4; John 1:14; 2 Peter 1:16 Doctrines: Incarnation, Revelation
Luke writes with the meticulous care of a historian, John speaks as a firsthand witness, and Peter writes as a man who saw Christ's glory and majesty with his own eyes. Christianity is not built on myth, speculative theories, or symbolic folklore; it is firmly anchored in concrete moments, specific places, real people, and verifiable historical events. Biblical faith is rooted in time, space, culture, and material reality.
Archaeology amplifies and illuminates this truth. While archaeology cannot create faith or prove divine inspiration, it bridges faith and historical inquiry by excavating, deciphering, and evaluating ancient material records. It demonstrates that biblical narratives are historically reliable, connecting sacred Scripture to the real world of ancient civilizations and providing material evidence that grounds divine revelation.
The Tel Dan Stele stands as a stone‑carved testimony that King David was not a legend, myth, or literary invention. Discovered in 1993 in northern Israel, this basalt victory monument commissioned by Hazael of Aram-Damascus contains the Paleo-Hebrew inscription Beit David ("House of David"). Written by a pagan king and bitter enemy of Israel, it provides an unshakeable external confirmation of David's historical existence, dynasty, and lasting impact.
In similar fashion, the Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered between 1947 and 1956 in caves along the Dead Sea shore, testify that the Scriptures were preserved with astonishing accuracy across generations. Containing biblical manuscripts over 1,000 years older than any previously known Hebrew texts—most notably the complete Great Isaiah Scroll—the scrolls demonstrate the faithful transmission and historical trustworthiness of God's Word across centuries.
Illustration: A man once told me, “I don't believe anything I can't touch.” I handed him a pottery shard from Galilee and said, “Then touch the world Jesus walked in.” He broke.
This moment illustrates how material evidence grounds divine revelation. The shores of the Sea of Galilee served as the floorboards of Jesus' classroom, where He ministered in real fishing villages like Capernaum and Magdala. Excavations in these towns have uncovered first-century synagogues, black basalt foundations, ancient homes, and fishing tools that directly reflect the Gospel accounts. Such artifacts and pottery shards demonstrate that the Incarnation is not an abstract theory or myth; the Word became flesh, breathed the air of a fishing village, walked on specific floors, and occupied the same physical world we do. By bridging faith and historical inquiry, archaeology confirms that biblical faith is firmly anchored in time, space, culture, and material reality.
    SECTION 2 — SCRIPTURE’S RELIABILITY THROUGH ARCHAEOLOGY
Texts: Isaiah 40:8; Matthew 5:18; Psalm 119:89 Doctrine: Biblical inspiration
Archaeology does not create faith it illuminates faith.
    The Lachish Letters
Written during the critical moments of the Babylonian invasion described in the prophetic book of Jeremiah, these military ostraca capture the immense fear, pressing urgency, and real-time collapse of Judah.
One notable message vividly records the military outpost's dire situation: “We are watching for the signals of Lachish… but we cannot see Azekah.”
As Jeremiah describes a nation enduring a catastrophic siege, the physical soil and artifacts of Lachish tangibly preserve the frantic final communications and authentic voices of its ancient defenders.
    Other confirmations
Numerous other archaeological discoveries provide historical grounding for biblical accounts. For example, the Pool of Bethesda was excavated and uncovered precisely as described in John 5. Similarly, the powerful Hittite Empire—a civilization once dismissed by critics as mere literary fiction—is now fully documented through extensive historical records and material evidence.
Illustration: Archaeology acts as a floodlight. It does not create faith out of nothing, but rather illuminates the historic reality that was present all along, allowing us to see the historical record clearly.
SECTION 3 — THE WORLD OF THE PATRIARCHS
Texts: Genesis 12; Genesis 15; Hebrews 11:8–12 Doctrine: Covenant theology
Abraham lived in a world of law, covenant, and custom, deeply embedded in the cultural and legal frameworks of the ancient Near East. Surrounding civilizations possessed sophisticated legal traditions—such as the Code of Ur-Nammu, the Code of Hammurabi, and Hittite laws—demonstrating that codified law and covenantal structures were widespread during the second millennium BC.
The 15th-century BC Nuzi Tablets provide abundant cultural confirmation of Genesis, revealing adoption practices identical to Abraham’s heir dilemma where childless couples could adopt a servant as an heir—precisely mirroring Abraham's arrangement with Eliezer (Genesis 15:3). Nuzi documents also detail surrogate motherhood provisions requiring barren wives to provide servant girls to their husbands (matching Sarah and Hagar in Genesis 16:2) and document negotiable birthright transactions similar to Jacob and Esau.
Similarly, the 19th-century BC Mari Letters—a collection of 20,000 tablets—describe nomadic migrations, tribal movements, and Northwest Semitic customs that directly mirror Genesis. These texts contain name patterns specifically current in Mesopotamia during this period, including names closely matching Serug, Nahor, Terah, Abraham, and Jacob. Additionally, the contemporary Alalakh Texts further illuminate the authentic family and legal practices reflected throughout the patriarchal narratives.
God’s covenant was not communicated in a cultural vacuum; it was spoken into a real society with real expectations, authentic legal customs, and verifiable historical settings.
Illustration: A footprint in clay proves someone walked there. Genesis is full of footprints.
SECTION 4 EXODUS: THE GOD WHO LIBERATES
Texts: Exodus 3; Exodus 12; Psalm 77:14 Doctrine: Redemption
The Exodus is not a fairy tale. It is God confronting the Egyptian empire.
Egyptian records confirm Semitic populations resided in the Delta. The Merneptah Stele declares “Israel is laid waste,” providing early extra-biblical confirmation of Israel’s presence in Canaan. Furthermore, satellite technology using infrared sensors has detected ancient trails and heat patterns left in desert sands made by large groups leaving the Nile Delta along the Suez coast, mirroring the biblical route.
Archaeological excavations at Tell el-Kharouba in northern Sinai revealed a massive Egyptian military fortress guarding "The Way of Horus". This heavily fortified coastal highway explains why God redirected Israel through the wilderness—as recorded in Exodus 13:17–18—sparing a newly liberated population from encountering seasoned Egyptian military garrisons.
In Canaan, Late Bronze Age cities show sudden collapses consistent with Joshua’s conquest. At Jericho, archaeological excavations revealed massive fortifications featuring 4.6-meter stone retaining walls topped by mud-brick walls 1.8 meters thick. The collapsed mud-brick walls fell outward to form natural ramps for attackers at the wall base, while a massive 9-meter ash layer attests to fierce, intense destruction by fire. Jars of stored grain further indicate a brief siege before the city fell, exactly matching the biblical account in Joshua.
At Ai, traditional identification with et-Tell presented problems because that site was not occupied during Joshua's time. However, candidate sites such as Khirbet el-Maqatir show evidence of a 15th-century BC fortress that fits all biblical requirements, offering a promising resolution to long-standing geographical and chronological debates.
At Hazor—explicitly described as the "head of all those kingdoms" in Joshua 11:10 and noted uniquely in the 14th-century Egyptian Amarna Letters with a ruler titled "king"—excavations uncovered city walls over 7 meters wide, a massive conflagration layer, and evidence of sudden, violent destruction by fire dated to approximately 1400 BC.
Illustration: A chain breaks only when something stronger pulls against it. God pulled. The physical collapse of ancient Canaanite fortifications bears silent witness to divine intervention in human history.
SECTION 5 — THE KINGDOM ERA: GOD’S RULE IN REAL TIME
    Texts: 1 Samuel 8; 2 Samuel 7; Psalm 2 Doctrine: Kingship
Israel’s monarchy unfolded in the same geopolitical world we excavate today.
The Karnak relief records Shishak’s campaign. Samaria ostraca reveals taxation systems matching Scripture. The Babylonian Chronicles align with 2 Kings and Jeremiah.
In 701 BCE, facing the imminent threat of Assyrian invasion, King Hezekiah secured Jerusalem’s water supply by redirecting the Gihon Spring—Jerusalem’s only permanent water source—through a 1,750-foot tunnel carved through solid rock, directly confirming 2 Chronicles 32:30. When Assyrian king Sennacherib boasted of shutting up Hezekiah "like a bird in a cage," he underestimated a king who had secured the city's lifeblood so that invading armies would not find water.
Inside the tunnel, the Siloam Inscription documents this extraordinary engineering achievement, describing how two teams of stonecutters guided by the sound of their axes carved through rock from opposite directions until meeting in the middle. This discovery validates the strategic preparations detailed in Scripture, demonstrating that Hezekiah did not simply pray and wait, but prayed and prepared by taking decisive action in obedience.
Illustration: History is God’s canvas. Kings rise and fall — the Artist remains. Faith does not wait for crisis; faith prepares for victory. Hezekiah dug a tunnel before the enemy arrived.
SECTION 6 — JESUS IN THE FULLNESS OF TIME
Texts: Galatians 4:4; Luke 4:31–37; John 19:16 Doctrine: Christology
Jesus entered a world we can still touch. The Incarnation means the Word became flesh and dwelt in real geographical spaces, walking on physical stones and breathing the air of first-century Judea and Galilee.
At Capernaum—known as Jesus' "own city"—excavations uncovered the black basalt foundations of the very synagogue where He taught, along with an octagonal church built over a humble first-century home identified as the House of Peter. Nearby at Magdala, archaeologists discovered a first-century synagogue featuring the "Magdala Stone," which depicts the Second Temple and its Menorah, as well as fishing tools and home structures consistent with the Gospel accounts.
In addition, first-century burial practices and ornate limestone ossuaries confirm names common to Jesus' era, including the ossuary of High Priest Caiaphas inscribed "Yehosef bar Qayafa". In 1961 at Caesarea Maritima, archaeologists discovered the Pilate Stone—a limestone block explicitly inscribed "Pontius Pilate, Prefect of Judea"—verifying the exact historical title and identity of the Roman governor who presided over Jesus' trial. Excavations in Nazareth further confirm authentic first-century settlement patterns, establishing that the narrative of Christ is deeply anchored in real time, space, and history.
Illustration: Walk the streets of Capernaum today and you walk where Jesus walked. Faith becomes sight.
SECTION 7 — THE RESURRECTION: THEOLOGY MEETS TANGIBLE REALITY
Texts: 1 Corinthians 15; Matthew 28; Romans 6:4 Doctrine: Resurrection theology
The resurrection was proclaimed in a culture that understood death intimately. Second Temple Jewish burial customs involved precise two-stage practices, where bodies were laid in rock-cut tombs before bones were placed in limestone ossuaries. Excavations throughout Jerusalem reveal tombs featuring burial niches and rolling stone tracks that directly mirror the Gospel accounts. For example, the discovery of the ornate limestone ossuary inscribed "Yehosef bar Qayafa" (Joseph, son of Caiaphas) confirms the historical reality of the high priest who presided over Jesus' trial and demonstrates the authenticity of first-century Judean burial traditions.
Furthermore, physical evidence such as the heel bone of Yehohanan—pierced by a seven-inch iron nail—forensically confirms Roman crucifixion mechanics and subsequent proper burial in Jerusalem during this era. Excavations beneath the Church of the Holy Sepulchre complex have also uncovered a first-century limestone quarry transformed into a working garden outside the ancient city walls, containing a rock-cut tomb matching the exact geographical and architectural setting described in John's Gospel.
Ossuaries and funerary traditions reflect a deeply ingrained belief in bodily resurrection, while subterranean catacombs, sacred symbols, and early Christian inscriptions boldly proclaim, “He is risen”. While archaeology cannot measure the supernatural moment of resurrection, the physical record—from excavated gardens to empty tombs—demonstrates that the Gospel narrative is anchored in tangible historical reality.

Illustration: A seed buried in the ground does not stay dead. Neither did the Son of God.
SECTION 8 — CLOSING MOVEMENT: “THE STONES CRY OUT”
    Texts: Luke 19:40; Psalm 78:4; Hebrews 13:8
SECTION 8 — CLOSING MOVEMENT: “THE STONES CRY OUT”
Texts: Luke 19:40; Psalm 78:4; Hebrews 13:8 Doctrine: Faithfulness of God
Scripture is inherently trustworthy because God Himself is faithful. While archaeology is not the primary foundation of faith, it serves as a powerful, unbiased witness to the historical reality of divine revelation. The archaeological record does not invent spiritual truth; rather, it shines a floodlight on the physical setting of redemption, confirming that God acted directly within human history.
When Jesus declared in Luke 19:40 that the very stones would cry out, He testified to a reality that echoes through centuries of excavation. From the basalt of the Tel Dan Stele to the rock walls of Hezekiah’s Tunnel, physical artifacts continuously affirm the biblical narrative. As Psalm 78:4 urges believers to tell the glorious deeds of the Lord to the next generation, material discoveries serve as tangible evidence that can be passed down across ages.
The stones cry out from ancient city ruins. The scrolls cry out from the caves of Qumran. The inscriptions cry out from military ostraca, royal stelae, and Roman limestone. History itself cries out in unison.
And they all proclaim the exact same eternal truth: Jesus Christ is Lord. Yesterday, today, and forever. Just as Hebrews 13:8 affirms His unchanging character, the historical record testifies that the God who acted in centuries past remains the faithful Lord of today and eternity.
Final Illustration: Archaeologists brush away layers of dust and debris from ancient ruins to reveal the historical truth beneath. In the exact same way, God brushes away the guilt, darkness, and decay of sin to reveal the glorious, living presence of Christ in the human heart.

Discover What the Scientific World Observed About Creation

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

The scientific world was impressed with the findings of a satellite which explored the outer reaches of space. The Cosmic Background Explorer satellite, which was put into orbit as part of the U.S. space program, confirmed that immediately following what scientists referred to as the “big bang,” there were ripples of matter that seemed to form in patterns. What was observed was not a chaotic explosion such as follows when you put a firecracker under a tin can or in an ant hill, but a systematic pattern that reflected design.

The question immediately follows, though, “If there is design, then who is the designer?” An editorial asks, “Does this discovery prove God’s existence?” Says the editorial: “The proofs are not theological but philosophical. Though religion acts as a guide, the proofs must stand the test of strict rationality.” But the editor who wrote the column admitted that design raises a question which Thomas Aquinas posed: “If there is design, does not this bear witness to the fact there had to be a designer?” A watch does not appear without someone having designed and manufactured it. A building doesn’t appear apart from an architect’s concept. An explosion in a print shop does not produce a book. And, reasoned Thomas Aquinas, neither can there be design in creation apart from a Designer, who, believed Aquinas, is God, the Creator.

Aquinas drew from Aristotle, the Jewish Rabbi Maimonides, and Arab philosophers in putting together his five proofs for the existence of God, one of which is that design proves a Designer. Aquinas, who lived seven centuries before modern science came into its own, argued that something cannot be created from nothing, and when you acknowledge that creation followed a pattern of development, you have recognized the power of a Creator. That creator, believed Aquinas, was the God of the Bible, who described the creative process in the book of Genesis.

Have you ever wondered why some scientists are so very opposed to recognizing a Creator God as the force of creation—the one who formulated the laws of cause and effect which resulted in our beautiful planet? The very fact that some are so violently opposed to recognizing His existence is a powerful proof of His reality, so contends Gilbert Keith Chesterton, the British author and writer.

G.K. Chesterton wrote, “I was a pagan at the age of twelve and a complete agnostic by the age of sixteen.” He abandoned whatever faith he grew up with and then, as an adult, began to ask why some were so violently opposed to Christianity. He began asking himself, “What is it about the God of Christianity which they so want to deny?”

In his own words: “As I read and reread all the non-Christian or anti-Christian accounts of the faith … a slow and awful impression grew upon my mind—the impression that Christianity must be an extraordinary thing. It was attacked on all sides, for all contradictory reasons … . And it did for one wild moment cross my mind that perhaps [these] might not be the very best judges of the relationship of religion to happiness who, by their own account, had neither one nor the other.”

Seemingly, the deeper the probe of science, the closer we come to the reality of the God who spoke the Word and brought our world into being. As Chesterton wrote, science is “moving towards the supernatural with the rapidity of a [railroad] train.” Yes, old Aquinas was right: Design demonstrates the existence of a Designer.

    THE FLAT EARTH
A Compelling Biblical And Scientific Examination

What This Actually Reveals About Creation

    Introduction
In recent years, a small but vocal movement has revived the ancient belief that the earth is not a sphere but a flat disc. Armed with passages of Scriptures from the Bible, they have build a modern argument for a flat earth.

Such a claim demands careful and honest examination. While the Scriptures were not written as a scientific textbook, they do contain many statements about the earth, the heavens, the horizon, the sun, the stars, and what are called the “ends” of the world. Some people have used such verses to argue for a flat earth, while others point to passages that imply a spherical, suspended earth.

A careful and balanced study of the biblical text reveals that the flat earth theory finds no genuine support in Scripture. Instead, the Bible contains remarkable statements that harmonize with a rounded earth suspended in space, while the so‑called “flat earth” verses are shown, upon examination, to be poetic, symbolic, phenomenological, or common idiomatic expressions. When the original language, literary context, and style of Hebrew writing are honestly considered, the Bible emerges not as a defender of flat earth theory, but as a divinely inspired revelation free from the primitive flat earth myths that surrounded the ancient world.

This study will examine the principal passages used by flat earth advocates and compare them with both Scripture and observable reality. We will also consider evidence from history, astronomy, geography, physics, and human experience itself. The purpose is not mockery or ridicule, but truth. God never asks His people to believe falsehood in order to defend His Word. Truth is strengthened by investigation, not weakened by it.

The God who inspired Scripture is also the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Therefore, genuine science and properly understood Scripture cannot ultimately contradict one another. Problems arise only when human beings misunderstand either the Bible or the natural world.

One of the most astonishing cosmological statements in all ancient literature appears in the book of Job: “He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.” — Job 26:7.

Consider the era in which these words were written. Ancient pagan civilizations often imagined the earth resting upon physical supports. The Egyptians spoke of pillars holding up the heavens. Hindu cosmology described elephants standing upon a giant turtle supporting the earth. Greek mythology imagined Atlas carrying the world upon his shoulders.

Yet Scripture declares something entirely different. The earth hangs “upon nothing.” This statement is extraordinary because it departs completely from the cosmological imagination of the ancient world. It does not describe a flat earth resting on pillars, floating upon a cosmic sea, or supported by mythical creatures. Instead, it describes the earth suspended freely in space.

Modern astronomy confirms precisely this reality. The earth floats in the vacuum of space, held in orbit through gravitational forces established by the Creator Himself. Thousands of years before telescopes, satellites, or space exploration existed, the Bible described the earth in language remarkably consistent with reality.

A flat earth model struggles greatly with this verse because a flat disc would logically require structural support. But Job says plainly that the earth hangs “upon nothing.”

The prophet Isaiah wrote: “It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.” — Isaiah 40:22.

The Hebrew word translated “circle” is chug, meaning a circle, circuit, or horizon. While the word does not specifically mean “sphere,” it certainly does not describe a square or flat rectangular world. The imagery is unmistakably one of roundness.

When viewed from above, a sphere appears circular. The horizon itself also appears circular to the observer. Isaiah presents God enthroned above the earth while humanity appears tiny beneath Him “as grasshoppers.” The perspective is one of vastness, elevation, and curvature.

Interestingly, the same verse speaks of God stretching out the heavens “as a curtain.” Modern astronomy has discovered that the universe itself is expanding. While Scripture was not written to teach astrophysics, its language repeatedly harmonizes with truths later confirmed by scientific discovery.

If the Bible intended to teach a flat earth, one would expect direct and unmistakable statements declaring such a thing. Instead, Scripture repeatedly employs language of circularity, suspension, and cosmic order.

The book of Proverbs records wisdom personified speaking concerning creation: “When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth.” Proverbs 8:27.

The word translated “compass” refers to a circular boundary or horizon. Again Scripture uses imagery connected with curvature and circularity.

Every sailor standing upon the sea witnesses this reality. Ships disappear hull first beyond the horizon because the earth curves downward. If the earth were flat, ships would simply grow smaller until invisible, yet this is not what occurs.

The Greek geographer and historian Strabo, writing in the first century before Christ, observed that ships vanish from the bottom upward over the horizon, and he used this phenomenon as evidence for the earth’s curvature. The Bible’s language aligns naturally with observable reality.

Perhaps one of the strongest biblical evidences harmonizing with a spherical earth appears in the words of Jesus Christ Himself. Speaking about conditions at His second coming, Christ declared: “I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.” — Luke 17:34–36.

Notice the remarkable detail. One group is sleeping at night. Another group is indoors grinding grain. Another group is outside working in the field during daylight. These activities are occurring simultaneously.

This naturally fits the reality of a rotating spherical earth where different regions experience daylight and darkness at the same time. While one part of the world sleeps, another labors beneath the sun.

A flat earth model struggles greatly here. If sunlight illuminates a flat plane uniformly, simultaneous widespread night and day become difficult to explain naturally. Christ’s words harmonize beautifully with the existence of global time zones produced by a rotating sphere.

One of the greatest errors made by flat earth advocates is the failure to distinguish between scientific description and observational language.

Ecclesiastes states: “The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.” Ecclesiastes 1:5.

Flat earth proponents often argue that this verse proves the sun literally moves around the earth. Yet even in modern times, everyone still speaks of “sunrise” and “sunset.” Astronomers themselves use these terms because they describe appearance from human perspective. This is called phenomenological language , describing things as they appear to the observer.

The Bible uses this kind of language frequently. Joshua wrote: “And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed…” Joshua 10:13. Genesis describes the Flood by saying: “In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life… the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.” Genesis 7:11. Job declared: “The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof.” Job 26:11.

These are descriptive expressions understandable to ordinary people. Scripture was written for humanity across all ages and educational levels, not as a technical scientific manual. God accommodates divine revelation to human understanding, just as a parent speaks to a child using familiar language.

Flat earth advocates frequently quote passages referring to the “four corners of the earth.” Isaiah wrote: “And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.” Isaiah 11:12. Revelation declares: “And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth…” Revelation 7:1.

These are ordinary idiomatic expressions referring to the four directions: north, south, east, and west. Even today people speak of “the four corners of the globe” or say someone traveled “to every corner of the earth.” Nobody imagines the earth literally possesses square corners.

The British philosopher and historian David Hume observed that ordinary human language constantly employs such figures of speech without intending literal geometry. The Bible communicates through human language, and human language naturally contains idioms.

Scripture also frequently refers to “the ends of the earth.” Jesus declared: “And ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Acts 1:8.

This phrase means distant lands or remote regions. Even modern people still say things such as “I searched to the ends of the earth,” or “the edge of town,” without implying literal edges or cliffs. The Greek geographer Ptolemy similarly referred to “the ends of the inhabited world” without believing the earth was flat. These are figures of speech, not scientific descriptions.

Another commonly misused passage appears in the temptation of Christ: “Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them.” Matthew 4:8.

Flat earth proponents claim this event could only occur on a flat earth. But this argument fails immediately because no mountain on earth, even on a perfectly flat plane, can provide visibility of all kingdoms worldwide. Atmospheric limitations alone prevent such viewing. The event was supernatural.

The devil provided Christ with a supernatural or visionary display for the purpose of temptation. Scripture contains many supernatural visions that transcend ordinary physical laws. Ezekiel saw wheels within wheels. John saw prophetic beasts rising from the sea. None of these visions are limited by normal optics or geography. To force this passage into becoming a scientific statement about earth geometry is to misunderstand its entire purpose.

Several passages speak of the earth as stable or immovable. “The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty… the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.” Psalm 93:1. “Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.” Psalm 104:5. “The world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.” 1 Chronicles 16:30.

These verses do not teach that the earth lacks rotation or orbital motion. They teach that God has established creation securely and sustains it faithfully. The emphasis is theological, not astronomical.

The same Bible also describes mountains skipping like rams: “The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like lambs.” Psalm 114:4. Isaiah wrote: “The mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12. No reasonable reader imagines literal singing hills or hand‑clapping trees. Hebrew poetry employs vivid imagery to communicate truth powerfully.

Genesis records: “And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters…” — Genesis 1:6.

Some claim the Hebrew word raqia teaches the existence of a hard metallic dome over a flat earth. Yet Scripture itself explains the meaning by saying birds fly within this “firmament”: “And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.” Genesis 1:20.

Birds do not fly through solid crystal or metal. They fly through atmosphere and open sky. The word raqia refers to an expanse or stretched‑out space. The Dutch theologian Herman Bavinck explained that biblical writers described creation using ordinary observational language understandable to humanity. The Bible does not teach the existence of a solid dome enclosing a flat earth.

Scripture sometimes speaks of the earth having “foundations” or “pillars.” “For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.” — 1 Samuel 2:8. “Who laid the foundations of the earth…” — Psalm 104:5.

These are poetic construction metaphors describing God establishing the world securely. Matthew Henry, the respected eighteenth‑century Bible commentator, explained that such language is figurative and borrowed from the structure of buildings and houses.

The Bible frequently uses vivid imagery. “Let the floods clap their hands…” — Psalm 98:8. “Then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice.” Psalm 96:12. Literalistic interpretation of every poetic phrase leads to absurd conclusions. Understanding genre is essential to sound biblical interpretation.

Now the famous Galileo controversy was never about whether the earth was round. The debate concerned whether the earth revolved around the sun. Long before the modern era, educated Christians recognized the earth’s sphericity. The idea that Christianity historically taught a flat earth is itself largely a modern myth.

Science today confirms beyond reasonable doubt that the earth is an oblate spheroid, slightly flattened at the poles and bulging at the equator.

Around 240 years before Christ, the Greek scholar Eratosthenes measured the earth’s circumference with astonishing accuracy using shadows cast at different locations. At noon during the summer solstice, sunlight reached directly into a well at Syene while casting a measurable shadow in Alexandria. From this difference, Eratosthenes calculated the earth’s circumference to within approximately two percent of the modern value. This experiment can still be repeated today.

Additional evidence surrounds us constantly. During lunar eclipses, the earth casts a consistently curved shadow upon the moon. As travelers move north or south, different stars appear and disappear from view. The North Star changes elevation depending upon latitude. People living in South America see different constellations than those living in northern Europe.

Modern aviation, satellite communication, GPS navigation and weather systems, all function consistently with a spherical earth. Photographs from multiple nations and independent space agencies across decades all reveal the same reality: a rounded earth suspended in space.

The flat earth theory requires believing in a gigantic worldwide conspiracy involving governments, scientists, navigators, engineers, pilots, astronomers, telecommunications systems, and countless industries operating across hostile nations and competing political systems. Such a theory lacks rational reasoning.

Gravity itself presents a devastating problem for flat earth cosmology. On a spherical earth, gravity pulls everything toward the common center of mass. This explains why “down” is consistent everywhere on earth.

On a flat disc, however, gravity would behave very differently. Toward the outer regions of the disc, gravity would pull objects diagonally inward toward the center rather than straight downward. Water would flow unnaturally toward the center, and the atmosphere would accumulate unevenly. Yet this is not what we observe. Water behaves consistently around the globe because gravity pulls uniformly toward the earth’s center.

Sir Isaac Newton demonstrated mathematically that large bodies naturally form spheres under gravitational attraction. Modern physics continually confirms this principle.

Ultimately, Scripture’s purpose is not to satisfy human curiosity concerning cosmology. The Bible begins with the declaration: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” Genesis 1:1. And it concludes with the promise: “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth…” Revelation 21:1.

The Bible’s great themes are creation, sin, redemption, judgment, salvation, obedience, prophecy, and eternal life through Jesus Christ. The shape of the earth is never presented as a test of saving faith.

The apostle Paul warned believers against becoming consumed with speculative controversies: “Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith.” 1 Timothy 1:4. The modern flat earth movement often distracts minds away from the central truths of the gospel and toward endless speculation.

When all the evidence is honestly examined, the Bible does not teach a flat earth. The passages commonly used to defend flat earth cosmology rely upon poetic language interpreted literally, symbolic prophecy misunderstood as scientific description, phenomenological language mistaken for technical astronomy, or ordinary idioms pressed beyond their intended meaning.

Meanwhile, several biblical passages harmonize remarkably well with the reality of a suspended, rounded earth long before modern science discovered these truths.

The flat earth theory is not a return to biblical faithfulness. Rather, it results from misunderstanding poetic language, ignoring literary context, distrusting overwhelming evidence, and reading modern conspiratorial ideas back into ancient texts.

Therefore let us read Scripture carefully, reverently, and intelligently, allowing each passage to speak according to its intended purpose and genre. The heavens indeed declare the glory of God, not as a flat disc beneath a solid dome, but as a vast and orderly universe sustained by the hand of the Almighty.

Gospel Angels Broadcasting

How Can I Choose Blessings Over Curses?

This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live. Deuteronomy 30:19

Suppose the pastor of a large church divided up his flock into two groups, and instead of the normal “whatever they do” routine practiced on Sunday morning, he announced, “Half of you will represent the blessings of God, and the other half curses. Now, I’m going to read a list of what you’re to do if you want to be blessed, and you on the left say, ‘Amen.’ Then I’ll read a list of what will bring God’s curses on your life, and you on the right say, ‘Amen.’“

Should that be done, I suspect the pastor might need to start inquiring about serving somewhere else. Yet that is exactly what Moses instructed Joshua to do when Israel crossed the Jordan and entered Canaan.

Every time I am in Israel and pass by Mt. Gerizim and Mt. Ebal, I think of that tremendous assembly of people with six of the tribes of Israel standing on each mountain–which we would consider more of a hill today than actually a mountain. Gerizim represented blessing, and there were assembled Levi, Judah, Simeon, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin. Across the small valley were assembled Reuben, Gad, Asher, Dan, Napthali, and Zebulon.

Then the Levites read the law and the people responded appropriately, saying “Amen” really meaning, “Yes, let it be so. We agree with this.” And what was worthy of the curse of God? Things such as disrespect for parents, moving a neighbor’s boundary marker, leading a blind man in the wrong direction, having sexual relations with animals, and so forth.

What brought blessing? Obeying the Lord and faithfully following his commands and laws. This resulted in a bountiful harvest, overflowing barns, growing flocks and herds, safety from the enemy and long life and many children.

Blessings and curses! In a world of computers, miracle drugs, satellite communication and broken families, do you ever wonder if the blessings and curses which Moses talked about are still in place today?

In what some have called the greatest sermon ever preached, Jesus talked about blessing. He began saying, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:3-6). More than 200 times in the Bible, you find where God bestows blessings of one kind or another on individuals—200 times!

Everyone likes to be blessed–which translates into positive assets and relationships: good job, wonderful wife or husband, healthy, normal kids, enough money to do whatever you want to do. But about that business of curses? “I thought God loved us,” you say, “and only sought to shower down good things on us.”

The reality is that the negative results of sinful behavior often play out the reality that God does bless those who bless Him, and the curses of rejecting Him echo back on our broken, dysfunctional lives.

When Joshua split the group into two great masses of people, he announced, “This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live” (Deuteronomy 30:19).

Choose life! It was their decision and their choice, and each brought consequences. Looking back over your life, you may have made some bad decisions. While you can’t unscramble scrambled eggs, you can drive a stake in the ground, and say, “God, forgive me. Now, turn my life into a blessing.”

    Discover the One True Lighthouse.

In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it. John 1:4-5

The Naval Institute’s magazine carried the story of the captain of a battleship who was concerned about rough seas and fog when, quite suddenly, a bright light appeared on the horizon. The captain immediately had the signalman send the message, “Change course immediately!” But back came the reply, “You must change course!” Irritated that a battleship should have to give way to a lesser vessel, the captain ordered that the message be sent, “I am a battleship!” And back came the reply, “I am the lighthouse!” The captain changed course.

Long ago Jesus said simply, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Many an individual cruising through life as a battleship, expecting others to get out of his way, has encountered the light, Jesus Christ, and seeing that the vessel of their life was headed towards the rock, changed course and direction. Are you one of them? Wise is the person who recognizes the message, “I am the lighthouse.”

Surprising as it may be to you, Paul says that blindness, like a heavy fog, keeps the unregenerated person from seeing clearly who Jesus Christ really is, and that darkness keeps them blindly serving a god who can never satisfy. Here’s how he put it: “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God … . For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:4,6).

The direction coming from the lighthouse always takes precedence over anything else, right? In relationship, then, to Jesus, the issue is quite simple. Was He really the light that He claimed to be? Or was He simply one of several lights, perhaps many, any one of which can keep the vessel of your life off the rocks?

Be very clear, Jesus never claimed to be one of several lights. In a straightforward, simple manner, He said, “I am that light.” “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

The men and women of the first century—people who heard and saw Him—were absolutely convinced. They were convinced, even to their death, that the record stood: “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, [and] that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

If this is so, as Scripture and history affirm, then to ignore what He says about life and death would be as foolish as a ship captain’s refusal to turn when the signal comes back, “I am the lighthouse.”

May I ask you, friend, have you encountered the Light which cannot be dimmed by the darkness of the world, or even the darkness of our hearts? Have you experienced what John wrote about, saying, “In him was life, and that life was the light of men?” (John 1:4).

Lighthouses around the world today are becoming fewer and fewer far between. They’ve been replaced by satellite technology and electronic devices that let ships know where the rocks and the other vessels are; nonetheless, the picture of the lighthouse with its beam piercing the darkness is still a welcomed image that brings comfort and help. But some things never change. The light that Jesus Christ brought into the world is one of them. There is light in a dark world, and that light makes the difference. Don’t settle for anything short of “the true light that gives light to every man … ” (John 1:9). That’s from John chapter 1. Indeed, friend, He is the lighthouse that directs us to heaven’s shore.

  • God's creation = 100 /evolution = 0
I thought I would do something different today. So often atheists say there are no “real” scientists who support young earth creation or a global flood.

    That simply isn’t true.

Here is a partial list of real scientists and their credentials from CMI's website. And yes, this is only a partial list.

We are not claiming numbers equal truth. But sometimes a little pushback is needed so people can see reality for what it is and understand that this claim just doesn’t hold up.

God's creation = 100 /evolution = 0 I thought I would do something different today.
