Another NFL season has begun. I choose to watch highlights on YouTube instead of being glued to the TV for hours. I still don’t like the so-called "dynamic kickoff" that supposedly improves player safety. However, I’m happy my favorite team (the Minnesota Vikings) won their home opener. I’m also glad to see Christian players from both teams continue to pray together at the end of games. “…whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)

A pastor I know posted this. Critics will find fault with ministers no matter what they do. The Apostle Paul wrote in Galatians 1:10 (NLT), “Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.”

Twenty-five years ago today, the Lord led me to share the gospel on the streets of Springfield, Virginia. That morning, I walked into an electronics store intending to just check my email. There I noticed a crowd of people gathered around a big screen TV. That’s where I learned what happened in New York City and at the Pentagon ten miles away. Soon I resumed evangelizing, and was taken aback by the number of individuals who knew of the tragedies, but were oblivious for their need to be ready for eternity. “Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” (James 4:14) #neverforget

THROWBACK THURSDAY - In 2008, I visited the Flight 93 Memorial near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Americans should be thankful for the passengers who fought against the 9/11 hijackers and prevented the jet from possibly crashing into the White House or U. S. Capitol. It’s more important to know the One who made the Ultimate Sacrifice. “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:7-8)

For those of you who commute to work, rush hour traffic can be annoying. Instead of getting aggravated, use that travel time listening to anointed sermons or worship music instead of the news. If your job allows you to use an audio device, you can feed on God’s word while you’re working. Doing that plus applying what I learned on the streets helped accelerate my spiritual growth. “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17)

There’s a meme circulating claiming people will quit going to church if one thing goes wrong but will keep going back to McDonald’s even if their order is messed up 101 times (an exaggeration). The last three mornings on my way to a church conference, I’ve stopped at a McDonald’s where they have repeatedly messed up my order. From now on, I’m going to a different location. The chain is not at fault. It’s incompetent employees at this location. When sharing the gospel, I regularly meet professing Christians who quit going to church because of a bad experience with a minister or congregation member. I encourage them to ask God to lead them to a better fellowship. Hebrews 10:25 says, “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”

A patient asked his universalist doctor for a second opinion. The doctor replied, “Oh, sure. I’ve got plenty of those.”

THROWBACK THURSDAY - Two days ago was the 80th birthday of Barry Gibb, the oldest and last surviving member of The Bee Gees. They were my favorite group back in the day. I got to see them in concert during their 1979 Spirits Having Flown Tour. Barry (pictured on the right) has stated a belief in the Bible, but has dabbled in other spiritual practices. I found out he and his wife Linda attended Bible studies at the home of Ricky Skaggs. I’m praying Barry comes to know the Lord (if he hasn’t already). 2 Peter 3:9 says that the Lord “…is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”

It’s unfortunate that some people get easily offended on social media. I’ve had a few friends block (not just unfriend) me because they disagreed with one of my posts. Sometimes misunderstandings occur. Therefore, it’s crucial to maintain open lines of communication with our fellow Christians. I usually unfriend people who consistently post content I don’t want on my wall. I go as far as blocking them only if they persist in pushing their opinions on me. Romans 16:17 says, “Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.”

THROWBACK THURSDAY - Ten years ago I was staying at a friend’s house in western Iowa. We made frequent trips into Omaha, Nebraska. During one of them, I witnessed to six skateboarders hanging out in a parking lot. Three of the guys held hands with me and experienced holy laughter as they got born again. Afterward, two of them wanted a photo with me. Psalm 16:11 says, “In Your presence is fullness of joy.”

Dolly Parton has died at 80. Like many other performers, the country music icon got her start singing in church. Her grandfather was a Pentecostal preacher. Dolly’s birth was even aided by a missionary. Although the singer professed to be a Christian throughout her career, I disagreed with some of the causes she supported. Nevertheless, I trust Dolly is rejoicing in heaven with her husband Carl Dean who passed away last year. Romans 10:13 says, “For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

Jesus fed 5,000 but only 500 followed him after lunch. He had twelve disciples but only three went further in the garden, and only one stood with him at the cross. The closer you get to the cross, the smaller the crowd gets.

When doing street ministry, you often encounter individuals with strange ideas. Yesterday while witnessing to a group of people in Jacksonville Beach, one woman declared, “I believe in Jesus, but not the Bible.” I pointed out that’s a contradiction since John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Bible is the only book that you can never finish. It is alive! You will see new things each time you study it.
