    Living Worship

    Romans 12:1
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

The word ‘therefore’ points back to everything Paul has just taught about regarding God’s mercies - His compassion, forgiveness, salvation through Christ.  Because of these mercies, Paul earnestly asks Christians to respond in a specific way:

‘Present your bodies’ is an act of dedication or offering.  As an animal was presented as a sacrifice upon the altar in Old Testament times, Paul calls believers to present their entire selves as the offering.  This includes one’s everyday life - their actions, habits, speech, relationships - it is a not just a Sunday morning type of offering.  An animal sacrifice in Old Testament times was killed and consumed upon the altar.  But ‘a living sacrifice’ means the Christian surrenders their life fully to God.  It is ongoing and continual, not a one-time event, meaning every day you choose whether or not you will yield to God’s will or your own will.  This offering must be set apart, ‘holy,’ for God’s purposes and to please Him.  The word holy means ‘morally blameless, pure.’  It does not mean we are sinless, but we become holy when we accept Christ as our Saviour.  It means we are to live as those who belong to God - we are to pursue moral purity - we should not be doing things that the world does.  There should be a distinctiveness about us because we belong to God.  The Greek words for ‘reasonable service’ literally mean ‘rational worship,’ or ‘spiritual worship.’  It means this total dedication is the logical, intelligent response to God’s mercy.  It is the sensible thing to do, given what God has done for us in Christ.  True worship is not limited to songs or rituals, true worship is to present your whole life to God as an act of devotion.

“Paul revolutionizes our understanding of worship when he urges us to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice.  This expands worship beyond singing to include every aspect of life - our work, relationships, choices, and even our mundane daily tasks can become acts of worship when done for God’s glory.  The question shifts from ‘when do we worship?’ To ‘how does everything we do reflect our worship?’”

Paul is not calling us to be martyrs in the sense that we deprive ourselves from pleasure or personal comforts (although some may be called to become a literal martyr for the cause of Christ).  He is talking about surrendering control to God for His use - using our time, energy, strengths and abilities to serve Him and others.  Perhaps God is calling you to give up something that may not be sinful, but it is preventing you from being holy and from being a living sacrifice.  Don’t resist.  We are to be holy because God is holy (1 Peter 1:15-16).  We are to be distinctly God’s, separated from sin and world’s ways.  Lets ask the Holy Spirit to help us choose to surrender every day so that we can reflect God’s character in everything we do and in the choices we make.

  • THE CHURCH
    Early Church Model

    Acts 2:42-47
And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles. And all that believed were together, and had all things common; And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

“The church is God’s chosen bride.  We are to be united in Christ and empowered for His mission in the world.  As Christ’s body on earth, it serves as both a spiritual family and a vessel for God’s work in the world.  The early church provides us with a compelling picture of community - ‘They continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.’  This was not just a group of people who shared similar beliefs; it was a transformed community marked by deep devotion to God and to one another.  Their example challenges our often casual approach to church involvement and calls us to something deeper.”

The early church had a powerful testimony to the lost and unsaved by the way the members loved one another and served the Lord.  Warren Wiersbe writes, “The Christians you meet in the book of Acts were not content to meet once a week for ‘services as usual.’  They met daily, cared daily, won souls daily, searched the Scriptures daily, and increased in number daily.  Their Christian faith was a day-to-day reality, not a once-a-week routine.  Why?  Because the risen Christ was a living reality to them, and His resurrection power was at work in their lives through the Spirit.”

“Lets view our church involvements through fresh eyes.  Whether we are gathering for worship, serving in ministry, or connecting in small groups, we are participating in something far greater than ourselves.  The church, with all its human imperfections, remains God’s chosen vehicle for displaying His wisdom to the world and extending His kingdom on earth.  Our investment in the church isn’t just about personal growth or social connection - its about joining God’s ongoing work of transformation in the world.

“May you experience the deep blessing of genuine fellowship this week, both receiving and extending the love of Christ through His body, the church.”

  • HOLY SPIRIT
    Spirit’s Transforming Power

    Ezekiel 36:26-27
A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh
. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

“Through Ezekiel, God promised to give a new heart and to put a new spirit in us and cause us to walk in His statutes. This internal transformation is vastly different from external rule-following.  The Sprit changes us from the inside out, aligning our desires with God’s will and empowering us to live in ways we could not through mere willpower.”

God promises a radical inner transformation after salvation - a complete spiritual renewal.  The Hebrew word for heart in this verse means ‘inner man, mind, will, understanding.’  A ‘stony heart’ represents hardness, stubbornness, rebellion.  Before we were saved, we were unable to respond to God or love His ways.  A ‘heart of flesh’ is soft, responsive, alive and tender toward God.  It is capable of genuine repentance, faith and obedience.

God promises that once a person is saved, the Holy Spirit will dwell within them.  It was not until Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was given to all Christians.  In Old Testament times, the Spirit came upon people temporarily for specific tasks, but today we have Him permanently.  The result of having a new heart and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is that God’s people are enabled and motivated to obey His laws - not from fear of what might happen if they don’t, but from a transformed nature that desires to please Him.

Lets ask the Holy Spirit to keep our hearts soft and tender toward Him, that they do not turn back to a stony heart [we will not lose our salvation, but we can become rebellious toward God - we are all one bad decision away from sin].  Lets be sensitive to the moving of the Holy Spirit and lets live in obedience to Him.  Salvation and godly living come from God’s gracious, transforming power - it does not come from willpower - it has nothing to do with us and everything to do with God.

  • SALVATION
    Eternal Security

    John 10:28-29
And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

“Jesus’ promise that no man can ‘pluck them out of my hand’ provides unshakeable security for our salvation.  This

isn’t a temporary reprieve but an eternal reality secured by God’s power and faithfulness.  Our salvation does not depend on our ability to hold onto God but on His commitment to hold onto us.”

Jesus personally promised eternal life to all who believe on Him through faith.  Eternal life is without end; it will never cease; it is everlasting.  Those who believe on God will never perish or be destroyed; they will never be spiritually lost or separated from God. (For those who choose not to accept God’s free offer of salvation, they will be given over to eternal misery in hell.)  The word pluck means ‘to seize, to carry off by force.’  There is no force great enough to forcibly take the true believer from Christ’s secure hold.

God the Father is greater than all; He is the supreme ruler over everything - all creation, all enemies, all powers.  ‘No man is able to pluck them out of God’s hand.’  As a believer and child of God, you are not only held by Jesus, but also by the hand of omnipotent God.  John Phillips said, “There is something magnificent about the picture of the Lord wrapping His omnipotent hand around us, and of the Father wrapping His own almighty hand around His.  Thus we are ensphered in Christ in God.”

This promise is given to those who hear, are known by, and who follow Jesus (vs 27).  Those who continue in a relationship with God as their Shepherd have this security.  Our physical bodies will deteriorate and die, that is the consequence of sin, but our soul is that part which will never die.  Those who truly belong to God will be given eternal life; there is no power great enough that can snatch them from His protective hands.  What an amazing promise!

  • Great Read

    John 17:20-23
Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

Attention everyone who has come to belief in Christ Jesus: today's scripture is Jesus praying for you specifically. It is truly unbelievable to think that God the Son is praying with you and I in mind. Jesus asks God the Father to grant us the same relationship that He has with God as His Son. The Holy Spirit is the seal of this prayer - the promise of us being grafted into the love relationship God shares in the Trinity. We are truly with God, and He with us.
