THE MERCIFUL MESSIAH
MEMORY VERSE: “And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner” (Luke 18:13).
TEXT: LUKE 18:10-14
God's mercy is fresh and new every morning. There is nothing that can make man just before God but mercy. Our Saviour, Jesus Christ, is always moved with compassion when He sees the pitiable situations of sinful youths. It is compassion that brought Him into the world to die for our sins. He never rejects anyone who cries for mercy.
Our text talks about two individuals who came to the temple to pray - a Pharisee and a Publican. “The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself…” His prayer didn’t ascend to God because it was full of a holier-than-thou and self-righteous attitude. This led to his condemnation. On the other hand, the Publican did not seek to justify himself but simply pleaded for mercy, acknowledging his sins. For this reason, He went home justified. The Saviour is still willing to show mercy to the repentant today. “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy” (Proverbs 28:13). Have you received mercy from the messiah?
PRAYER: Oh God, be merciful unto me and save me by Your grace.
QUOTE: He went home justified.
