“God’s Promise in the Journey”
Introduction
Genesis 46 marks a beautiful moment of reunion and fulfillment. After years of grief, Jacob finally sets out to see his son Joseph, whom he thought was dead. As he prepares to leave Canaan for Egypt, God meets him with reassurance and blessing.
This chapter shows that even when life takes us to unfamiliar places, God’s presence and promises never leave us. Jacob’s journey to Egypt fulfills God’s plan — not just for him, but for the future of Israel as a nation.

Jacob stops in Beersheba to offer sacrifices before leaving the promised land. That night, God appears in a vision and says, “Do not fear to go down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation there. I will go down with you, and I will surely bring you up again.”
Lesson: When God calls you into change, He also promises His presence. Faith replaces fear when we
remember who travels with us.
Verses 5–7 – The Journey to Egypt
Jacob and his entire family — sons, grandsons, daughters, and all their possessions — set out for Egypt in the wagons Pharaoh provided.
Lesson: God’s provision always accompanies His direction. When He says “Go,” He provides the means to get there.
Verses 8–25 – The Family Record
This section lists the names of Jacob’s descendants who went to Egypt — seventy in all, representing the foundation of the nation of Israel.
Lesson: Every name matters to God. He remembers every person and family line that plays a role in His
promise.
Verses 26–27 – Counting the Family
The total number of Jacob’s household entering Egypt is recorded as seventy, signifying completeness and divine order.

Verses 28–30 – Jacob and Joseph Reunited
Jacob sends Judah ahead to prepare the way to Goshen. When Joseph arrives, he embraces his father and weeps for a long time. Jacob says, “Now let me die, since I have seen your face and know you are still alive.”
Lesson: God restores in abundance what life seemed to take away. His timing brings perfect healing.
Verses 31–34 – Settling in Goshen
Joseph instructs his brothers to tell Pharaoh that they are shepherds so they can live in Goshen — a fertile area apart from Egyptian society.
Lesson: God sets His people apart for His purpose. He positions us where we can grow, flourish, and remain faithful.

1. Seek God Before You Move: Like Jacob, pause to worship and listen before taking big steps.
2. Trust God’s Presence in Transition: When life changes, His promise remains the same — “I will go with
you.”

4. Value the Generations: Your obedience today affects your children and grandchildren tomorrow.
5. Rest in His Restoration: No matter how long you’ve waited, God can still restore what was lost.
