“God’s Favor in a Foreign Land”

    Introduction

Genesis 47 shows how God’s promise to Abraham continues even in a foreign land. Jacob and his family settle in Egypt under Joseph’s protection, and through Joseph’s wisdom, Egypt survives the famine.

This chapter reveals God’s ability to bless His people anywhere — not because of their location, but because of His presence. It also reminds us that while we live in this world, we are only passing through; our true home is with God.

    Context

    ● Author: Moses, inspired by the Holy Spirit

    ● Audience: The Israelites, learning how their nation began and how God remained faithful in every
    generation

    ● Setting: Egypt, during the ongoing famine

    ● Purpose: To show how God provides for His people and fulfills His promises, even in exile or hardship

    Verse-by-Verse Overview

Verses 1–6 – Jacob’s Family Presented to Pharaoh

Joseph presents five of his brothers to Pharaoh, who asks about their occupation. They explain they are
shepherds and request to live in Goshen. Pharaoh grants permission and even offers to employ capable men among them.

Lesson: God’s favor opens doors even in unfamiliar places. When you walk in His purpose, He makes room for you.

Verses 7–10 – Jacob Blesses Pharaoh

Jacob is brought before Pharaoh and blesses him twice — once upon entering and again when leaving.

Lesson: God’s people carry His blessing wherever they go. Even in a pagan kingdom, Jacob represents the presence of the true God.

    Verses 11–12 – God’s Provision Through Joseph

Joseph settles his family in Goshen, gives them property, and provides food for all their households.

Lesson: God provides through the faithfulness of His servants. Joseph’s obedience ensures survival for many.

Verses 13–19 – The Famine Deepens

The famine becomes severe, and people trade money, livestock, and eventually land in exchange for food.

Lesson: Earthly resources eventually fail, but God’s provision through His chosen people never runs out.

    Verses 20–26 – Joseph’s Stewardship

Joseph purchases all the land for Pharaoh but establishes a system allowing people to farm and give one-fifth of their harvest to Pharaoh.

Lesson: Godly wisdom brings structure, stability, and blessing — even in crisis. Wise management honors God and helps others.

    Verses 27–28 – Israel’s Prosperity in Egypt

While Egypt struggles, Israel prospers and multiplies greatly in Goshen. Jacob lives there for 17 years.

Lesson: God’s people can thrive anywhere when they walk in His favor. Blessing is not about location but
    about relationship.

    Verses 29–31 – Jacob’s Final Request

As Jacob nears death, he makes Joseph promise to bury him in Canaan, not Egypt. Joseph swears to it, and
    Jacob bows in worship.
Lesson: Faith looks forward to God’s promises, not backward to earthly comfort. Jacob’s eyes remained on the land God promised.

    Application for Today

    1. Walk in God’s Favor: When you live righteously, His favor follows you into every season and setting.

    2. Be a Blessing Wherever You Are: Like Jacob, speak life and blessing over those around you.

    3. Trust God’s Provision: Even when resources seem limited, His supply never runs dry.

    4. Lead with Wisdom: Joseph’s stewardship shows that faithful management honors God.

    5. Keep Your Eyes on Eternity: Like Jacob, remember that this world is not your final home.

    Summary

Genesis 47 paints a picture of divine provision and faith in the midst of famine. God places His people in a position of favor even in a foreign land. Joseph’s wisdom sustains an entire nation, and Jacob’s faith continues to point toward the ultimate promise of God’s covenant.

The lesson is clear: God’s people can flourish anywhere when they walk in faith, integrity, and obedience. Our circumstances may change, but His faithfulness never does.

    Reflection Questions

    1. How can you walk in God’s favor even in difficult or unfamiliar environments?

    2. What does Joseph’s example teach you about wise stewardship and leadership?

    3. How can you keep your focus on God’s eternal promises rather than temporary comfort?
