When Fear Tells You to Lie

Scripture

> “Now Abraham said of Sarah his wife, ‘She is my sister.’ And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.”
— Genesis 20:2 (NKJV)

“Faith Doesn’t Lie”

It’s shocking—Abraham did it again. Just like in Egypt (Genesis 12), he told people Sarah was his sister. It was a half-truth (Sarah was his half-sister), but still a whole lie. And it put others at risk.

Why would a man of faith—the father of faith—do this?

The answer is simple and sobering: fear.

Abraham feared for his life. Instead of trusting God's protection, he took matters into his own hands. He used deception to avoid danger and ended up compromising both his testimony and his wife’s safety.

This verse is a reminder that even people of faith can stumble when fear creeps in. But here's the good news: God’s mercy is greater than our failures. He intervened to protect Sarah and warned Abimelech before anything happened.

Still, the lesson is clear:

> Fear will tempt you to compromise, but faith calls you to trust.

Reflection Questions

1. Are there areas where I’ve let fear lead instead of faith?

2. Have I used half-truths or compromises to protect myself?

3. How can I grow in trusting God more completely in uncertain situations?

Prayer

Father God, thank You for being merciful even when I fail. Forgive me for the times I’ve let fear drive my choices. Help me to walk in honesty and trust—not in compromise or control. Let my faith be stronger than my fear. I want to honor You with both my words and my decisions. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
