Why Christians should avoid psychics (except to evangelize to them) - by Doreen Virtue
People have argued with me that it’s okay to go to psychics because God’s commandments against psychics and mediums were just in the Old Testament.
Yet, Scripture is clear in both the Old and the New Testaments that such practices are forbidden for all time because they lead to demonic deception.
In Deuteronomy 18:10-12, God explicitly warned not to practice divination, fortune-telling, sorcery, or consulting the dead, declaring that such things and the people who practice them are detestable to Him. These were divine commandments rooted in His holy character, and God doesn’t change.
The New Testament confirms that these practices are still forbidden. In Acts 16 Paul encountered a slave girl who had a “spirit of divination” and earned her masters money by fortune-telling. Paul cast the demon out of her, showing that her psychic ability wasn’t some harmless gift but a demonic power.
In Acts 19, new believers in Ephesus burned their occultic books in repentance, because following Christ meant renouncing all sorcery and magical practices.
Galatians 5 lists sorcery as one of the works of the flesh that leads to judgment, and Revelation 21:8 makes it clear that sorcerers will have their portion in the lake of fire for eternal torment.
Scripture doesn’t leave us room to reinterpret this. Consulting psychics, mediums, or any form of occult practice isn’t entertainment, therapy, or harmless curiosity. It’s rebellion against God. It’s the opposite of trusting in the Lord. It’s also spiritual adultery, because it’s mingling with demons.
We are saved by God‘s grace through our faith in Jesus Christ, and we aren’t saved by our good works. However, once we are saved, we want to please God, which includes staying far away from psychics and mediums.
The only safe place to turn for wisdom and guidance is the Word of God and prayer through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is the way, the truth, and the life.
Jesus died for our sins, including the sins of divination, sorcery, and mediumship.
