God’s Original Design for Marriage
By Dr. David Olaoluwa
Marriage did not begin with man. It began with God. The very first home in the Bible was created by Him in the Garden of Eden. Genesis 2:18 says, “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”
This shows us that marriage is God’s idea, not man’s invention. Adam did not ask for a wife. It was God who looked at him and said, “It is not good for this man to be alone.” God saw the need before Adam felt it. That means God knows what is best for every home, and He must be the foundation of every marriage.
The Purpose of Marriage
Marriage was designed for companionship. Adam had the animals, but none of them could give him true fellowship. Only Eve, made from his rib, was fit to stand beside him as a partner.
Genesis 2:24 says, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
This shows that marriage is about oneness. It is not two people competing but two becoming one in purpose, vision, and love.
God’s Presence in Marriage
The Garden of Eden was not just a home—it was a place where God’s presence dwelt. That is the true secret of a sweet marriage. A home without God may look fine outside, but it will lack true peace inside. Only His presence brings lasting joy, unity, and strength.
Psalm 127:1 says, “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.” Without God as the builder, marriage becomes a struggle. But with Him, marriage becomes a blessing.
Living Out God’s Design Today
To enjoy marriage as God designed it, both husband and wife must:
Recognize God as the author of marriage.
Put Him at the center of their home.
Seek His wisdom daily through prayer and His Word.
When God’s design is followed, marriage becomes a gift, not a burden. It becomes a partnership filled with love, purpose, and peace.
