Types of Prayer
Prayer has different types and levels. For us beginners, prayer begins with repentance, ascends with thanksgiving, and soars through the realms of the Holy Spirit towards knowing the unknowable and perceiving the imperceivable, which is the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Through repentance, we learn supplication; because we pray, asking God for what we do not possess. Through prayer, we realize the poverty of our human nature and our need for grace. Whoever prays realizes through their petition that they do not possess; because the desire to possess is the seed of the first sin, which drank from the cup of false grandeur and grew by the seduction of the ancient serpent.
The Lord came and taught us supplication and petition; so that we may perceive from supplication God's goodness and the generosity of His nature, and through persistence in petition, we realize the purpose of our lives.
Importunity in prayer is not directed towards God, but towards the human heart itself; because through insistence and importunity, we learn how to delve into the secrets of the heart and become aware of the hidden aspects of intention and motives. How many times do we ask for what is inappropriate and what is not permissible.
Importunity is the steadfastness of the heart and its desire, which becomes clearer with the passage of time.
Let us persist in prayer until we learn - from our fellowship with Christ and in Christ - the truth of the heart's intentions and the hidden aspects of the spirit within us (i.e., the human spirit), whose essence, mysteries, and purposes are hidden from us. The spirit within us is what has been formed in us from thoughts, habits, practices, and feelings, all gathered in the heart, becoming like the driving force for everything within us and for everything we do in life.
