Purity of Intention
If the Lord, as a human, fixed His mind on remaining obedient to the love of the Father and in the communion of one life, then when the evil one tempted Him in the wilderness and presented Him with the evils of the first Adam, the Lord refused all these evils because His intention was pure.
As for us, prayer is one of the means that purifies intention; because when we pray, the words—by the power of the Holy Spirit—purify thought and will, open the eyes of the heart, and make our inner intention pure according to the desires and goals we seek and long for.
Thus, prayer works within us through persistence and steadfastness, as petition opens the eyes of our hearts to see Jesus Christ and Him crucified (Galatians 3:1), and we seek the cross which purifies our inner intention.
Whoever sacrifices his will prays with purity, but whoever places his will above everything, even above the sacred commandment, needs a long time—through the Holy Spirit and constant prayer—to seek God's will and become pure.
