"With Christ" - The Company of Sonship Inheritance
In the garden of Gethsemane, the Lord cried out, "Abba, Father," giving us these words to cry out with Him and by the power of the Holy Spirit. The Apostle says, "For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear (the spirit of Jewish religion and law), but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, 'Abba, Father.'" (Romans 8:15). The Apostle reiterates this truth in another beautiful passage; because he establishes the first rule of salvation, which is the incarnation of the Son. "But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, 'Abba, Father!'" (Galatians 4:4-6).
Through the incarnation of the Son, we received this personal quality, this hypostatic characteristic specific to the second person, meaning the quality of sonship. This gift alone is what makes the Apostle say explicitly: "Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ" (Galatians 4:7). The Apostle Paul confirms the same foundational rule of faith in the eighth chapter of Romans. "The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ" (Romans 8:16-17).
